never knew tom holland likes to fish

I always see anglers reel in a fish but for some reason when they get their fish to the bank or boat they raise their pole so the fish is 10' from the pole. Now it is really awkward for them to hold the rod up while retrieving the fish. Why don't they reel the fish in to 5' of the pole instead?
