St Helena is like this too, arid near the coast and greener in the center. It is slightly larger and higher than Ascension, there is some variation in the temperatures given it is a further 10 degrees further south than Ascension but it isn't much. Not as warm for sure.

Takes me back. We stayed in Two Boats while fixing up the fuel pumping system at the airport. The 'convenience store' is also the filling station, and was open one lunchtime a week as I recall. Watched a movie at the US base outdoor cinema and walked up Green Mountain to the Dew Pond through waving giant bamboo.

The geology of this island looks far more exotic than st helena.. more like an exotic island destination.. more flat yet ok bit barren but still looks much better that the way more populated st helena... why they didnt make this the center of the region and chose st helena which is surely beautiful but too hilly and without any beaches i ll never get!! And infrastructure is great also!!

Infrastructure is not that great on Ascension and it's very mountainous and a scientific research and listening base. I don't think they would want lots of tourists pouring over it.
@ArrowBast
2 жыл бұрын
I think St Helena has much more reliable water supply due to its terrain, latitude and catchment and much closer to Cape Town when South Africa was still under British Empire. Ascension was almost barren till they realized a forest can be created to capture moisture from trade winds , since Ascension is much closer to the equator. St Helena is much more rugged than Ascension and that topography is better suited to capture moisture from the atmosphere.

Looks like a nice place to retire.
@williamfulgham2010
5 жыл бұрын
Adolfo, Mark Shelly is much more on top-of the subject than I am, since I am still just trying to get to Saint Helena. But the way I understand it, although Ascension can be traveled to under certain circumstances, you cannot just travel there and retire because there are no permanent residents allowed on the small island. In other words if you're there for very long, you must have a legal working reason to be there, which means that children are allowed to be with their parents and attend schools while their parents are employed in some way or another for either entities of the US, or the UK, if they wish to remain after finishing school, they must have a job to remain on the island. Is that more or less correct Mark?

I am a retired US Army Officer and I am doing some KZread touring and research concerning places - especially remote islands - that are somewhat off the 'beaten path' - such as Ascension, St. Helena, Tristan Da Cunha and Pitcairn. My now deceased Dad was stationed there many years ago when he worked for Pan American Airways and they had a US government contract to do work at some facilities there. I never asked him what he did and he never really said much about the place except that the fishing was excellent. It looks really boring with not much to do except to work, hang out at the military supported clubs and maybe on the beach. I hope that I am wrong. Is there much of a social life there? Are there interesting things to do or be a part of? Or are most people straining at the bit to get off the island? Can you catch a military flight from the US to Ascension? Any commentary or information would be most welcome and appreciated.

JockBaloney Hi I am from st helena Island and I went to school on Ascension Island. I now live in nyc .there is a us Military flight from the Island once a week, stopping in Antigua to refule before arriving in Patrick air force base in cape Canaveral fl.and the address to the us base on Ascension Island is a post number box ,Patrick Air force base. but I forgot the box number. The islands of st Helena and Ascension are quite peaceful Islands. if you are thinking about visiting ,I would recommend going via England or capetown on to st Helena and then fly over to Ascension Island. there is a weekly flight from St Helena..best o f luck .

Gavin Lamborghini How amazing is that! I really would like to visit St. Helena some day - first and foremost. I have been to Antigua several times as my Dad was stationed there with my Mom many years ago. I have also visited Cape Town SA with my girlfriend who is from there but she is now a US citizen. So Cape Town via WindHoek in Namibia sounds like the best way for me to go or maybe catch a USAF MAC flight from Patrick Air Force Base in Florida. That sounds like a possibility as well as I live in the US state of Georgia just to the north of Florida. I am fascinated by the history of St. Helena and the scenery and sense of isolation seem almost 'other worldly'. I can imagine that you have some fond memories growing up there as a child. I was born in Trinidad and Tobago a former British colony but my parents read the writing on the wall that there was no future for us there so we all picked up and moved to the USA to Pennsylvania where my Dad was from. Thank you for responding Gavin and for the flight information as well. I know that the flights are very costly but I do hope to travel to St. Helena some day. I can only begin to imagine what a drastic change NYC must be for you compared to Ascension Island and St. Helena. But these places are all that contribute towards making life interesting. All the best my friend. And thank you so much for taking the time and being kind enough to respond to my query. You are a good man indeed! Cheers and stay safe in NYC!

What an absolutely surreal place. English accents and signs, american buildings and tropical landscapes.

@williamfulgham2010
