I served in HMS Puma based at Simonstown, Cape Town. Visited St Helena, Ascension Island and Tristan de Cunha in 1962. No cars on St Helena then.

I find it amazing how fast they drive on the winding roads

Island-wide speed limit is 30mph (48kph) and in many places it's 20mph (32kph), but I'm told that the maximum speed ever (illegally) achieved on the island was 120mph (200kph) - on one of the winding roads!

That MK2 escort at the start, superb! I used to own one! Ive always wanted to visit Saint Helena, soak in the islander life and escape the modern world.

Oh, the memories! Going up Ladder Hill Road, passing the Fort, then up past Half Tree Hollow, and further, a lovely drive. I did the 5-day voyage from Cape Town to St Helena, on the ship RMS St Helena, spent 8 days on the island, b/b with a local resident, then 5 days back home, what a holiday! I do hope that the airport doesn't spoil the lovely Saints!

I know it is a very old comment but now there are flights to St. Helena. There are not very many but they do fly multiple times a week.

This in some respects caught an end of an era for the island, as the airport round about this time was opening. I was in St Helena about 4 years before this video was taken and everything up the winding road up Jamestown to Half Tree Hollow is exactly as I remember it.

Beautiful footage. I have to visit this little island and see it for myself one day.

I have a 93 XR3 here in Brazil. Since new in my family! Great car! I don't sell for nothing in this world.

The Saints on the island say you would - just get used to it. I keep thinking they should start an off road race and publicize it to the world once the new undersea high speed fiber internet link is completed, which is expected sometime in 2022. The problem is, someone might actually go 'off road', so to speak.

Yes, slow though. Last I looked was 20 mb/s shared by the entire island. Apparently an uplink to sattelites.

You’d like Tobago. There’s ONE main road on the island and that goes around it. For the same reason, it’s impossible to lose your way driving. If you’re not sure, continue straight until you arrive where you started.
