    It's great being able to see where my ancestors lived 100 years ago and I suspect very little has changed since then. Thank you

    Surprising amount of cars and traffic for a small island. I think I saw one Japanese Kei car, with all the narrow streets I thought they'd be more popular.

    It would be interesting to see the same drive, but say from Two Gun Saddle to Jamestown, after the upgrade to Side Path. Hard to believe the number of cars there compared with my time - then there were under 400!

    The amount of road traffic was quite surprising considering that the whole island's population is only about 4,500 souls.

    I would have to say there are a lot of places like this just not on a island. Also living on a island this far from the mainland would be quite expensive for everything you need.

    I bet drug and crime rate is low or almost zero. Politics would be easy to handle. Does anybody know any of this information. I would love to know more about this place. Seems like an amazing place to live.

    Roger, Yes the Crime Rate is very low. Politics not so easy- There is a Public Consultation ongoing at present into types of Governance the Island wants. More Info on the Island here: sainthelenaisland.info/

    norgi, Wouldn't it be great to see a formula 1 Grand Prix run on the island. Basil Read, the Contractor that built the airport and the new water port at Ruperts cove, completed a fast access Haul Road while they were building the airport several years ago, and that would add a fast lane to several miles around the route. Just a crazy idea that I have been thinking about.

  • @williamfulgham2010

    Looking at the route that Paul Blake has shown us, formula 1 would probably be a little too fast and risky on the island, but maybe something like what you would see with an over the road race in Mexico or somewhere. I'm thinking that there would be some kind of vehicle that would be suitable for that kind of circuit. Also, they will be getting high speed Internet with a buried under sea fiber link, sometime in the next year or so, and that would allow for International coverage and promotion for the island and a race that could be run there.

    Does anybody know where they get there power from, where is it generated. Do they have normal gas stations, schools, bars, and shopping areas. I know there is so much they don't or can't have. I just have so many questions only a resident would know. I thank this place is amazing and wanna learn more. Do they have police? Just normal questions. Do they have mechanic shops? Stuff like that.

    Roger. Yes, they have everything you list. Power is generated by Diesel generators and renewable sources from Solar & Wind Farms. You can find out more in-depth info on the Island by having a root around at this website: sainthelenaisland.info/

    Roger, Great travel videos from Paul Blake, as always. You can also do a search for the South Atlantic Media Services or SAMS, and you will see videos that were produced on Saint Helena for several years that did local stories about events and activities going on covering all the districts on the island. You can get videos and a blog from my friends Darin and Sharon Henry by doing a search for, - What the Saints Did Next. They also produce a magazine called Breeze, which is very high quality because they are professional writers and photographers using the latest digital camera equipment, and they are natives to the island. I have been addicted to Saint Helena ever since I accidentally found the island while doing some Internet searches several years ago and it is very unique in the world. Although Covid19 has restricted travel to just about everywhere, the SHG opened an airport funded by DFID, and the UK a few years ago, and we hope to all be able to fly there as soon as this pandemic is over.

    @@PaulBlake80 Are all vehicles on the island diesel powered? Where do they fill up, somewhere in Rupert's? I've never seen a petrol station in videos or on Google Maps.

    @@Poplicola08 No they have Petrol as well - mainly the smaller cars - I belive there maybe one or two electric vehicles now as well. There are 3 fuel stations - Jamestown (Narrabacks), Half Tree Hollow (Cow Path) & Longwood (Supermarket / Colt Sheds).

    Seeing so many cars I wondered how expensive is petrol/gasoline and diesel? What is the driving test like? Is car ownership expensive? Is car insurance expensive? And how hard are driving laws enforced?

  • @PaulBlake80

    @PaulBlake80

    3 жыл бұрын

    Not Sure what the current Petrol/Diesel prices are but much more than the UK and lag behind by 3 months because of the delivery cycle but around 20p a litre more expensive. The Test is very similar to the UK Test for the practical. Drink / Driving is taken very seriously but otherwise you have to be doing something really stupid to get stopped. Vehicle ownership is expensive and sometimes it can be off the road for 3-6 months if a required spare part is not on island.
