The City of Jamestown St Helena - to Live, Work & Explore
Jamestown is the capital of St Helena Island, a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic Ocean.
The island is tiny and very remote, it’s most notable claim to fame is that French Emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled here in 1815, where he died 6 years later.
Until recently St Helena was only accessible by ship, however, St Helena Airport began scheduled flights in 2017 and now weekly flights to Johannesburg, South Africa, keep the island connected with the outside world.
For anyone considering living or taking up a job opportunity on St Helena, this short film gives some insight to what you can expect to find in the island's capital, Jamestown.
Sampling the prestigious St Helena coffee, night swimming at the Jamestown pool, noisy street parades to celebrate the national day and spotting the colourful fish in the Castle Gardens fountain, are some of the activities to experience.
This video about Jamestown also includes shopping for groceries along Main Street, catching a taxi, climbing Jacob's Ladder and target shooting at the Jamestown Rifle Club, plus lots more!
We also include an overview of Jamestown’s history and how it came to be a city.

Hi Kenneth, good to hear of your positive experience on St Helena back then 👍 Passing ocean traffic is a lot less nowadays, however, we still have vessels calling in from time to time to drop off crew members in need of medical attention. Visited in 2013 on the RMS St Helena before the airport. Was like stepping back into a Britain from the 18th century. Lots of military gun barrels along the promenade and cliffs. Union Jack flags fly pledging continued loyalty to the crown. The island is British but nothing like the UK. The island is ultra remote with a unique stress free lifestyle with pleasantries. Will definitely return by plane at some point in the future to see any changes the airport has brought.

I was there in 1994. It had no airstrip then so was very isolated and in a bit of a time warp - no tv, no radio, no phones. The mail ship every two weeks and yachties was the only contact with the outside world.

Jamestown is the capital and largest town of the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, located on the island of Saint Helena in the South Atlantic Ocean. It was named after James, Duke of York, the future King James II of England. The town was founded in 1659 by the British East India Company as a supply station for their ships travelling to and from Asia. It served as an important port for ships travelling to the Cape of Good Hope and India. However, the town was also used as a place of banishment for prisoners, political exiles and slaves. In the 19th century, Jamestown played an important role in the suppression of the African slave trade. The British Royal Navy stationed a squadron of ships in the town to intercept slave ships that were passing through the South Atlantic. Today, Jamestown is a charming, historic town with brightly-coloured houses, narrow streets and many interesting buildings and landmarks. It is home to a population of around 700 people and is the hub of the island's tourist industry. Visitors can explore the town's museums, churches, forts and other historic sites, as well as enjoy its many restaurants, bars and shops.

Very interesting to see lots of products from South Africa, there is a yatch race that sails from Cape Town to St. Helena that I missed out on a few years ago. And really would like to visit via ship

Hi Brian, thanks for stopping by the channel. Yes, a significant portion of imports come from South Africa. The Cape to St Helena Yacht Race (formerly The Governor's Cup Yacht Race) takes place every two years, normally starting in late December from Cape Town. You may be interested in reading our blog post about the race winners in 2014/15: whatthesaintsdidnext.com/st-helena-governors-cup-yacht-race-winners-black-cat/ To visit by ship nowadays you would probably need to join one of the cruise ships that call by the island.
Hey ! The sound board used by the radio statio is the same model as one that I have. It is pretty good.

Hi Ian, sounds like a good reason to plan a visit one day 😊 it's much easier now too, since 2017, that we have air access. Weekly flights from Johannesburg, with an extra flight added during the peak season months, Nov - March. If you do decide to start making a plan, you will find useful information about travelling to the island, here: travelsthelena.com/useful-information/ Thanks for stopping and viewing the video, all the best from St Helena 👍

Hi Colin, equally, we would love to visit the Falklands one day. Lots of Saints down there living & working these days and they all seem to be loving it. We also have Portugal on our bucket list. Only recently read 'The Other Exile' The Story of Fernao Lopes, St Helena and a Paradise Lost and it's really made us want to visit Portugal and explore the museums and maritime history especially. Hope to see you on the island one day 😊 All the best 🌅👍

Hey Lorrenzo, thanks for the comment. St Helenians are predominantly descendants of English settlers, slaves from West Africa, Madagascar, Bengal and Asia, and Chinese indentured workers - so a right melting pot 😊We do notice ourselves when we've visited Cape Town over the years how similar our peoples look.
Despite the distance from Brazil I'd love visit this incredible place.😊❤

I spent 8 months on Ascension Island in the military and always wanted to visit St Helena. Really friendly people the Saints 👍🇬🇧 Ah the fresh milk thing was the same on Asi as well as new supplies getting bought immediately. But a really unique and beautiful place and lucky detachment to get. 🌴🐢🐠🍹

We also know Ascension well 😊 albeit a couple decades ago now 😮 Yes, both islands share many of the same logistics challenges. Only wish we could spend a few weeks there again now, we never really appreciated the photography and videography opportunities at the time, nor how spectacular the landscape there is. Thanks for stopping by and your comment 👍❤
In the UK, you can buy St. Helena coffee from Cardew's in Oxford's covered market, and they do mail order. It isn't cheap but it is very good.

It's quite interesting how often we have visitors with similar stories, who come to connect and learn a little more about their family history.
I'm going there for a visit to buy up as much of the town as possible to open up fast food restaurants!
