Woman Living Off-Grid on a Remote Island - 2 Years in a Small Cabin
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Amanda lives alone in an off-grid cabin on a remote island in British Columbia. She previously lived on a sailboat in Vancouver for 8 years and then headed North with her boat. She eventually wanted to move onto land because her dog Buttercup was getting older and after searching online, she connected with the owners of an island who were looking for a caretaker to keep an eye on things.
So for the past two years, Amanda has lived solo on the island (aside from a couple of months in the summer when the owners and cabin guests are visiting) and she has taken care of everything from splitting and stacking firewood, maintaining the lawn, running the generators, and a lot more! It's a big job and she does most of her caretaker tasks in the morning and in the afternoons she works remotely as a web designer. She also has a great KZread channel that she uses to document her liveaboard and off-grid lifestyles.

@computerjantje oh heavens no, I love my life in the subtropics surrounded by family, friends, beaches and rainforest. If there's one thing I've learnt as I've got older it's that just because something is beautiful/exciting etc doesn't mean I need to own it or do it. I can admire and appreciate and then move on.
I lived off the grid on my 20 acres with a small creek down the middle in the high mountains of BC Canada. for 20 years. with my wife and ended up with 4 children..The closest neighbour was about 5 miles away, down the valley..It was a wonderful way to live and raise a family..The kids are all in their late 20s and 30s now and Love the outdoors ..I put all their names on the deed and now I live Down near Vancouver BC..I'm 70 years old now and very content with the life I lived...God bless this spirited woman for having the will to live her life the way she loves... Having lived off grid for many years, I would tend to disagree. The data would show that a lack of regular health care, including dentistry will shorten ones life expectancy. Oftentimes a minor health issue will be 'toughed out' rather than addressed, which can lead to an exacerbated decline in overall health. This lifestyle appears (to the uninitiated) to be filled with endless days of serenity and solitude...whereas in reality, it's labour intensive, lonely, and extremely dangerous...and just staying warm is a full time occupatipn. I'd give most humans a month before they're desperate for takeout and a Starbucks😂

Some people just enjoy solitude. My wife died a year ago. My life of teaching in one-teacher schools and in the sticks were hard on her but not me. I grew up on an island. Lately friends thing I should be looking for a companion, but I'm happy the way I am and I don't think many women would like to live my back-to-the land lifestyle. I live 5 driving hours from the nearest interstate and 2 driving hours to the nearest Costco. But having traveled many times up the coast and seen so many of the BC coastal islands and the waterfalls and the animals and the orcas, I wished I could have spent time on the BC Coast. But I lived on the American San Juans which are an extension of the Canadian San Juans. We high school kids couldn't wait to get off the "rock", but now I am so glad I had that life and understand so well Amanda's life. Thanks, Amanda.
I just looked thru a few comments. Some of the first ones I will respond to. Like one person said you’re not off grid if you use a cell phone, another said you’re not off grid if you’re on KZread. I guess more people should do some research on what off grid is. You live in the middle of nowhere and you supply your own power like wind or solar. You have no public utilities like water, gas, sewer or electric. There are many people that have KZread channels that live off grid. Like when I camped in the Desert for 12 months in the middle of nowhere. Sure I had my cell phone I used wind and solar for power. I truly love that lifestyle. You are living my dream Amanda.
@AmandaOffGrid

Yaaaaas! Just because you've got internet and cell service (which, by the way, I don't have), it doesn't disqualify you from living off-grid. Some purists might argue that true off-grid living means cutting ties with all things digital, but let's be real here: in today's world, staying connected is more of a necessity than a luxury. When you're out in the middle of nowhere and you need help, having a lifeline to the outside world can save your life.
I spent 9 months alone in the Montana wilderness, it was the best time of my life.
Not having to depend on anything or anybody and still be happy shows how strong and golden her spirit is. The world needs more people with her mentality….
Most people Don't live their lives on their own terms. Amanda is NOT that person. She has the strength and will to live how and where she wants and is crushing it. Its amazing to witness true freedom.👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Hi, we lived off grid in the NZ bush. We had to start from scratch, build everything, home cabin, composting loos, solar and microhydro, regenerative gardens and fruit trees. After 20 years we were too old and tired. Do this while you are young with good eyesight and no health issues. Stuck in town now, doctor, super markets, power with just a switch, still preferred being in the bush.

I once asked a therapist if it was strange that I'm always alone but never lonely. Beautifully said. I've never been one to go against my nature. It's disheartening to witness so many people steer away from their authentic selves, chasing after societal expectations and norms. They often find themselves navigating through lives that feel hollow and unfulfilled. It would be so liberating if society embraced our human differences with open arms, rather than scrutinizing and condemning them. We'd all be much happier for it.
