Incredibly helpful, thank you so much for making this video!
As a coloured living in cape town St. Helena sure looks like home 😊
Are you allowed to have pets on the island?
Hi Sophia, yes, many people have pets. The government ANRD section has a Veterinary department and in their words: "We have cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, donkeys as well as dogs, cats, fish, rabbits and guinea pigs and of course the giant tortoises at Plantation to look after." You will find information about bringing pets to the island at the top of this page, as well as useful links: sthelenapublicservicejobs.sh/useful-information/ We did a story on our blog in early 2017 about 'Dusty's dozen.' @@whatthesaintsdidnext that’s awesome! Thank you for sharing. I’ve always been fascinated by remote locations as I am from Australia. Such a gorgeous world out there and hope to visit St Helena some day to experience it myself

Hi guys just have a couple of questions I would like to know: 1.Do you guys celebrate St Patrick’s Day just Like The Uk and Ireland. 2.What Sort of TV Channels do you guys have 3.Do you guys think you could have uk tv channels in the future like ITV and Virgin Media One.
Hi RTV, thanks for the interest in St Helena. In answer to your questions: 1. No, not really, but if there are Irish people on island they may sometimes organise small, private celebration events. 2. Sure South Atlantic provide a TV service, rebroadcasting channels from MNET in South Africa. You can see the packages here: www.sure.co.sh/television/tv-channels/ 3. So we have the channels already as listed above. Also, since internet improved in October 2023, many people are now able to stream certain channels online. Hope that helps. Thanks for stopping by our channel. All the best from St Helena 👍😊
Why do they need cars there
Hi Lo-Fi Evenings, thanks for stopping by our channel 👍 Although St Helena is very small, the terrain is completely mountainous making walking or cycling quite difficult as a means of just getting around for everyday tasks, ie shopping, going to work etc. You may be interested in this video we made about driving on St Helena: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZqF3rsmJiczAYrA.html

miss opportunity ... should have also shown the other towns connecting to this town or better yet show the whole island already as it is not that big at all
Thanks for checking out the video and your feedback 👍 Yes, the island is small, however, the video was designed to specifically give an insight into life in Jamestown only. But we take your point, and there is plenty of scope to do more films covering other aspects of island life, hopefully we can do some of this in future. 😊
Currently in the application phase. 👍
Good luck Aiden, it's an exciting career path for sure 👍😊
I really want to spend time living here someday. I love remote places.
And you did so well selling out the place to me! I've been constantly watching documentaries about the island for 3 years now! I would just like to ask about the schools there. Thanks.

What's the gender ratio?
Population data shows 4,120 people on island in Feb 2024. Of this total, 2,076 were male, 2,044 were female. So almost an even split.
Dear, Mr. Richard. I am an Indonesian. Don't you want your videos to be translated into Indonesian?
Hi arif, thanks for visiting our channel. We don't have any plans to do an Indonesian translation at this time.
My fathers family the Joshua’s are from St Helena. Planning on visiting from Australia sometime soon ❤
Hi Kerry, the Joshua name is still well represented on the island. The phone directory lists 38 entries, which suggests there will be quite a few more actual individuals with that name. Thanks for stopping by our channel. Hope you do get to make that visit from Australia one day. Napoleon there???
Not anymore. Although he died on St Helena in 1821 and was buried here, his body was exhumed and removed to Les Invalides in Paris, France, in 1840. However, his tomb on St Helena and Longwood House where he was held captive are now both French property and well maintained as museum attractions. You may find this article about Longwood House of interest, from our blog: whatthesaintsdidnext.com/longwood-house-st-helena-final-home-of-napoleon/ Thanks for visiting our channel 😊
I’ll visit some day. This video did a great job of advertising.

Isn't napoleons tomb in france?
Hi Tu Chenz, thanks for checking out our video 👍 Napoleon died on St Helena in 1821 where he was entombed and remained until 1840, when his body was removed to France where it now rests in Les Invalides, Paris. His empty Tomb on St Helena is, today, a very popular tourist attraction, as is Longwood House, his last residence. 😊
How does foreigners survive in saint helena, the wages is low compare to cost of living, rent is as high as 500 pounds per month, why salary is up to 800 pounds
Cost of living for most people is generally high, on St Helena. With most goods, including food, being imported, this adds to the all round costs. It's tough, but people manage.
Fantastic road, well-done to all😂❤❤❤❤
Cheers Valerie 👍thanks for the comment and stopping by the channel 😊
why are they respecting an empty tomb? isnt it in paris now? lol
Yes, Napoleon's body is now in Les Invalides, Paris. This video shows a ceremony on St Helena, at The Tomb of Napoleon Bonaparte, on 15 October 2015, exactly 200 years since the Frenchman arrived on the island. It was to mark a significant moment in the island's history along with French dignitaries, the Island's Governor and members of the public. There is also an annual ceremony held on 5 May at The Tomb to commemorate Napoleon's death.

Another portuguese territory taken by the British, only kept the name, "Helena".
Hey Nuno, it was indeed the Portuguese who discovered St Helena, in 1502. Over the years ships from various countries would stop by for rest and water, however, no one actually settled the island until the British did so, in 1659. Thanks for stopping by our channel and for your comment. All the best from St Helena 😊
Brilliant video 🎥
Thanks so much, Paul 👍Glad you enjoyed it😊
Wow , a good job for ex carrier pilots.
😂😂 Hopefully we won't be needing arrestor cables anytime soon! TBH, now the airport has been operating for seven years and we get to see the flight in/out every week, it's actually not all that dramatic at all, compared to some of the airports we've seen on KZread from other places. There have been a couple of RAF C-17 landings since this was filmed, so the 757 no longer holds the title of largest aircraft to land at St Helena. Beautiful island ,reminds me of Hawaii, my family is from Saint Helena.

Just got talking to a young girl from there who’s moved to Scotland 🏴 I didn’t even know it existed, it was so nice to learn about St Helena and meeting someone from there. What an interesting place. I do hope that the people are compensated well for having been colonised like that.
Hi Steffi, thanks for checking out our channel and your comment 👍Always great to hear of people learning about St Helena for the first time. Cheers 😊
In 2020 I got to know this island and ever since then it became a dream for me to visit one day. I go around like insane and tell people that one day I am going to go there and write a novel about solitude. For now it seems like it is beyond my reach I am happy though becuase longing for there is keeping me going forward as someone who struggles for finding a meaning of their life. It is okay Saint Helena wait for me becuase hopefully I am going to show up there one day
We will wait for you, Maria ❤️ St Helena really does offer the opportunity to 'unplug' from the world and reflect. A few times a week, in the late afternoons, we usually hike to a place called Cox's Battery, sit on the cliff top and just take in the amazing ocean view in front of us, in complete solitude. Very peaceful and good for the soul. Hope to see you here one day 👍Best wishes from St Helena 😊

Do they have internet connection
Hi Nurul, yes, we have internet services on St Helena provided by Sure South Atlantic. 👍 Until recently internet came via an expensive satellite link with limited bandwidth, so speeds were extremely slow and data packages were limited. In October 2023, the Island’s digital link switched from a satellite to the Equiano fibre-optic, undersea cable, which has significantly enhanced the internet service for consumers, including affordable, unlimited data plans for the first time. Question, What do locals think of Napoleon? Are they proud to house him there, ashamed or do they just ignore it? Loved the video, from Iceland 🇮🇸
Hi @simmilimmi5383, interesting question. We would say 'indifference' is probably the word that sums up local feelings toward Napoleon. Thanks for stopping by the channel - Iceland is on our 'would love to' list for a photography/filmmaking visit someday 😊

How did Napoleon enjoy his visit?
Hi Keith, thanks for checking out our channel and your comment. As far as we understand, Napoleon was not very impressed with St Helena and did not enjoy living (being held) in Longwood. However, when he first arrived on the island, Longwood House was not yet ready, so he spent the first two months living at The Briars. The cool climate and quiet location there suited the emperor. He particularly enjoyed the company of his hosts, the Balcombes, and strolling the surrounding gardens. His time at the Briars is said to be his happiest on St Helena. whatthesaintsdidnext.com/the-napoleon-st-helena-history-remembered-200-years-on/ “The only good thing about St Helena is the coffee,” Napoleon supposedly proclaimed. He was an avid coffee lover and a great fan of the island’s green-tipped Bourbon Arabica beans.
My great great grandmother Maria Mittens moved to New Zealand from St Helena. Would love to visit some day
Hi @Jp-do9ny, you may be interested to know there are five 'Mittens' names listed in the local phone directory, so the family name is still on the island and most likely related to you as well. How about that! Hope you get to make a visit someday. Thanks for visiting our channel and your comment. Cheers 😊
Interesting video thank you are the flights to the island better now ?? Thank you.
Hi Richard, it depends on what you mean re flights? There remain, unfortunately, the possibility of delays and postponements due to unfavourable weather at St Helena, which as we saw during 2023, can happen at any time of the year. Generally this means persistent low cloud and poor visibility for landing. Will try to get hold of some hard data for you. But otherwise, the service provider, Airlink, do an excellent job of operating the flights. Thanks for viewing the video and your comment 👍
@@whatthesaintsdidnext Yes thank you so Airlink is the airline that is flying in and out of St Helena.

Hey @marten6578, thanks for checking out the video 👍it was St Helena winter time when we filmed this, as you can tell by all the layers the guys are wearing 😊
Must have been a surreal event, a 757 taking off in this beautiful remote island
It really was, Malti 😊 Once we heard it was coming we were all looking the aircraft type up and there was so much anticipation. When it arrived that first time we were all so impressed with how easily it landed. The Titan Airways 757 kept the island connected throughout the Covid crisis, plus it provided direct flights to UK, so it is very fondly remembered by islanders.

❤️😎👍👍
Why all the cars? Surely not needed.
Hi @JohnPanto, yes, unfortunately the island has failed to implement a practical and effective public transport system so private vehicles have become essential for getting around. Although the island's footprint is quite small, (47 sq miles) the terrain is all mountainous, which makes walking or cycling a challenging way to get around. Although Jamestown looks particularly congested during working hours on weekdays, elsewhere on the island is quite different and traffic volumes are very low. You may well enjoy our 'Driving on St Helena' video which gives a better sense of roads/traffic outside of town: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZqF3rsmJiczAYrA.html Thanks for your comment, all the best from St Helena 😊
