Ascension Island - Ep. 26
We make a mid-Atlantic stop at Ascension Island and it was well worth it. An interesting island with a moon-like appearance and a variety of people; short term and long term but all come from somewhere else. I meet some traveling nurses who take me on a hike over a huge old lava flow to some tide pools with shrimp that aren't found any other place on earth. We visit the aptly named Green Mountain and learn that it wasn't always green. We stop at the abandoned NASA station and spend Thanksgiving on the beach.

It was interesting and a bit creepy all at the same time.
I spent 20 weeks living in a tent at English Bay in 1982. This was before the arrival of people who came for sport fishing, they messed up the shark behaviour by throwing lots of bait into the water because before they did that the sharks stayed well away from the shore. So, in 1982 I spent a lot of time snorkelling in English Bay. I also walked to the top of Green Mountain quite a few times, usually starting from Two Boats, just for the change from hot, dry and constant sunshine to cool and damp. I also watched turtles hatching and running down to the sea and saw lots of land crabs as well. I still have my old passport with a dew pond stamp in it. I still remember watching the path of the sun in the sky on the days when it went from travelling north of the island to travelling south of the island, I had a deep tan that year.

Wow what an amazing adventure!! What made you decide to do this and how did you pick Ascension?? I really wanted to get in the water, it was so clear and beautiful.
The colors in some of those crabs was amazing.

Thank you for watching Greg!!
Interestingly enough I was on that island in 1965 serving in the Air Force. I climbed Green Mountain which at the time had one tree. My unit 2862nd GEEIA from Patrick AFB in Florida built 3 towers that supported what was the eastern test range. We lived in tents and got supplies weekly via the AFB at Recife, Brazil.

I bet that was interesting! I’m sure it’s changed a lot since you were there!! I’m glad we didn’t have to live in a tent there. 😎

Excellent video. One of the best and most informative videos I have seen on Ascension Island. Thanks.

@@timfeast6609 Its the grocery store next door to The Saint's Club. I didn't have any good video of it so I found a photo of the front door online. I wished I had filmed it. How long have you lived there?
Shopping? Health Care?
@GoebelsGoneGlobal

There is NO shopping what so ever!! There is a small grocery store and a store on the American base but we didn't go in that store so I don't know what it had. Health care should be good there because I met a lot of traveling nurses who come to work at the hospital.

Forget shopping. Other than the basics, it all has to be shipped in or bought on line and sent down. Car parts take forever to get here. Great place though, all the different nationalities get on well. US, UK, St Helenian, S. African and Filippinos.
The music ruins it, I lasted 22 seconds.
