yes! they did. gramps always refers to it as "ole shaky" it got its name from: during take off the giant wheels it had would still be spinning, and when they were raised into the fuselage, it would create a gyroscopic effect and shake the plane :)

Showed him this video and it brought back sooooo many memories :) thank you very much!!! BTW... a C-124 was @ one time the WORLDS largest piston engine airplane ;)

Blimey! That was risky. The Boeing 747 is a heavy aeroplane, and Ascension Island has a short strip, so that would require a slow approach speed, early deployment of reverse thrusters and a high autobrake setting.

This is a 10020 feet runway... I would hardly call that a "short strip". Boeing 747s have been regularly used for this route for many years, and 747s regularly operate into airports with shorter runways than this. (Edit: One famous example is Princess Juliana International Airport (TNCM) in Sint Maarten which has a 7546 feet runway but receives regular 747 traffic.)

catacombae we landed there on a C141B while not as big can be a heavy sob. Other than it being the copilot's first time landing there with the up grade and dip not a problem. we did land twice though, once in the beginning and once in the middle. I was sitting in IP seat enjoying the fun.

What the hell are you on about? If you can prove American Airlines and Ryanair fly to Ascencion Island I'll pay you £100,000,000,000,000
