This song is beautiful, only Mr. Armstrong could do this song justice, he sounds like a grandfather telling his grandchildren a story through his eyes. I used to sing this song to my girls some time's while tucking them into bed at night, I sang it to my grandkids as well.

From the age of seven he lived with a family of Lithuanian Jews who took him in and treated him like family. He was fluent in Yiddish and wore a Star of David until the end of his life in their memory.

His voice started that way from a cold that he made worse playing in open areas. He later had surgery to try and fix and it made his voice worse. Personally I like his voice. Also I’d recommend listening to some of the songs he performed with Ella Fitzgerald. Fantastic.

The grandpa we all wish we had... YES. Ol' Satchmo was better known as a Jazz trumpet player, but he also had a few songs that he sang on that he was known for. "Hello Dolly" from the musical movie was another big song he sang on, and it went to #1.

A while back, you were surprised to hear a song from an old advert pop up. Well, on that theme react to "Mad About the Boy" sung by the great Dinah Washington. Dinah was a huge influence on the young Aretha Franklin and much later on the young Amy Winehouse. Some other great songs by Dinah would be "What a Difference a Day Made" and September in the Rain". In many ways, Dinah bridged the gap between her contemporaries - Ella Fitzgerald/Sarah Vaughan, for example - and the emerging soul singers of the late 50s/early60s.

It is interesting information from Roger Oran's comment. Louis Armstrong performed in countless smoky nightclubs and concert halls, and had to breathe in decades of heavy industrial pollution during the 20th Century. All of that surely also contributed to his gravelly voice later in his musical career. It has been reported that Louis Armstrong also smoked marijuana after his concerts, which cannot be good for his voice, either.
