    @@ianboard544 He definitely should have received a Best Supporting Actor nomination and win! He was fantastic and a perfect foil for Nicholson's neurotic character (I would even add Cuba Gooding, Jr. for a BSA nod as well because he was just hilarious lol).

    When he exaggerates the pronunciation of “molasses” I had tears in my eyes. He was explaining the resemblance of Cuba Gooding’s skin color. Like others are blind. 🤣

    Agreed! There's something so...organic about this film. It's like taking a peek into the lives of real people. I never skip watching this whenever it comes on even though I have it on DVD lol. Just a brilliant movie all around!

    @@DarlingNikki2 Yes, that's what's missing from modern movies and TV shows. You can almost feel the writers trepidation in trying to carefully navigate the minefield of not offending anyone. That's why the dialogue sounds so fake and unnatural these days.

    Probably some of both. Watch is older movies and you can see him develop the basic persona he uses. I think "Missouri Breaks" was his breakout performance... for me, at least. Well worth seeing if you haven't.

    6:34 This part reminds me of my father. He actually did this one time shouting across the restaurant for an order. When I first saw this scene I was in tears laughing. He even looked so similar to Jack which makes it even funnier. R.I.P. father.

    I was a kid when I saw this movie. My mind was all about cartoons and action. But this is the first movie to trigger something in my brain to appreciate good character writing.

    Nicholson is a formidable actor. No clue if I could say 2 lines after his lines. He won Oscars for roles nobody dares to remake. I dont like him as a human, but as an actor....he is...unique. ❤😊

    I feel the tension in every line of this exchange. It's like a verbal jousting match with no holds barred. The characters are so sharply defined, it's like watching a masterclass in dialogue.

    Don't know how many times I've seen this film and I never cease to laugh. The interpretation of Jack Nicholson was superb but nevertheless he was only one of many just a superb actors. :-)

    I always liked Kinnear, starting with "Talk Soup." He did do well in this film. I wonder what happened to his career. There's probably a video about him.

    Actually the performance I admired the most was that of Greg Kinnear. He was so good with the utter speechlessness at Melvin’s hideous rant. And his speech about his father disowning him due to his sexual orientation was heart-rending. And I loved the flounce he gave at once point when turning away from the monster!
