Verdell is one beautiful little dog. Melvin truly loves verdell.

The dog should have been given Best Supporting Actor award

He's crying and laughing at the same time. Crying because he's supposed to be such a hard ass, laughing at himself for the same reason. He finds himself getting emotional "over an ugly dog." That's an Oscar winning performance there my friends.

I remember watching this with my tough big brother who had never seen it before.. he was in his mid 20s. That scene where he starts to cry as he's locking the door made my brother start to tear up and I was touched because my brother never cries.

That scene crushes me when verdel is hurt to see Melvin struggling against his coping mechanism because he knows verdel is leaving him

They should have special Oscars for non-human 😉 actors. Along with this dog, there have been other animals in films that have been great.

Jack is a genius at this role.

The casting , the script , the whole damn thing was just cinema chemistry

2:54 I love this character so much. He is clearly hurt that his dog doesn’t seem excited to see him or come home but he is not going to force him or make him do anything. So sad! He is accepting and understanding and sweet.

Jack is one amazing actor!

When I was Young My mom bought a little pug pincher and at first he irritated me I couldn't stand his his little bug eyed face or his obnoxious barking he chewed and pissed on my things all the time and if I yelled at him my mom always took his side which annoyed me even more. One Christmas I was mad that he chewed up one of the little accessories to a present I just got and before I could even get angry at him my mom laughed to my dad and said he was just like a little brother to me and I just looked at him and smiled just like Melvin did when he saw Verdelle I loved him with all my heart and he loved me. Once I was sick and vomiting he kept barking outside my door and eventually dad let him in my room I was afraid he was gonna jump all over me and try to lick me or something but he calmly laid across my neck to help me sweat it out and that's when I knew he saw me as his brother too. He later became diagnosed with an enlarged heart and passed away but I never forget the love he honored and blessed me with he opened my heart and showed me what true love actually is. Now whenever I see dogs I can't help but smile I could be in the angriest of moods but whenever I see a dog the anger melts away because they truly are the greatest friends you will ever make in life.

That is such a cute dog.

The only thing that made him feel human is now being taken away from him...I know how that feels.

The amount of times my family and I quote “over a dog...” is insane

One of the things I love about Jack Nicholson is the fact that, even when the coverage is over his shoulder or it's a clean close-up of another actor in the scene, he gives the same performance, or at least the same intensity, spirit and energy of performance, as he does for the wide/s and his close-ups. Now, you might think that's standard or it _should_ be standard. But at Jack's end of town, it really isn't. In fact, _some_ big stars won't even interact with supporting players outside of scenes. Not extras, other members of the ensemble. I know of one actor who won't even lower himself to running lines or discussing elements of their scenes together.

Hollywood should research this film. Even though there were some things that people might see it as 'political', it was never in-your-face about it. It's closer to reality than the crap I see on TV these days. Such a damn good movie.

I quit watching a lot of TV in the 80x including all sitcoms because it was such crap.

I watched my sisters cat for the past year and two months. She went home today and it reminded me of this scene. It’s so quiet in here and I miss her funny personality and when she would run over to me to rub her head. I feel so sad and I kept thinking “over a dog” from this movie lol.

It’s both laughing but discreetly crying . He’s supposed to be a horrible man, but little Verdell helps him access his humanity. I don’t think he realizes he can feel this way about anyone but himself. Jack Nicholson is one of the best!

Very foolish of Melvin to send the doctor over. From that point on, he would never be able to determine if Carol was hanging around him because she liked him for him or if she was just putting up with him because her son is sick and needs medical attention.
