5:50 she is like: cmon, continue with your cheesy lines. But then he backs his admission with examples that he really watched her, truly appreciates her as a human being. And the acting… how Helen becomes flabbergasted at first and then teary - this brings a tear to my eye too. I mean, there are many good people whose goodness is sometimes not observed or acknowledged by other people and they are left to live sad lives. Beautiful movie, a masterpiece. Fully deserved Oscars in the year when Titanic has swept almost all awards. I continue coming back to rewatch scenes from the movie or even the full movies when I feel so

It is a nice touch that the script kept having Melvin trying to come up with lines, he writes romance novels, that is his job! He tries applying these lines and half the time they backfire as soon as the calculating nature is revealed.

Curious, from beginning to delightful end in this delightful scene....being a detail obsessed, amateur cinema critic(appreciater).... ....I felt a strong under surface vibe of Paris, the Marais.... Then after Melvin comes up the steps and is standing now heart to heart with the lovely Carol, on the wall beside them is a pastel print of the Eiffel tower. Perfect, by design? Sure... That made me laugh out loud. Then after that bell ringing bouquet of a compliment, and the best kiss I have ever seen in modern cinema, here I broke down in tears....and as they are walking in front of the bakery, the music here sounded totally Paris, early morning.... A well written, perfectly acted, directed, shot and edited scene. This is one of the countless reasons why I include cinema, filmmaking, storytelling, theater in my Chinese ChiGong energy healing private practice.......amen

Helen Hunt is such an amazing actor. I have thought about this scene many times over the years. Having a partner who is just so awful in ways, but is handsome, brilliant and sees me like no one else is a dilemma. Sometimes I think, maybe this is as good as it gets. Sometimes I think that's it, I'm done and spend a lot of time mentally going through all that it would take to leave and what life would or could be like without him, or possibly with someone else, until I resign myself in exhaustion, or he redeems himself until the next time. I have a wise friend who once said that the most excellent people are often also the most difficult. The alternative is those people like most people - not that great but not that bad either. It's hard to know which version of life is more peaceful, or disappointing...

Yeah that's true. The humour is subtle. It's for mature people. It's not a regular rom-com. No character has a normal or good life overall and they try to deal with it and still keep space for real emotions. It's not easy appreciating this love story. The characters speak their harsh truths, overcome very discomforting experiences and still create a good life. This film makes you feel uneasy at times. I can't say if it's boring but unusual, yes it is.
