Melvin is a complicated and flawed man suffering from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, probably Narcissitic Personality Disorder and some other behavioral issues, but somethings have touched him and moved him beyond his routines that were propping up his life but never allowing him to grow. He was caged and trapped and angry about it all. But then he takes in a little dog and the dog opens him up to the possibility that he can love and grow and he sees Helen, who was once confined to his compulsive disorder in a box, and she breaks into his world, his life, and he falls in love with her and by the end she comes to love him. Who knows if they succeed, they have a lot going against them as a couple, but a lot going for them too. Wonderful film.

Most married men or those in long term relationships I've seen many of them don't do or have any of the things that brought them comfort before the relationship. Most male friends I've had over the years once they got married, they threw out or sold almost all the furniture they owned before the relationship, they don't or rarely ever play video games, they don't stay out late drinking with their buddies, they don't make their own choices, wear the clothes they want, drive the car they want or go on vacations they want. It's because they've been fixed (similar to a dog) to better match to a women's wants and desires. This guy was probably better off not taking antipsychotic medication because most of that medication causes the very thing it promises to avoid. But now to appease her he started taking it again which this may end up killing his creativity which will make him a shitty writer, hell lose his job and his expensive apartment in Manhattan as a result and he'll be homeless or die in a ditch somewhere, meanwhile she will have already moved on to the next rich writer living in Manhattan, or moved back in with her mom which didn't seem like that bad of a situation to be honest

For me that was the best scene of the whole movie......
This is one of the films that I wish I could watch for the first time AGAIN. It's great every time I watch it but the first time it really blew my mind.
how could you say no to this line. Great actor and great music. Their eyes, their faces.

I clicked on the thumbnail and immediately closed the video as i saw a Nicholson there. Such a moron and such a bad actor
this movie makes me want to be a better man! 🤠☺️
And that, gentlemen, is how you win a woman's heart.
This movie is filled with some great comeback lines.. and this one is a real gem.
I don't even like Jack Nicholson despite his talent. But when he said this line tears streamed down my face. That is the most powerful complement possible for a man to give a woman. At our best, that is what we are supposed to do! Inspire the best in a man.

Only if the man is 6 foot with a strong jawline if not then someone rich and famous like Jack Nicholson. 😅
That compliment is at the root of everything a woman wants to be in a relationship, a fixer, it provides meaning and purpose to a relationship.

I don't think that's the case, for some women maybe, but I for one don't want a relationship where I need to fix someone, that's not what partners should do for each other. That's what shrinks are for. I think partners are there to give comfort and back or boost each other up.

Women don't want to fix you up. But they really appreciate it if you decide to become a better person because of them. The difference is subtle but there.
i can watch this a zillion times and each is better than the first…👊‼️🔥🥂
I told my girlfriend this line and will never forget when I did. I never thought I'd ever tell a woman that, but somehow she makes me better and makes want to be better for her

Great movie...the dog was so adorable!! 🤗
She should've told him ".. and you make me want to be an older woman." Haha!
Carol Connelly is the PERFECT woman. Besides that this film is absolutely fantastic and in my top 10 best movies ever it also shows the, to me, perfect woman. Carol Connelly(Helen Hunt) is so strong that she sometimes can be weak without losing herself. She has principles but is kind and open to another person even when that person is totally different then herself. She is absolutely beautiful and in addition has little sounds of her own. Oh man this it. The perfect specimen :)
Its sad to me cuz everyone is so judgemental of him but he always keeps to himself and minds his own business and hopes for the same from others.
If only every guy could find the woman that invokes that desire.
See? Good actors, great writing, the right background music - there you have it. It's not that difficult!

What a beautiful piece of masterclass writing
Love this scene & this whole movie!!!
i said the same to my wife years ago and it was true, thats what real love is 💕💕💕
Obama used this line during is speech at Mandela's funeral......... great speech
This is one of the best movies ever love it
Best scene.. love the entire movie but this is good!
"Pay me a compliment, Melvin. I need one. Quick." Helen Hunt carries this movie. Jack Nicholson is really just being Jack. Backed into a corner, he comes out with a few gems, but Helen's character comes from a very difficult place and Jack's character is basically a egotistical chauvinist with a minor disability.

I'm not a boy and I'm not alone suffering for a love that I've lost or that I never had,.I'm not sad for anything that I can be aware of. I fact, I'm a happy man with a beatiful wife and a gorgeous son. In other words: I'm complete. But, despite all this, every time that I've seen this scene I can't control my heart, my eyes and my tears. I don't know, but I believe these guys are capable to take me to somewhere in my past (or probably on my next life) in which I'm somebody that lives in pain and sorrow. If Jack is just a phenomenal actor, Helen (in this rol) is one of the most beautiful women I never thought existed.

Never saw the movie but....anytime anyone "idealizes" you like that, get ready for their letdown and finally their devaluation. its a narcissist trait. See others flaws and then decide if you can live with them. That's real love.

Sorry MrAkos, the liberals will find too many racial non-inclusive, there weren't enough obese people or people of color or the couple gay people they put in the movie just wasn't enough. Classic movie! While Helen Hunt may have not been so drop-dead gorgeous as, say, Michelle Pfeiffer, she possessed that *classical* beauty -- that would capture the eye of a sculptor. No wonder Greg Kinnear's character was inspired to sketch her in the semi-nude!
