"As Good As It Gets" - Final

As Good as It Gets (1997) Director: James L. Brooks
#
I might be the only person on the face of the earth that knows you're the greatest woman on earth. I might be the only one who appreciates how amazing you are in every single thing that you do, and how you are with Spencer, "Spence," and in every single thought that you have, and how you say what you mean, and how you almost always mean something that's all about being straight and good. I think most people miss that about you, and I watch them, wondering how they can watch you bring their food, and clear their tables and never get that they just met the greatest woman alive. And the fact that I get it makes me feel good, about me.

I don't know what it is. But whenever this movie ends and fades to black, it always makes me feel kind of sad. It's almost as if it is a reminder that none of it is real and these wonderful characters aren't real. I always want to find a way to turn the light back on and continue being with them in their world. Very few movies give me that type of feeling. There's a special magic to this movie. It's a beautiful blend of likeable but flawed characters, uplifting soundtrack and the romanticized New York setting. The whole movie even has a bright "sunshiny" color palate if that makes sense. And it flows almost like a great play. So great.

I saw this movie when I was 12 around the first week it was released on VHS at Blockbuster and found it a very quirky and light romantic comedy but nearly 25 years later to be a single man struggling with anxious OCD traits and post-pandemic social alienation it's just... heart breakingly inspiring

Me: I feel sorry for the guy in the drive through, the girl at the check out, and even the cop who gave her a ticket for rushing to pick up her nephews at school because their Mom was rushed to hospital. I feel sorry for them because they just met the most caring selfless loving person on this earth, and they will never know it. And I’m so happy because I do, and now she is my wife.

She was reluctant to hear all the nice things he had to say about her until he mentioned her son. Letting her know what an amazing mom she is. Her whole face changed. I think even with as hard as she works and everything she does for her son, she often questions to herself am I a good mother? (which I think most moms do) So when she heard him say "how amazing you are with spence" her whole demeanor changed. She felt fully seen. ❤

That's the point of the phrase. It's not a good pickup line, it just show how awkward he is talking with people in real life and how Helen Hunt character accept him in spite of that. In case you didn't notice Melvin is not someone you want to model if you want to be a ladies man. Sorry about the girl tho, I've also quoted corny lines from movies to poor results, it's all in the context.

Excellent that people without disabilities can grab hearts and Oscars acting characters tgat need support in real life and would be shunned and wait ages for therapists I am for all films about people like Melvin but in real lif3 they are shunned 😣
