the song was inspired by a nightmare Steve Harris had after watching the film Damien: Omen II. In addition to the album's artwork and title, the song was a prominent target of religious groups in the United States who accused Iron Maiden of being a Satanic group. The controversy led to organised burnings of the group's albums as well as several protests during their 1982 tour, although this would only serve to give the band more publicity. Harris has since commented that the accusations made against them were "mad. They completely got the wrong end of the stick. They obviously hadn't read the lyrics. They just wanted to believe all that rubbish about us being Satanists.

You can't take everything you hear in music too literal, otherwise Eminem would be behind bars for murdering his gf a hundred times over. It's just imagery and theater. It's fun. I listened to this song when I was 8 years old and devil worshipping is the laaaaaast thing on my list of interests. Gotta keep your mind open and with that open mind, your children are able to listen to all this cool music without being stupid enough to be influenced by it. I notice Brad can get uncomfortable from time to time from lyrics or images in videos that go against his belief system. Just look to your left and see how Lex is totally vibing and take something from that. It'll go a long way to you letting more experiences and art in.

Iron Maiden bassist Steve Harris said he wrote the song about a nightmare. Critics tried to pan the band as 'satanic' 😈 'The number of the beast' was a pivotal record for Iron Maiden in 1982... they were starting to become popular on 2 albums, but then had to part ways w/ their singer Paul Di'Anno in 1981. They opted to hire vocalist Bruce Dickinson and needed to make their 3rd album that established the band AND a new singer... Thankfully, they delivered as 'Number of the beast' went to #1 on the UK charts and platinum sales in the US🤘🤘

Ive watched a bunch of your reaction videos now and I see it plain as day, Lex is a full on "Metal Head" Its so beautiful to see someone being born into the light of Metal. Its a huge family and once you are in, youre in for life. There is no going back. When you really understand what "Metal" is and what it isnt... You begin to see the world differently and awaken to something deeper and more meaningful. A different level of intelligence and understanding. A group of people that are not enslaved by consumerism and conformity. Here you can be exactly who you are with no judgement. Your "Metal family" accepts and loves you and rejoices in your individuality. Free thinking, questioning all you believe and everything you stood for... We all watch like proud parents. Metal is a family that you can count on across the globe. You have millions of brothers and sisters and help or is never far away if you need it. Even though every "Metal Head" stands completely alone, we never truly are because each one of us belongs to and upholds the values of the biggest baddest family on the planet Earth. Pantera - "Walk" Metalllica - "Fade to Black" Lamb of God - "Momento Mori" Butcher Babies - "Mr Slow death" Black Label Society - "Funeral Bell" Texas Hippie Coalition - "Turn it up" Just a couple off the top. \m/

Well sort of. It's a rewrite of the Revelations 13:18 verse. Then if you consider the entire bible has been rewritten dozens of times since it's stories were first written and combined into one book, who knows what the original text would be. The protestant King James version, from the 1600's, 1600 years after the agreed upon date of death of Jesus Christ, and more common to England, would be "Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six."

@@BrindleChase Re-interpreted may be a better way of putting it. Some Bibles are “literal” word for word translations. Others are “figurative” translations. The language of certain phrases changes over time as our language changes or as new discoveries are found in the scrolls to determine the original meanings of ancient words, but there’s no illuminati conspiracy theory going on here with the supposed rewriting of the Bible… it’s all nonsense.

I always loved the story that Bruce Dickinson tells about how that scream he did in the intro of “Number of the Beast” was legitimately a complete accident. He’d been doing takes over and over again and just couldn’t get a scream he was happy with. He got _really pissed_ and just screeched in frustration, and the tape just happened to be rolling. To this day, he has _never_ been able to make a scream like that again.
