I'm grateful to the miltary for developing NODS. We use them in civilian EMS aviation so we can operate (especially SAR) at night/ low light /poor visibility conditions and especially the thermal imaging has probably saved thousands of lives globally. If you're looking for some guy out at sea day or night, the thermal signature of a person stands out so vividly. Even bodies retain enough heat for hours to be picked up even if submerged (close to surface of course).

The Sicario scene where he sticks his finger in the trigger guard was done to purposefully leave an inaccurate pattern of gun fire in the target (at that range he wasnt going to miss much) to simulate a lower level of training in the attacker for those who would come after to analyze who the attacking party was and seek revenge which is very common in the Cartel-controlled AOE. They were purposefully trying to avoid operator-level precision and instead insinuate that the attack was perpetrated by a rival gang.

Which still don't make any sort of sense. Because the gun in question is a 92F, which used to be standard issue for the US military. So it would still lead back to the US and not to the Cartels.

@BlackRifleCoffeeCompany, you can in fact hide from thermal imaging using simple glass ( as long as you are not physically touching the glass giving it heat). Glass acts as a mirror, if you look directly as a window while using a thermal imager, you will see your own heat signature.

That Benicio Del Toro “finger bang bang” move isn’t very traditional and technical, but it IS from real life. Narcos pull off that move usually in higher populated areas as a signal to others that hear that repeated bang that someone is being actively murdered and that this could happen to you, too.

I just did a quick google on what NODs can cost and they can be stupidly expensive. I found some that cost $30k and to have one for every actor that's in a firefight and you have to have at least 1 pair of backup per actor if they break so that is a shit tone of money. So just faking it is so much cheaper and like 99.9% of the audience will never know anyway.

Driving an M113 on a tank trail in the middle of a snowstorm in Grafowener Germany in 88 wearing Pvs-5's at 19 as a PFC was definitely a butt clenching experience. Blackout markers on the track ahead was almost invisible. Walking at night with Pvs-7's was almost a guaranteed twisted ankle, zero depth perception. Pvs-4 on a 249 or 60 was only good for the first burst due to whiteout. Good to see tech improving. The Paq4 wasn't horrible though with Pvs-7's.

101st, 2/ 327inf 1983. I got to play with a starlight scope and an thermal imager. The thermal scope was huge and required nitrogen cartridges to cool down the sensor. Took two men to carry the thermal imager. I was also chosen to drive for the NAVSTAR contractors when developing and testing the new GPS system in 1984 at Ft Campbell. The unit I helped test was about as big as a PRC-77 and had a touch pad on a spaghetti cord. The 80’s were an awesome time for military advancements.
