    This is a great technique to beat bigger people. Though like Janis said it requires strength from the bicep, lats, hand, and wrist to block their hook. Making them hold onto you is a great way to top roll into their fingers. The lat drag (backpressure) is only as good as the bicep/brachioradialis that keeps the elbow angle tight and keep up pressure into the opponents fingers. Great video thanks guys!

  • @WizardOfCheese

    @WizardOfCheese

    4 жыл бұрын

    if you lean forward with your shoulder the angle becomes easier for lat drag without bicep as much because its going through the bone instead of against it (if that makes sense) similar with kings-move, 'side pressure' is coming through bicep when your whole arm is pronated and you are camping under the table, instead of 'actual side-pressure' stood up ... because of the angle.

    Great video! Would have been even better if Janis broke down his recent match vs Holland since it was good example of hook vs top-roll fight. What worked for him, what didn't, how was he able to come back from 2 bad starts etc. It's one thing to present theory like this but another to give real life examples.

    Janis is strong inside himself. He was able to stop Holland and, although he couldn't beat him in the hook, he was able to hold effectively until he could transition to a press. So I suppose the takeaway is have a strong defensive hook, a strong press, and be able to efficiently transition between them - even if your initial movement is with the intent of toprolling. Of course if you don't want to have to get so great at the defensive hook and also the press but do want to rely on your pronation for this, there's always the extreme toproll aka the king's move 😁

  • @finnsk3

    It's interesting that Janis didn't talk about chopping and low hand top roll against low hand hookers. If I am against a guy I know is going to low hook every time I will get a low grip on their hand. My bottom fingers will be on the opponents wrist. This will allow you to engage the lat more. You push hard down on their wrist with your hand and raise your wrist which blocks their hook. Then you just rotate and it sets your top roll. The chopping movement is key for me to stop the hook.

    A tec question for Amolins. When there is pressure and an opponent holds hard on my hand(no streps) ist it better than to use pronation from the hand joints to the forearm generating pressure on the little finger of the opponent? So, shortly, if I have no power in the wrist is it better to use the forearm bone as a leverage or it could be dangerous. Sorry for my bad english

    I find it much harder to do such techniques in the strap, since the wrist is tied to the forearm, is there any way to deal with that? Maybe a loose strap? getting the strap lower on your forearm? Hope to see that in a future video, cuz this one was super informative, thanks!

    so to summarize, a posting toproll is a better counter to a high hook, and a low-hand top roll is a better counter to a supinating hook
