I'm glad you guys are discovering that Mixing in mono to get your initial balance is a great old school mixing trick that has been out for a while. I've been using bx- solo to achieve my initial mix for years. Also try turning a mix down to as low as possible and you can really hear the balance of everything. Keep up the great work guys for the culture.

Courtney was onto something at 16:40 One of my favorite ways to really get a gnarly stereo field is taking a sound like a guitar, throwing on a massive reverb or delay (that normally comes out stereo), and then printing that or summing that to mono so when I pan it, it pans EVERY stereo effect on that track. I used to just throw a reverb on and pan something over, but you still get that spill from a stereo effect if you don't print in mono before you start panning.

Totally, i tend to use a mono delay and pan it to the opposite side, but when i start adding reverb to that delay, the stereo field from the reverb kinda f*cks up the whole effect. Ill try this for sure

In Studio One it is standard that you record, produce and mix in mono. When I was a beginner I used to bounce everything out to the master page still in mono. Guess what, you can just push the stereo button and everything is in stereo. When I found that out, my mixes were good in mono, in stereo OMG! And my last test is masterplan and the JBL speaker while driving to places and doing different things (trying to mimick how things sound when you are busy, go shopping, do things on your to do list etc cause that's when most people listen to music).

In Fl studio i load up parametric eq 2 then hipass up to 200hz and lowpass down to 2k and then turn the entire mix into mono using the knob at the bottom of master fader. This process has truly helped with spectral balance!!

To touch on Courtney comment on clipping vocals today I was mixing a song sent over and the vocal must of been recorded with a lot of distortion but it didn’t sound bad just had to get control of the dynamics but every Compressor I tried just sounded nasty the more I would compress the vocal the more that distortion was audible in a non pleasing way so what I ended up doing was clip gaining the vocal word for word and instead of adding a compressor I added standard CLIP by SIR AUDIO and it felt like magic !

That fruity limiter do be slappin. I just found out you can use the limiter side and the compressor side at the same time. Put it on your master after Maximus, straight knock... Your mixes will hit at -5LuFs. 🤣🤣🤣
