Anthony Giordano I agree, but I hate these blanket statements that is just mental. Anyone who has ever actually done difficult physical training, I’m not talking about high school sports, I’m talking about swat schools, military selection etc will tell you your mind is not enough. It is 100% physical and 100% mental.

Be country strong: running is the most important thing to focus on because it takes the longest to develop. To be a fast distance runner requires a strong core (planks and pushups) abs (situps). Add long walks and doing stairs every second step (just walk them to spare your knees) with 35 lbs weight. But mostly, the time your not working out or running, get a job at UPS, on a farm, or a moving company so you get used to using your body and all the small muscles that dont get covered by basic excercises.

@@Jeremy61300 Running requires dedication. Moving objects in short bursts hardens muscles, joints, ligaments and tendons but doesn't develop cardio. At minimum, you should be able to run 5 miles in under 45 minutes to not only be prepared.

Great advice Matt. There is one thing about basic. You will NEVER have any real time that you are not under physical strain. We were at double time every movement the formation made. Rifle was carried at port arms and never slung. When we stopped, we were at attention or parade rest. No sitting, rarely did we take seats for a block if instruction. Sleep deprived and physical stress takes a toll. We trained 6.5 days per week. It us doable and you are giving advice I wish I had before I shipped. Keep up the great wotk and congrstulations on becoming a 2Lt.

EVERYTHING is easier if you're in shape and it's one less thing to have to worry about. You can watch videos on PT tests for most of the services right here on KZread....look them up. Too many go with the lifting weights and some running style workouts, and that's great, but don't neglect body weight workouts either. If you can, a bench press, push up workout is great. You can buy a pack, and any pack will do, it doesn't have to be a military style ruck, or you could get a weight vest from Walmart. Put some weight in the pack and walk.....it's that simple. Do not....put more than you can handle in it. For an average guy, I'd say 20 lbs would be OK. Vary your weight, distance and speed...ruck marching is a great overall body conditioner. Also, try ruck marching after you've done some calisthenics or even a run to "pre-exhaust" yourself, just don't make the ruck march too long or carry too much weight. If you have some hills near where you live, run up, walk down....ruck these hills as well, it builds a great deal of power. Oh, and make sure you bring some water.....you need to be hydrated. Warm up prior to your workout, and stretch out really well when you're done. If I were any of you, unless you're a total beast, I wouldn't go all out on your initial PT test...don't destroy yourself...you want to leave room for improvement and you very probably will improve, your body doesn't have much of a choice with all the planned and incidental PT you'll get like when you get smoked...... and you will... Best advice I got was first, make sure you pass....but don't be first, and certainly don't be last.....Even if you're first, your DI, DS or what ever will still want to see some improvement and if you have a bad day later in training they may think you're being lazy (sandbagging). If you're last, you're GOING to get lots and LOTS of personal, individual attention and you don't want that kind of undivided attention. No one says you can't go all out on your final test though.... If you're in DEP, you have no excuse to not workout....take advantage of the time you have before you go. Make working out just part of your daily routine like brushing your teeth...make it a habit. You can even split up your workouts....morning, afternoon, night...etc.. If you have a month before you go, start now, you're going to get sore at boot camp anyway so it makes no difference. If you're overweight, lose the weight BEFORE you go to boot camp.

I'd put it around 2-4 years. The U.S. Army at least from what I know of are shooting for 90% - 95% combat readiness, within these 2 years. They're also testing out new lightweight jungle uniforms (Basically the same as OCP but better material and less pockets) This is probably aimed for North Korea. about 80% of ground troops are now training for jungle warfare and using face paint again. So those are basically "Hints" that there's going to be something going on quite soon.

I’ve talked about that with North Korea and if I had to guess I would say them. But you can’t tell for sure. Things may blow over and something else comes or or maybe a new terrorist Group comes up and attacks us majorly on out soil.

I managed to get just over 3 Minutes on the planks, and 80 Situps just under 2 Minutes. I still need to REALLY work on my pushups (I'm starting to weightlift), and I need to REALLY work on my running (I have an elliptical machine that can help).

I pulled this information from the Canadian Forces website. This will give (at least I hope) some specifics to help guide everyone. BEFORE Basic Training you should be able to: - run 5 kilometers, run 2.4 kilometers within a specific time range (it'll be different for men/women and different ages), do push-ups and sit-ups with a fill range of motion, complete a hand grip test and finally tread water for 2 minutes then swim 20 meters without a life jacket.

im gonna be enlisting in the National Guard soon and im fucked cause i cant even run a 1.5 mile under 20 min :( sit ups and push ups will hinder me a little but running will be my biggest downfall. I hope im a little more fit by the time i go to BCT

i dont like talking about amount of push up since i go sooo slow till i reach the bottom then go up back to midway up before going back down and finally up in the final stage and counting it as only 1 push up that probably took already between 10 to 15 seconds ... soo if you manage to make 60 of those in a minutes ... you are chuck norris and the time dont want to go against you...

I run super slow I might just be that guy during basic in august that does catch up during runs. I run 2 miles a day but I can do 50 push ups 70 sits ups just run times are super bad at 20 mins I ship in august for rotc. I stop and walk though cause i try to catch up and i've been running for over 3 weeks now.

Quick question, I literally just started working out a week ago, I can do maybe five pushups which is terrible, but I know I can slowly work my way up with those(hopefully), but my main problem is running. Everyone in my family has bad knees and when I tried to do about ten minutes of interval running my knees now hurt so badly i can barely walk and have been hurting all week with no change. I can't seem to find anything on whether or not this is serious or if I should just try to push past the pain and try to run again?

Hey Matt, just had a question about failure when it comes to PT. For instance it seems inevitable that doing a plank for 30 minutes you will have to drop your knees. Do drill sergeants expect you to fail and understand this? Would they rather see you drop you knees and keep trying over and over again? Just curious how failure is handled during basic. Thanks!
