@@therealboomhauer69 So the run down is... you will first go through Meps where you basically choose what rate/MOS/job you want and go through a couple screenings, then you head off to your perspective boot camp, after bootcamp you head to the A school that pertains to your chosen rate/MOS.

The only three places I have been so far is Pensacola, San Diego, Hawaii. All mostly during the summer. Sometimes I dont realize just how lucky I am. I'm very thankful that it worked out like this.

When I graduated A School I put on my “wish list” send me anywhere over seas as my top request, and then put my dream station last. I was sent to Souda Bay Greece which was an amazing command. I got to do so much, and travel all over Europe from there. When my second orders came out I put my dream station 3rd on my list and that’s what I ended up getting NAS Key West I’m from Michigan, so going home isn’t really an option. But I wouldn’t have it any other way

Great explanation/ learning. My son is in service...... I'm a retired ranger, though most of my family are Navy and proud of all of you who serve our great nation.

I was fortunate enough to get Rota, Spain as a first duty station out of A school. It was an absolute dream. It didn't do anything for my Navy career, but it sure did complete my personal goals of traveling the world before I turned 30, and experiencing a different kind of culture. I've decided the Navy isn't really my passion, and it's been a rough ride due to 2020, but I will never forget my experiences here. Choosing something far away from home can definitely make you appreciate what you've had your whole life. This is a great video and I would definitely take his advice.

Back when I was in, it was quite easy to spend an entire 20-year career in San Diego rotating between sea and shore duty. No internet back when I was in so we filled out “Dream Sheets” and were on the phone with our Detailer about six months or so before rotation date. As an Airdale, I was in Helo squadrons and you could even stay in the same command and rotate between the sea and shore components of that command and each community (HC, HS, HSL, Etc.) but since everything is Seahawks now, I guess you may move around a little more and do carrier deployments and later experience “Det Life” as I did on board destroyers or supply ships. Going from “Helo” to “Fixed Wing” (or vice versa) was rare when I was in.

I had volunteered for Sub School while in A School. In spite of that I still was given order for the surface Navy, VF-1 Wolfpack stationed at Miramar. I was told by the detailer that I could choose to still go subs or take the surface orders. I chose to still go subs. Looking back I was young and dumb at the time because being a MS, now called a CS, at a fighter squadron was a cake walk.

Being in a small enough rating to know your detailer doesn't hurt. Of course having great evals/fitreps helps too, like anything else.

As an AE in 87 we did not put in a wishlist . They put orders up in the board and we picked by class ranking. Listen to Nick and get as far away from home as possible .

For sertain rates (short a school) ur first orders will be given to you during bootcamp and most of the time they give u a dream sheet to fill out and kinda tell them where u want to go.

While I was on my Shore Duty at NS Great Lakes, I met a young HM at the clinic. He left his hometown in Mississippi, attended boot camp at Great Lakes, A School at Great Lakes (before it moved to TX), then a duty station at Great Lakes. Then, he left after 4 years. He told me that he joined the Navy to see the world, but the poor bastard never even got to cross the Mississippi River. LOL!!!

@@monsune888 : With your luck (and the Navy's help), then you may get to boot camp in the winter (up in Great Mistake, IL) and get sent back to FL for your 1st Duty Station. There are a lot of Navy installations in the Sunshine State, from the Panhandle all the way down to the Keys.

@@monsune888 : There is a saying in the Navy, "choose your rate (-ing), choose your fate." Though, there are HM's on ships/carriers/subs, but the majority of the HM's tend to work on the land-based installations (such as hospitals/clinics) or with the Marines. And based on what I have observed over my time in the military, USAF tends to take a better care of their personnel than the Navy. However, the majority of the Air Force Bases tend to be located in the middle of nowhere.

@@traemartin3421Depends. Some of my boys in Pensacola didn’t get their orders till they were like a week or 2 from graduating A-School, some of us already had orders in boot camp. Got San Diego for 3 years (shore duty). I got the “dream sheet” in boot camp not sure if you’ll get the same. But yeah as a PS, you can go overseas, but it’s all needs of the Navy. A few PSs I went to A-School with ended up in San Diego, Norfolk, and Point Mugu. Best of luck in boot camp tho 🤞

out of A school I requested Little Creek Va (I landed on the Hermitage LSD 34)... After 2 years I applied for a cross deck to an overseas duty station... I ended up in Holy Loch Scotland (USS Holland AS 32) for my last 18 mos in the Navy... Scotland was a blast!! To bad when the cold war ended, so did that base.

Got a question. If your a Seabee I know they have 2 main places they’re stationed In Gulfport or Port Hueneme. So can you get stationed somewhere else and do you change duty stations or will you stay in that same spot and just do deployments?

They said GPA, and ended up just giving us whatever orders.

Yes u can. I did it. It was called G orders. It's part of my MEPS contract on the morning of 9.11.2001 at age 17. It was 6am when I signed as it was happening in NYC. The program was called no rate. Un-dez rate. And a 5000 sign on. But be careful because the rates are locked up for rank like ABH3 VS ma3 is 100 percent open for E4 but 15 percent for ma2. Home station. So ya

I’ll save you the time long story short you can ask to be sent somewhere but at the end of the day the navies needs comes first so if you do well in school and you happen to want to go somewhere that the Navy needs you then yes but otherwise no they will send you wherever they want.

What jobs are mainly stationed at rota Spain?

Here’s what I have to say: I got my orders to Naples, Italy in basic after filling out a dream sheet, I was trying to get orders to San Diego. I’m an LS, and my orders that I received in Basic detailed I would be going to Meridian, MS for my “A” school and an additional “C” school, for a postal curriculum. NSA Naples is comprised of a few bases: Support Site, Capodichino, JFC, and Gaeta. As an LS, I would not try to get this duty station. This shore command does not prepare your for the fleet and it’s a better move to go straight to a ship out of here. I’d recommend this duty station later in your career or as your second command. Life as E-3 below is obviously not the best, but you’d find yourself in a better place as a petty officer. It’s a great command, but there’s plenty of people that will tell you it’s a career killer.

Peter Shin Again, you get your orders in boot camp. You do not choose at all in “A” school. The highest GPA, however, will get you AAP. Which advances you from E-3 and below, to an E-4 when you get to your duty station. That is of course, that you are able to operate as an SAT sailor and you stay out of trouble.

Peter Shin You have the opportunity to fill west coast on your dream sheet in bootcamp. You’ll either get it or not. As for Meridian, it’s in the middle of nowhere. You’re literally in a forest. There’s nothing to do. Hours are long. Every Wednesday is a field day so you clean from 1900-2100. You’ll be cleaning a lot. It’s a really HS toxic environment. There’s a party in the smoke pit every day. Smoke pit is in the middle of all the barracks. Marines also receive MOS training here so there’ll be marines and you might live in the Marine barracks. This doesn’t mean you’ll room with them. There’s room inspections and PT. There’s also Uniform inspections.

you need to go to formal college education for your specific religion you would like to practice in. Also they typically want people with experience so even when you finish school it may be awhile to get in.

Never saw anyone get what they put on their dream sheet. Ever. A school top 10% got the best posts. Someone else chose...i got Scotland. Turned out real well for me. Oh, if you put down Vietnam, you went. Only station. Shore duty someone else picked for me. I did get two more schools when i shipped over...1st and 2nd in class- Vietnam. It's all a lie!

@@NICKYMGTV Thank you. Do you have to have correctable vision of 20/20 to be an HM ?(that's what it says on the Navy website) I'm asking because I know a guy who got an HM contract but his eyes were ruled to be correctable to 20/25. With a situation like that, wouldn't they just change his job at boot camp considering he that he doesn't qualify for it.
