Cold water immersion is a popular tool used in fitness, especially for sports and recovery. Some have suggested that ice baths, and maybe even ice showers, can be great for your gains as well. Past research on CWIs hasn't been as clear, with most people to issues with achieving optimal temperatures being the biggest barrier. But a new study, a meta-analysis, might finally give us the complete insight we need about cold water immersion and its effect on our gains. Let's see if it's a good idea to dunk ourselves into an icy tub after training or we're better off avoiding it completely.

My new regime I've been trying (with good results so far): Hot shower immediately after workout Cold shower immediately before workout (to get hyped up for it)

Used to do it , but a cold shower before a workout will juste increase risk of injury , you cool your whole body down , and thus reduced muscle flexibility

Hey, I’ve been following your work for a long time and I’m a huge fan of it. I don’t want to comment on the content of this video, but I have to say that I got so used to the mouth not moving that it makes it feel a little bit weird now 😔 It won’t stop me from watching for sure, but I do know it’s also a lot more work for you to do in order to animate it. Have you considered doing a poll to check what the others think about it? I mean, you are also free to ignore my comment and continue doing your thing, I just wanted to pitch in the idea that might potentially be beneficial to you 😊 Whatever you decide, all that matters is that you’re happy with it and please provide us with awesome content ❤

Is there any info about saunas or steam rooms just after working out? I know they have great benefits in general but don't have any info about its effects on muscle growth if used just after working out.

@@martingamer5591 Oh, the study was sitting in ice water for half an hour? No wonder it had a slight effect on gains. Most people sit 2-5 minutes. Half an hour is kind of insane. People generally don't do that unless they're Wim Hof.

If you look at the paper, none of studies were actually using *ice* baths. All of them mention 10-15 degrees celsius (meaning probably similar temperature to a cold shower). That said, it is specifically talking about immersion/baths, not showers, and all of these did this very shortly after the workout rather than a good night's sleep later. I would say this study is not that helpful in making a decision for or against cold showers the next morning. If a cold shower in the morning makes you feel good, keep doing it.

This is funny, when I was younger I never wanted to cold outside when I was pumped for fear of losing the pump. This kind of sort of supports my hypotheses....

Cold shower near workout times is dumb, for the exact reasons in the video. But this is true of thermic training in general (extreme heat or cold). It's basically like doing rather intense cardio. Best way I've integrated thermic training (cold shower / sauna) with my morning cardio, then resistance train in the afternoon with a normal hot shower.

Totally counterintuitive from the beginning to me. I pointed it out to a senior trainer at my gym and he agreed it was a bad idea. Why would a noted scientist and a popular expert on everything whose name sounds like a hair growth product endorse such nonsense? Thanks for putting this out.

So ice bath immersion is not bad for normal gymers, and it boosts my energy like a lot after taking it. Why don't you take it? I think hot water should only be taken before bedtime.
