Are JumpStart gas stations running a scam by sneaking Ethanol into your gas?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Something seemed fishy when a new gas station popped up selling premium gasoline cheaper than regular unleaded. Turns out there was more to the story.
*NOTE: This is a study from 3 guys at the University of Nebraska stating that using E30 in non flex fuel vehicles resulted in relatively equal performance and cost per mile without a decrease in reliability. I would note though that this study was conducted over the course of 1 year and 193 drive cycles which is probably not sufficient to investigate claims that the corrosive nature of ETOH will cause malfunctions in non- FlexFuel vehicles over time.

Thanks for talking about this. I've been wondering for a while about this. I have filled up a few times and now just noticed that sticker myself. I agree it seems a little shady and I surely don't appreciate them taking advantage of my ignorance. I did some research before finding your video and found that as it states for most vehicles past 2001, it is okay to use up to 15% ethanol blend without it affecting the engine. This means 87, 85, 83 octane are the nationally recommended fuel blends for the average consumer. Higher octane levels can cause timing issues, ignition misfires, and engine knocking. If you do happen to use a higher ethanol gas in a vehicle that is not designed for it, you should be fine as long as you don't do it regularly. You can expect decreased mileage as ethanol doesn't perform as well as regular gasoline. Ethanol is so attracted to water that it is impossible to remove it all through processing. This can lead to slight evaporation and not only provide less fuel mileage but cause excess moisture to accrue inside your engine. Thank you again for the video, and I hope more people find this.

Thanks for watching! I’ve learned more since I made this and it seems likely that it’s ok to use higher ethanol contents in most modern cars, but I still say the labeling is shady. People should know what they are getting and when you ask what the deal is they shouldn’t say “We buy our gas local so it’s cheaper.”

I fill up at that station in Mulvane all the time. I figured the 93 contained a little more ethanol than the 87 but had no idea it was E30. Thanks for the info!

It is not a scam when the state approves the labels. I have used E30 Super Premium in my F150 (2.7) for just over 275,000 miles. In all our research, non-Flex vehicles responds better to the higher octane and I am guessing there are over 1000 retail stations across the Midwest with these Blender Pumps. Simple a better fuel because ethanol is just added. Unlike when we moved to E10 and we let the oil refineries downgrade the gasoline.

This is common with ethanol blend pumps that serve e85. Ethanol has superb knock resistance so it makes it easy to bump octane up. I love jumpstart! Their flex fuel tested at a consistent 80%+ all of last year and there's at least one pump in town where e98 is readily available to mix if necessary. This is important for my track car which has an e85 tune but no flex fuel/ethanol sensor. Cheap race gas! High ethanol blends should be just fine for most modern cars so long as you aren't letting the car sit for a super long time and you stick to the shorter end of your recommended oil change interval (it washes the cylinder walls and can dilute the oil a bit). It's very common for regular 91 to be a 10% ethanol blend even at normal pumps so modern cars generally have ethanol safe components. Ethanol is less energy dense so you will see your gas mileage suffer when using it, but I'm not too worried about that on the track. 🙂

Exactly! Very well said! I’m very glad we have it as an option, and glad to see them succeeding, but I think they ought to make it more clear to the buyer especially if they themselves are saying you can’t use e20 and e30 in non flex fuel vehicles. There are some kits that add e85 capability to the C7, GM was even working on a kit and ran it at the Nurburgring. It’s tempting.

My 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan really likes the Jumpstart E85. Agree their Mid-Grade and Super Premium are a bit misleading, but when you know you know and if you have a flex-fuel vehicle the why not do the E85 at a substantial cost savings.

Cool! Is Jumpstart owned by the ethanol plant out in Colwich? I noticed the sign had changed at the Colwich gas station a a while back. GM was developing an e85 kit for the 2014-2019 Corvette, even got as far as testing it at the Nurburgring and on the Autobahn but they killed it before release for an unknown reason. You can still get aftermarket kits to do the same thing, but I haven’t done it yet. The cost savings seems like a tough math problem. I’ve heard some people say e85 doesn’t hurt the milage much and I read another account where it took a Tahoe from 18mpg down to 13mpg. As cheap as it is, I think you still come out ahead even with a 25% loss in mpg. What have you noticed with the Caravan? If all else is equal, it sure would be nice to see more of those fuel dollars headed local instead of overseas. I’m glad to have the option of buying gas there, my only request would be that they either drop the warning about the e20 and e30 and pay for anyone’s car it ruins, or post the warning where everyone can see it.

@@RecordsRebuilds I believe it is wichita based. Would be interesting to talk with someone from corporate about it. I see people use it all the time but havent heard much feedback. Ethanol is definitely cleaner. Too bad there wasnt any mandate long ago to convert more vehicles to ethanol or e85. And being e85 doesnt mean you must run e85 you can run either.

Not just metal corrosion from the miscibility of water in ethanol, right Luke? There is also a potential issue with ethanol and the plastic and rubber components in the fueling system?

Yep, definitely shady. I don't go there for that reason. In fact, there was an article published at the Yale School of the Environment that was pretty harsh against ethanol in fuel. Look up "The Case Against More Ethanol: It’s Simply Bad for Environment."
