Are 3rd Gen Dodge Cummins Reliable?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Is the 3rd gen 24v Dodge Cummins Diesel a reliable truck? I have had to put some money into this truck right out of the gates, but so far all the issues that needed to be resurrected have been pretty minor. Although... only time will tell.

    You either pay to keep a car running or you over pay grossly on a monthly car note. I think you made a good choice with your truck bud.

    White smoke is unburned fuel blue smoke is usually oil alot of times diesels will smoke on a cold start until they warm up no big deal .

    I've had my 2005 since 2007 and 95k miles (only has 143k on it now) and it's been absolutely reliable. I did have one case of a cracked injector tube that stranded me, but it was an easy fix. I've since replaced all six. I also just replaced the injectors last summer. Only other repairs have been some sort of fuel pressure thing and something else, both supposedly common items around 100k and neither was expensive. Of course I did my clutch years ago because it smoked as soon as I turned up the power. But the new one has been going strong with a 400+ hp setup since then, and I tow heavy almost all the time. Now, suspension is another story. I've rebuilt the front end twice, and it wouldn't surprise me if it's almost due again. What I want to do fairly soon is a new rebuilt head with o-rings and head studs and a cam, to prepare for compound turbos. I'm tired of having to always back off on hills due to high EGTs (when towing heavy).

    Same I had an injector connector tube leaked fuel in the oil belly as it was #6 injector right at the back and thank god I noticed it so I swapped every injector and connector tube changed the oil and she’s perfect doesn’t smoke a bit and doesn’t have blow by and mine has 283k

    I got an 05 with 220k 4 years ago, right now it has 270k and it's been reliable, except I had to rebuild the transmission and had to replace the fuel pump. I don't know if the injectors have been replaced, on the carfax it only showed all the maintenance done but it's still running strong no white smoke or any blowby at all.

    Don’t think you’re burning oil bud. Should just be condensation from sitting, every one of my diesels do it only in the morning or whenever I start it up for the first time of the day. Nothing to worry about brother, can’t go wrong with a Cummins👍🏼

    I wouldn't worry too much about a little smoke on startup. I don't have the Cummins engine but a little seepage at valve-guide seals isn't a big deal. That engine is excellent.

    I keep hearing diesel is about to get crazy expensive and Blue Def is going to be impossible to find. I also saw a YT vid from a diesel truck dealer who said people put a million miles on diesel trucks and then change out the interior with new parts and sell them to unsuspecting buyers. He was using Fords as an example.

    It depends what block you have, wether the walking pin backs out, or the Bosch fuel injector takes a shit. These trucks can leave you by the side of road for a variety of reasons. The 5.9 Cummins is legendary but I'll stick with the 5.7 Chevy CKs.

  • @CaptainGnarkill

    @CaptainGnarkill

    The dowel pin thing and the 53 block deal are second gen problems I believe. I can't argue with you about Chevys, I love Duramax too.

  • @jonesfarm1836

    @jonesfarm1836

    Жыл бұрын

    The killer dowel pin was mostly a 12 valve Cummins problem, 53 block and VP44 injection pump was a early 24 valve Cummins problem. The 3rd gen common rail Cummins are pretty reliable, CP3 injection pump is “bullet proof” may have to replace injectors every couple hundred thousands, a sensor on the back of CP3 pump can give problems and #4 injector line can crack. Other than typical straight front axle/suspension issues and couple oil leaks here and there they pretty good starts every time truck
