Arai Tour-X5 review: 1,000 mile road test
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Full, honest and in-depth review of the Arai Tour-X5 (also known as the Arai XD5), which is the benchmark adventure helmet.
In testing on a BMW R1250GS, Honda Transalp and a Honda VFR800, I found it to be an excellent helmet, with the vastly improved visor mechanism, higher provable protection and excellent versatility thanks to it being four helmets in one making it worth the extra money over the outgoing Arai Tour-X4 (or XD4). Honestly, I'd say it's worth holding out and getting the new model...

Why do they not have a transition visor like the Klim Pro? Is that also a policy of safety?
The statement that they will never forsake their beliefs for the sake of sales is the only reason you need to buy an Arai, yes they are pricey, but they also back it up with the highest quality on exterior and interior, and lets be real, that price, over the span of 3-5 years is nothing compared to what you get. So thanks Mr. Arai for everything you done for the safety of your users.

22:50 - Arai helmets are not the safest just because they say they are. That statement alone is just marketing. Arai are known to be good for much more reason than just that statement, but if you make your buying decisions based "only" (your word) on a statement, you're a fool.

This helmet lacks the usual exterior quality tho. The rear extraction vents are roughly cut out, I never saw another helmet’s vent (even in 50$ cheapos) so badly refined. What the fuck were they thinking.

I’ve owned many helmets, mostly for track riding, but always have an Arai full face and an Arai XD-4 around, and those are the ones I actually wear out. My poor XD-4 is well used, awaiting the long-anticipated release of the XD-5. Just as this reviewer noted, I had slight discomfort and a red line on the first day’s ride with my latest Corsair, but, after that, it has fit perfectly. I’ve also crashed (not heavily, but enough to grind the face shield and front vent system) with no failure and no injury. I think these helmets are worth every penny, and am glad Arai sticks to their design philosophy.
As a Tour X4 owner, I'm just glad i watched this till the end! Thank you so much for a great insight and the amazing work on the detail and specs! Upgarading seems justifiable now :)
Brilliant review. I’m definitely going to try on a new X5.
Very detailed and unbiased assessment. Covered all aspects of design and build to give prospective buyers a good gauge in whether to peruse the helmet further. Thank you

I just bought the X4 for from a certain motorcycle apparel store in Guildford.... They're clearing out their old X4s, picked a graphics option up for £360, so I'm very happy with it. The new X5 looks amazing! Looks like some great improvements, especially with visor and pinlock. Great video as usual John, maintaining high standards isn't easy, so well done.

This. I do not believe the X5 is that much better to pay extra 400 gbp for it. Yes, it has some great features, I especially like increased safety, the quick visor release and prep for intercom but I would struggle to pay almost 2x of what the X4 price is currently. Curious how the plastic screws will hold up and will wait for a promo on x5 in the future.

I have ridden many hours on all kind of motocycles, sold helmets some time ago to make a living and just come back to buy ARAI MX-5 lately. Sorely a lot other ARAI models don't fit. I will try the Tour-X5. Thank you!
Looking forward to the XD5 when it comes to the states. As a former XD4 owner it looks like a lot of great improvements, love the new visor detach system. These days i have a Shoei Hornet X2 which i feel is better in the wind than the XD4 was, but if Arai has made strides in that area with the peak i would go back to one for sure for the ventilation since im a lot more off road focused now.
Great review thanks mate. Spewin, in the market for a new adventure helmet. Always wanted an Ari XD, but still no drop down sunshield...... Come on Arai! How do you find wearing glasses in it?
Excellent review...I'm looking forward to the new Tour X5. My ancient Arai Tour X 3 is 12 years old so well overdue for replacement! But I've had it inspected, changed the liner and always wear a buff to stop sweat etc degrading the helmet. I just wish there were some irridium or coloured visors for the Tour X. Cheers, Steve
Aw man, this was such a good review, complete with comments from Arai’s founder. Would love to see more of that. Awesome. I started with Shoei, then got an Arai and never looked back. I have a street, track, and ADV helmets which i replace every 4 years, so I buy a lot of helmets, and all of them are white Arai for the safety Arai provides and the visibility white adds when riding. Very tempted by that red, white, and blue XD-5 though, but my XD-4 is only 2 years old .

My ARAI EC-XD4 is a fantastic helmet, the finish is outstanding, i can't find a fault in it anywhere. i would buy another ARAI in a heartbeat.
Excellent comprehensive review, thanks for the notes on the visor length/usability and vibes - a big benefit and downside of the XD4's unique design. I may need to grab one of these.
Thanks for the tip on wheel weights. I own an XD4 and wear it on my Ducati MSV4S. The bass noise bothers me so I will try your solution.
adore my Tour x4, and as an Emergency medicine doctor i kind of agree re sunvisor principle. Tour x5 next for me 100%.
I've owned the X4 and on my second one, I will get this new one when they come to Australia and I am glad it doesn't have a drop down visor. I admire Arai for keeping to there moto and safety standards, and believe me we have a lot of sun down here! good review though.
Lovely looking helmet colours and graphics are beautiful 😊.
Only owned Shoei, Agv, Shark and HJC. I do like the look of the Arai Tour X-5 helmet, definitely considering it to be my next helmet. Japan is a wonderful place, i visited the country back in 2018 I am looking forward to visiting again in the near future.
Arai are my helmet of choice. I was waiting on stock replenishment for an RX-7V evo, but thinking this could be my next lid instead.
I've never owned an Arai or even tried one on. I love my Klim Krios Pro so curious how they compare? I do not like the magnet connector on the Krios at all though, always had D Rings.
Arai Signet-Q saved my life back in 2019 in a violent crash I have had. First head/helmet impact was with the asphalt road when I've lost conscious afterwards there had to be many more, one of bigger ones witha tree near the road. There were pieces of wood stuck around the "hinge" a place where a visor is fixed to the helmet. Although that part is underneath a plastic cover. It took me 7months to start slowly walking again. Do not cheap out on your gear, especially not on a crucial pieces like helmet, boots,.. Ride safe everyone.

I think the x5 for me, i've been using x4 for years and happy about it except wind noise and a bit wind leaking. i hate the dropdown sun shield, just no need for that, tile your head down it is enough to block the sun.
Great review, but I love a drop down visor
Why isn’t there a transitions visor for arai?
I had horrific water leaking on the visor of my TX4 (with pin-lock fitted) .... tried everything I could think of to no avail. Even the local importer tried to 'fix' it, also to no avail. This has permanently dissuaded me from purchasing the TX5 (or any Arai product), and I went with the Shoei Neotec 2 instead (modular). Never been happier!

Why doesn't arai make a photochormic shield for the XD-5? That's the one thing that's keeping me from getting one of these.
Is the tour x-5 out in Europe now? I know they’ve been presented for the Japanese market but not a word about when it will come out in the west. EDIT: And there's third reason for the peak, as adventure helmets more often becomes covered in dust the peak keeps the sun from lighting the dust on the face shield which makes it harder to see through.

Just recently saw this (and that the 5 was released) I’ve had an XD4 until recently when it was stolen. It’s the first helmet I’ve owned that just “fit” perfectly. I put thousands of miles on it on my DR650 and even my softtail when I took the peak off. It was stolen from my garage along with a bunch of other stuff so I was in the market again for another. Ended up trying an xp9 bell helmet. Definitely cheaper, much louder. Wanted to wait until the 5 was on the shelves in stores so I could try it. The bell is a budget helmet and I guess I was spoiled. Wish they had MIPS but comfort alone was almost better alone.
I thought I saw a video of this helmet at the manufacturers release, and it had a flip down visor .

I ride a 2019 1260 Enduro and wearing the X4 I can find the so called sweet spot that basically, at the right angle I can take all the weight off and reduce the noise
Please correct me if I am wrong, but aren't Arai testing methods more stringent than other tests? Have they not discarded helmets that have passed ECE and Snell but discarded them because they did not meet their own standards? If this is true, then shouldn't the name, "Arai", be sufficient enough if buying a helmet based upon safety ratings?
I'd love to see a review of someone using one of these with a naked bike. I'm really tempted to get one (mainly to shield from bright low sunshine) but dont want to spend such a lot of money if it's just too noisy on a bike without a screen.

@bennettsbikesocial

I agree in principle, but Arai's argument is that the first lids they made were open-face. Also, that they would only make a modular lid the chin bar would sheer off safely when ridden in open if crashed, but also be as protective as a full-face when ridden in closed.

An internal sun visor has always been a must-have feature on my helmets because I don't like wearing sunglasses or having to carry a clear and dark shield. I need an internal tinted visor, sorry Arai these days most helmets have them. For the top level price it should be included.

Did you watch Michio's explanation of why Arai won't do it, even though he knows the company lost sales?

@@MaverickAus what a weird, sad little comment that was. Won't even listen to the explanation as to why it's not necessary. Guarantee you voted brexit/tory.

In his defense, I can’t imagine anyone that has come to harm during an accident has been injured as a direct result of the internal sun visor. If anything……I’d lay money that more people have had an accident in the first place due to being blinded in low sun glare!

I had a crash where the EPS has broken in the same shape as the void for the sun visor and shifted forwards jamming the sun visor down
Realistically the Arai man is just holding back the company at this point. That helmet looks worse than the XD4 and already looks old. The peak looks like an afterthought and it's 1750g. And for that price? Honestly this helmet will just never sell with the current competition. I really don't get the cult around Arai, unless maybe for racing use.
Ummmm, the new visor looks like a cheap gazebo.....
Worth that extreme price for what exactly? The lack of a sun-visor? The handwork that doesn't translate to a tangible benefit? The bulky weight compared to a krios pro and the other adv lids? The lack of a transition visor? All nice that you went to Japan, but they're out of touch with the market with this price. I don't find this review as unbiased as some of your other reviews.

Fully agree with your opinion on Arai. It seems like they are living in their own world. I just can't see how the 1.000€ price point is justified.
All that money and no sun visor, joke to make out its for touring
Is this just an advertisement for arai

No. Is this just a comment from a troll?
That peak gap is hideous
I dont underdtand Arai, they think its safer to not have a sun visor and be blinded by the sun than have a slightly weaker helemet where you can actually see whats going on infront of you.

Just stick a dark visor on if you are sensitive

@@MartinChafer If you commute early morning/evening where I live in Scotland it's not ideal to do that as it gets dark very quickly and in the winter the sun sits very low in the sky. Its easy to flip up and down the sun visor when it's required for the best view ahead when entering/exiting shaded areas.

Buy the small add on mini shield. Have it on my signet and it works great.
It's to expensive

lol heavy as fuck. i've tried them all. if a Krios fit my head i would have gone for it. now i am very happy with a suomy. very light. Dont believe these reviewers this arai helmet is way too heavy. anything over 1500 grams is ridiculous, cause neck injuries. edit: i will say its a damn shame cause arai has the highest build quality in any helmet.
