Klim Krios Pro | Brutally Honest Review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

For $700 you better darn well get a great helmet. So what stands out about this dual sport adventure helmet flagship, Klim Krios Pro? Why did I buy it, how is it working, and is it a good value? What about compared to Shoei Hornet X2 and Arai XD-4?

I use this helmet with the transition shield and visor. Yes you do get some sun stripes across the shield but it is not distracting to me, and goes away as your position relative to the sun changes. I LOVE the transition shield and is a huge reason to get this helmet. I also have the Pinlock installed. I mistakenly used alcohol wipes for a few weeks on this shield and luckily I did not damage the lens despite the manual saying not to use alcohol wipes. You will however ruin your $40 pinlock anti-fog lens with the alcohol wipes. Pinlocks are very sensitive to anything you wipe on it. Great helmet, I'm happy I bought it, but it is a little noisy, I wear ear plugs.

Hope I never need to find just how good it protects my head , next on my list is a neck brace as any helmet can break your neck if you land wrong . Don't land wrong is not enough protection . Been riding this helmet for a year now. Probably have 150+ hours on it, cross country and on trails with my VStrom 1000, temps from 22°F to 105°F. Not the cheapest helmet. Not the quietest helmet. Not the easiest to adjust the face shield seal. But if you throw the visor on, the transitions lens, the pinlock lens, and figure out how to adjust the face shield so it closes tight, you'll have a helmet that seems to "just work" in any role, at any temperature, in any weather. The low weight is an amazing thing. The ventilation is extremely good. The magnet fidlock clasp works very well. It won't clip into place if you have a large beard, but you can remove it with gloves. It takes glasses very well. Only thing it needs is earplugs on a long ride, but I'd run them on any helmet. I have also used bluetooth earbuds under these but I opt for decent plugs now. I haven't tried any kind of bluetooth headset with the helmet. I haven't tried any goggles with it.

I've been very happy with my Klim Krios Pro, have had it for several years now. I don't use the transitions lens, as you pointed out, Klim doesn't recommend it with the peak and I also wear sun glasses all the time as I like to ride with the shield up. The weight of the helmet is a game changer, it's immediately noticeable. Build construction is quite good, I don't have any degradation of the inner foam, etc. Noise is on par with the Arai XD4 I had before. Runs true to size, I wear an XL in an Aria too. I'd buy another one if something happened to this one

I would highly recommend that you purchase the transitions lens. It's worth the money. The peak shadowing issue is a non-issue. The only time it happens is when you flip up the lens and leave the helmet in the sun. The lines will go away in about 60 seconds. I would highly recommend spending the $150 and doing a follow up review once you have used it. I run them both and it's a non-issue. I think they tell you not to do it so that reviewers won't flip out about it. As far as longevity goes I would guess that the average person would be able to expect about 12-18 months of riding before replacement. This carbon helmet is definitely pretty loud. I wish they would spray the inside with an acoustic damping material like Dynamat (assuming you can do it without smell issues). That said, I happily ride at 90 MPH on my Vstrom 1000 with it if I have some decent earplugs. I rode halfway across the country in this helmet. That said, I am keeping my eyes open for a dedicated touring helmet, but I haven't had a reason to pull the trigger yet, and the features that come with the Krios are nearly impossible to find in a touring lid. The 2XL has a problem where the top padding gets too thin and the foam in the peak will dig into the top of your head. You can grab an XL foam kit and replace just the top foam, though. Since there are only two shell sizes you can buy a bunch of different foams to adjust fit. You can only buy the foam in black which is a bummer, but it reduces reflections with the pinlock so I prefer the black.

Chin straps are tested for strength and retention in the vertical plane, where magnets have strength. If force is exerted in the horizontal plan, they have little retention strength. It doesn't matter how light a helmet is if it isn't able to protect your head.

Here's the deal breakers for me: 1. Audio system cutouts so not fit all audio systems. Just a total lack of thought there. 2. Complaints about durability. No way I'm spending $700 if the helmet will be worn out within 2 years. Not an issue with XD4. 3. Not a great value for $700, mentioned earlier.

I am very happy with my Krios Pro - for the reasons you state, light weight, airy, good vision, the fidlock, transition shield and general comfort. My only small criticism is the positioning of the pinlock insert. When fitted, the insert is slightly low in the shield and the top edge of the insert tends to be in my eyeline. Not a big deal but definitely an opportunity for improvement.

Only just seen this video, so sorry for posting so late. I absolutely agree that weight matters. And it doesn't just matter for your comfort, it also matters in the most fundamental way; in crash protection which is, after all, the reason you wear a helmet in the first place. That is because the force of an accident is a result of mass x velocity. More mass (weight) = more danger. I don't think I've ever owned a lid that weighed more than 1450g, and I have no intention of starting now.

Have used the Klim Krios (non pro) (2017) version of the Helmet for three long tours across Australia. An awesome helmet in many respects, however for wet weather riding I found that it presented problems with visibility due to fogging up (even with the pinlock installed)....I found the coverage of the pinlock on such a wide visor was insufficient and fogging occurred about the perimeter of the screen....this was quite annoying. One other criticism on the non pro version was that the sun shield would vibrate at highway speeds. Having not tried the Pro version I would hope that these short comings of the helmet I have from Klim has been ironed out in the Pro. Just purchased the Aria XD 4, so will see how that performs on my next adventure.

My 2 cents on the Krios : I wanted to replace my old Nexx XD1 helmet by the Krios Pro. So I got the Krios, tested it for a while. The Krios : > seemed less sturdy/solid > felt of lower build quality overall > felt a tad lighter, but it was barely noticeable to be honest > did not ventilate significally better than the XD1 > faceshield adjustment felt clonky So I also bought the Nexx XD1's successor, the XWED2, for comparison and tested it for a while too. The XWED2 : > despite weighting 200gr more than the Krios, it has never been an issue even on long (1,000 km +) trips > was half the Krios' price at the time > has more features > is a bit less noisy, but not by much > has a more comfortable fit (at least for me) > features a double-D metal strap > notched faceshield with 4 positions So in my opinion the Krios is a great helmet, but there are only four features that really make it shine : > the improved protection provided by the Koroyd technology > its lightness > the transition faceshield > the quick-strap ... but to me, these don't justify the steep price increase over other very capable helmets, like the Nexx XWED2. I sent the Krios back and kept the XWED 2 and ~ 2 years of use, I don't regret my choice at all.

Ventilation is directly related to the quietness. You can't have both good. Biggest problem is that Krios line helmet is rebrand of cheap Nishua Carbon with some changes and thus only comes with 2 schell sizes! My head is between M and L, so in M i get same schell size as S and it makes my head hurt(presses on forehead) and on L i get too large shell(up to XXXL, and that will eventually gets too loose and doesnt fit right from the start

I like the Klim Krios Pro, but not as much as my Arai XD4. I found the Klim to be more noisy than the XD4, especially at highway speeds. I also didn't like the visor - because it has curvature from top-to-bottom, it seemed to distort my field of view a bit more than the XD4, which is flat top-to-bottom. Also, I found the padding on this helmet, especially at the apex, to be non-existent (like, there isn't any at all!). This meant that it created a hotspot right on the top of my head. Conversely, the XD4 fitted me perfectly and without any hotspots whatsoever. I did not find the ventilation any better or any worse than the Arai - both were bordering on excellent! While the Arai XD4 is slightly more weighty, for me comfort is everything so I decided to stick with the Arai.

I just purchased the Krios Pro and after one ride at highway speeds (two hour return trip) I found it incredibly loud even though I was wearing earplugs, helmet was snug fit and chin curtain was in place with visor down. I like all it’s other features but I’m gobsmacked that more people don’t elaborate on the noise. My ears were ringing for days later and I still can’t hear properly. It’s been massively over hyped imo due to a few good features, I’ll be going back to Arai for sure, not going to risk loosing the rest of my hearing for the sake of fidlock and transition lens.

Sure, the light weight is great, and the magnetic buckle thing is cool, but the Arai XD4 still kicks Klim's butt... WAY more comfortable, Snell approved, better build quality, and MUCH quieter! Yeah, the KLIM is better than the Hornet DS, but until you've ridden in an XD4, you cannot say this (at the same price) is a better value... because it simply isn't. I have a friend with who wears the same size as I do and has a KLIM... despite the Krios' novelty features, we both agree the Arai is the better helmet... I wouldn't ride in anything else.

I wasn’t aware of it when I first purchased the helmet, but over the last 4,000 miles, I’ve noticed the right side of the visor doesn’t fit tight against the helmet, which causes air and noise seepage. I can push the outside of the visor tight against the helmet and it is noticeably quieter. My biggest complaint is Klim’s use of only two sizes of shells. A Large Arai XD-4 is noticeably smaller and seemed better balanced. When it comes time to buy a new helmet, it will be difficult to decide between the two.

I felt hot in this helmet on endurance parts - when it is slow and breath is intense, so I always need to lift up the visor for notch. It is not a panacea. On road it is great... not on paths. The darkening glass also does not respond fast to different brightness... when go to the forest from the sun, visibility is poor and risky - need to lift visor and eat the dust of your fellow rider in front. The peak is fragile...can break from casual hit on ground.

The Klim chin strap Fid system is not easy to latch up, especially if you adjust the strap to be tight, (The ads I have seen, with people strapping it on their head, had a very lose strap that we would not ride with.). If you don't figure it out, you may end up going back to D-rings, (which if designed well, are pretty easy when figured out.). I did figure out how to latch it up very fast with a tight strap, (almost as fast as unlatching it), by using my left hand only. Took me about a day to figure something out. Weird thing kinda. I have had the unlatched strap "latch up" when moving the helmet around like picking it up off the table.

The highly engineered closed cell foam in motorcycle helmets is good for 2 years, or maybe 3 before it becomes so hard that the energy absorption is essentially useless. You can't tell that unless you crash in it. So helmet prices have gone totally insane UNLESS they provide foam liner renewal services. All the decent helmets say in the fine print that the life expectancy is not over 3 years. And how long the helmet sat on the store shelves matters too. Buyer beware. No matter how fancy or expensive the helmet is, the same rules apply. Also, NEVER keep your gloves in the helmet. Any hydrocarbon fumes (like if you gas up with gloves on) are an early death to the foam. It will harden way faster if exposed to fuel vapors. I received this information from a seminar put on by Arai for our Ducati club. If this helmet doesn't use poly foam that is a potential game changer in the life expectancy of an expensive helmet. Very curious why no Snell. edit: NOPE, the manual states EPS foam. • Inner shell consisting of several parts, made of EPS (expanded polystyrene) with excellent shock absorption characteristics The manual states 5 years expected life, but EPS foam is EPS foam so I'm skeptical at over 3 personally.

@@LukePighetti he just said if you have the peak on don't use the transition lens, so pick one or the other. I ride in forestry areas with lots of foliage, it is good to be able to use a clear visor for maximum visibility in those darker areas and then when I hit the road I can use the drop down lens to keep the sun out of my eyes. I dont think the transition lens with the peak would be as affective in this situation. He also mentioned the transition lens scratches easily, and I ride my lightweight adventure bike in tight single track where there is lots of trees sticking out that can scratch the lens which is when I will use the peak to protect the lens but I cant defend against every bush, my dirt helmet goggles get scratched and so does my dual sports helmets clear visor, but with a transition lens scratching will affect the performance of the lens's ability to prevent glare from the sun which is another reason a clear visor and drop down visor would be better for my application.

@@chickentube2229 I have run this helmet for 2 years now and the transition lens is totally usable with the peak. The reason they say to not use them together it because if you lift the lens and store the helmet in the sun (like going into a store) the shadow from the peak will be printed into the photosensitive transitions lens. However, this goes away within about 45 seconds and in use it's not an issue. I don't ride through brush with mine so I cannot comment on scratches in that use case.

@@chickentube2229 You're correct. I can't truly comment on the Klim transitions but I wear prescription glasses with transition lenses that cost as much as this helmet and it's annoying when the lens gets shaded unevenly. It takes time to even out the shade on my glasses, which is easier than trying to do so for a shield/visor on a helmet while you're riding. I can see where normal riding without the peak the transition lens would be fine. It is usually my hat or driving in the cr with the sun coming in at an angle that boogers up the tint on my glasses, the peak would cause the same uneven shading.
