Shoei Neotec 3 review: ALL WEATHER road test

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

UPDATE: Shoei has just announced that there will soon be SRL 2 adaptor plate that will allow owners of the previous Neotec 2's comms to use it with the new Neotec 3!
The Shoei Neotec 3 on review here is one of the most important motorcycle helmet launches of the year as this flip-front lid has long been the benchmark for touring riders, not to mention couriers and the emergency services.
Bennetts BikeSocial has an enviable reputation for the most in-depth and honest reviews of motorcycle kit, and it’s very important to us that we maintain that. While I was fortunate enough to get hold of a full production version of the Neotec 3 four weeks before its release having signed a strict non-disclosure agreement, the test - as always - remains entirely independent and unbiased.
As we finally release this review, I’ve ridden around 700 miles in the Shoei Neotec 3 on a 2019 BMW R1250GS, a 2001 Honda VFR800 and a 1999 Kawasaki ZX-6R, to find out if the changes made are truly improvements…

I have used Shoei flip fronts since they came out now using Neotec 2 I find I get steaming up at low temperature with vents closed, to stop this I put 8 or 10 3mm holes in the chin skirt and this cures the problem without increasing the draught. These helmets are the best I have used thanks for a great review.

You do such excellent reviews. I've said it in previous comments, but I worked in riding gear retail for many years and these are exactly the kind of ideas I picked up over that time. Things like weight vs aerodynamics for example, the fitting advice, the noise levels vs fairings and earplugs, all good stuff. I also always offered to help install the pinlocks that came with helmets and instructed customers pretty much exactly the same way you do - many don't ever even realize the eccentric pinlock pins. Remembering that is also good, since if the insert loosens over time, the silicon seal between the insert and the main visor can start to leak. When it does, moist air will get between the layers, and then even the best ventilation won't get in and demist your vision. One thing I would add is that the pinlock insert is a very soft material, so I always recommended to never use coarse stuff like kitchen paper towels. In fact, because the insert is hydrophilic, it's practically impossible to wipe it dry anyway, so it's best to just dab it with a soft cloth and then air dry it. A Shoei replacement pinlock is about 40€, so keeping it scratchless saves a bit of money. I always felt the Neotec II was an excellent helmet! What I would have liked to see was Shoei looking into slight improvements to the chin bar closure. As it was it was already extremely good, but having fitted it to probably hundreds of heads, in *some* cases the chin bar might not fully lock on both sides. Most commonly this could happen with customers with quite wide faces, and/or if the customer was a little bit "timid" in closing the bar. The bar would be extremely reliable if either one used both hands to close it, supporting the helmet from behind while closing with the other hand, *or* if one was brisk enough with one hand, closing it in one quick motion that made the engagement of the latches positive. A hesitant motion with some people might leave the latch on one side unengaged. To be absolutely clear, the Neotec was no worse in this than any other helmet. Some other helmets I've seen even had enough flex in the chin bar as to allow either of the latches to entirely miss the tab on one side. It's just that I feel this is a really important part of modular helmets, so it should be as reliable as possible.

@@bennettsbikesocial Kind of the same thing I said about you folks, like "You make videos as if you'd make more money if customers would be safer and happier so they could ride more! Aha!" It's the same thing in retail. Sure, some might be after a quick buck, but honestly people get into biking for a long time if they're safe and enjoy it, and they will remember who served them well. My favourites were the customers who came in with absolutely destroyed helmets and gear, but still walking on their own feet. Had a tiny wisp of a young woman come in once. She was a semi-pro drag racer. Walked up and said "I crashed in a race last week. Bike is mangled, this helmet is absolutely wrecked, the ambulance crew had to cut off the leather suit you guys sold me. But all I have is this small bruise on my right knee. So I need another set for next race season. I think the neck brace is still fine."

Great review. Looks like they have addressed two of the three main issues I have with the Neotec 2. No ability to open the visor a crack, and the sunshield doesn't quite come down far enough. The other is fitment of a non Sena system and that looks about the same. From a marketing perspective I get it, but it is annoying that helmet manufacturers tie themselves to a brand rather than configuring helmets for communications more generically.

Regarding anti-fog for your specs, my optician recommended using Hoya Clear-it Anti-fog wipes. Contrary to what the name implies, it isn't a pack of wipes but a single cloth treated with something or other to stop glasses fogging. It costs about £5 or £6. The optician said it should last a few months, but I've been using mine for over a year and it's still doing it's job. I always clean my glasses first with a good cleaner, then breathe on the lens, give it a wipe with the Hoya cloth, treat each side of each lens. The treatment lasts the full day, and continues working the following day providing I've not had to clean the lens again.

Great review as always. Good to see that Shoei has addressed some of the shortcomings of the 2. The drop-down visor coverage was poor and I’ve found that I get a draft and therefore noise too just below my ear, hopefully new interior has cured that. One area that I think they have definitely missed is the pinlock coverage, still protects a lot less of the visor than some others, HJC are particularly good at this. My Neotec 2 also seems to hoover up bugs and invites them to tap dance on the top of my head. I’ve mod’d mine but a fly screen would have been good.

As a fellow Glasses wearer (with anti glare) and Neotec 2 owner, I use the muc-off anti mist product to clean my specs before going for a ride, but be careful to buff them well or they can smear. Using the same product on the inside of the visor also helps. There are a couple of old tricks from days prior to visor products... 1. Use a fine smear of dishwashing liquid on your specs and buff to remove smears, use the same on the inside of the visor. This works, but does not last long. 2. Use spray on furniture polish on the outside of the visor. This is outstanding at making water bead and clear from the visor. I think there is silicon in the polish that allows this to happen, but again, always buff well after application as it can cause smears and riding at night a bit twinkly with oncoming headlights.

I was dubious at first as it's £10 ish for a 32 ml bottle, but, having only bought 2 bottles in 3 years I can't complain. And my wife and kids use it. My specs generally need cleaning before it wears off, so no idea how long it would last for. Also I find the spray puts far too much on, you end up wiping loads of excess off, so now I just moisten a cloth and wipe on. Once applied leave a few mins then buff off any excess. Give it a try. I stopped riding for a period between 2018 and 2024 and was silly enough to leave my Neotec 2 in the shed in my very very hot home country. I actually gave it to my gardener when i gave him my NMAX but he diskt want it and so left it behind. When i asked him about it because i wanted to know the size he dug it out of the shed. The helmet was purchased in 2016 I think. By 2024 the entire interior lining had disintegrated, i mean a pile of dust and nothing more. I was going to buy a new liner and use it as a spare. This channel has educated me to just discard it. The styrofoam seems 100%, so does the outer layer. But seeming ok and being ok can be vastly different. For sorting out fogging of glasses, try the "The Body Doctor AB Mask Anti-Fog Cloth", found at Boots, Superdrug etc. I was struggling with fog, but each time I ride, give the lenses a wipe with this, and at least for the day I have no issues. Important to follow directions (mist the lens, and then wipe) for longer lasting effect. Thanks for the great content, ride safe.

I opened my Google news feed today and saw 3 articles in a single scroll on this lid today, obviously the NDA cleared today! I knew I was only going to check out the Johns review. Looks like a cracking helmet, I'm not arsed with the flip front, generally prefer a fixed chin guard but a lot of features I like are found in flip fronts, the GT Air 3 sounds very tempting. Sadly a bit of a stretch on my budget but we will see.

Thanks for this review. A few months ago i bought two neotec 2's plus intercoms for me and my wife after watching reviews etc, I'd rate them as ok apart from intercom is a bit annoying, keeps cutting out mid conversation telling me to 'say a command' and has to be reset..also they weren't cheap ..so imagine my joy at hearing that this helmet neo 3 is 'better in every way than the neotec 2' ..i think I'll leave reviews alone for a while and just go with what i fancy 😄

Another great review John. I actually had a Neotec 2 multi coloured so not cheap & liked it. But decided to go " cool " brought a Harley so brought an open faced. Two bad moves there and the Harley & helmet both got sold very quickly. Now back on a GS but being a cheap skate I recently brought a C4 Pro from cut price on line seller. Its proven to be another mistake as having only worn it a couple of times not feeling comfortable. Might mean a NT3 multicoloured Christmas present to myself then John. Ted

l bought the original Neotec, l found in it comfortable to wear. On the basis of being happy with it l invested in the Neotec 2. Also the intercom system that l thought was brilliant because its not 'sticking out' in the slipstream causing noise but fitting flush to the contour of the helmet.. the shell was narrower than the original even though it was the same size ...(Medium)...so that was a bonus feature. l always wear ear-plugs ...the Alpine variety, so wind noise is pretty well non-existent .... The Shoei Neotec is a premium product. The new 3 can only be more advanced, if only in minor ways...

If youve never tried a flip up helmet, they are fantastic. You can still do sporty riding,, very low windnoise, and the ability to full open at the lights for more air is just amazing. 2 Niggles with the Neotec 2, there is no city visor opening position, where it lets just a whistle of air through. And the fact that they have built it specifically for SENA units is a big downer.

Excellent review…considering the new EC safety standard-06 , the larger sun-visor , better Polsters to an already comfortable, plush interior, etc, an improvement over my Neotec2. I wonder if you can replace the neotec 2 sun-visor (too short) with the neotec 3 sun-visor? Probably not…if I were to buy a new helmet, I would definitely go for the extra money, since the neotec 3 has the latest safety standard. The Schubert is also a great helmet and depending on head shape usually one or the other will fit more comfortably.

This new Neotec3 looks like a worthy upgrade although my neotec still feels plush next to alot of other makes and models of helmet inc. my newish Xlite carbon flip up ( can be ridden with the chin piece up unlike the shoei) which is nice but not the quality of the Shoei. I left shoei for the hjc rpha 90s carbon because of weight. After a few hours, I couldn’t wait to get that shoei off. 4 plus lbs verses 3.3. We need to push shoei to offer a carbon model and pay attention to weight otherwise they will keep getting more heavy. The shoei is more plush but the hjc is totally comfortable, like a c3 pro feels.

I have a Sena 10S and it still works wonderfully all day long. Spending significantly more money to get a marginal (seems to me) upgrade makes no sense at the moment. In regards to your anti-fog quandry on your glasses with the anti-glare coating John - Revision Anti-Fog Wipes, i have been using them religiously since i started Airsoft (wearing face protection + ghillie suit + glasses) and suffer no fog anymore, but do note you can STILL get condensation build up in the right circumstances, although much less common of a thing on a motorcycle where you've got good airflow, as opposed to laying in a bush for half hour at a time. Simply clean your glasses, wipe them over with the wipe, outside and inside, and off you go! Re-apply after every clean, and you can re-use the wipes as many as 30 or so times before they become ineffective. Hope this helps.

I’m sure the Neotec 3 will be great. I own the RF-1400 and NeoTec II that I just bought a few months ago. I will be happy with both for the next 5 years or so. Just a side note: I do have a SENA 30K mount on both my Shoei helmets. It was a fairly easy install on the RF-1400 but a bitch to install on the NeoTec II. Why helmet manufacturers like Shoei can’t or won’t make some sort of universal mounting location that can accommodate legacy comm gear is beyond my pay-grade. Seems more like Shoei \ SENA collusion more than anything else.

Great review! Just what I was looking for:) I've had the Neotec II for years now and never really felt like it was worth the money. The spots of rain getting through, though rare, I find unacceptable for a €699 helmet IMO. The visor doesn't stay in my preferred position at highway speeds (simply closes itself unexpectedly). The visor tab being on one side, instead of centred, always annoyed me. And it's noisy. BUT I have always loved the fit and build quality.... It seems that some of my niggles have been addressed with this new one. Just not sure it's enough.

I will add my 2 cents. I bought a Neotech 2 a bit over a year ago. In my opinion it was a terrible helmet. I wasn't at the end of the block when it was apparent that it was a very noisy helmet, unacceptable in fact even with earplugs. The visor only had a latch on the left side so the right side didn't shut tight. I put my Nolan back on for the rest of the ride home. Very disappointed. I just got another Nolan to replace the tired old one. The Nolans are far better helmets for even less money. I thought I was moving up to a premium helmet with the Neotech, wasn't the case.

My girlfriend's Neotec 2 is a lot older than mine, and the Neotec 3 sounds like a great update overall, so it won't take much convincing for her to get one. We both live in New Zealand, so I'm guessing the Neotec 3 won't be available here until early 2024, and it'll be at a "sell your spare kidney" price point.
