Thank you! I just donated a bunch of these portable radios to my local volunteer fire department. They will be issuing these to their most active members. It just so happens that they have a Ham in the group. He asked for his to be “modified” to expand the radio to handle 220. This was a great starting point. Thank you!

LIFE SAVER! I followed this video guide which was embedded on a blog, and when I went back to using my 878 I was very disappointed that so many settings on the HT were disabled. I searched and searched for why those settings were gone, nothing. Figured it was just a part of "Maintenance Mode," but I really wanted GMRS capabilities so I was going to return the radio today. Happened to check the video again and found this god send of a comment. If I could give you money I would

Thanks for this. Worked on a brand new 878 II Plus just fine. Just to see about 1.25M power, I tried to hit a few repeaters in my area. Managed to key one up about 40 miles away using a little dicone antenna stuck to the metal roof with a mag mount. I'd say that's pretty good. I guess an actual signal report would be more useful but it seems useable on 1.25 to me.

Ok, it does "work" on the Btech DMR 6x2, but the software reads the radio as a DX62UV and only gives you options for modes 1-13. There is no mode 14 with bigger frequency range or an extra band. All other modes, other then the default mode 1 are actually more restrictive. I guess you could edit the configuration file and increase the band width, but I'm not sure that would work.

  • @n1kkri

The problem is AT-Option changes the BAND of the radio. This band change now becomes part of the codeplug (which could be edited with a hex editor) When you try and load the old codeplug in the radio will look at a hex location and see the wrong hex and reject it when programing that old codeplug into the radio. That's why he did an export then later import which gets around the codeplug band setting. If you didn't do the export or if someone sent you a codeplug to try you would have to HEX edit a specific location and change the Band of the codeplug to what you just converted the radio to and it will load right in.

This does work but I did it slightly differently. After using AT Options I edited my original codeplug to make it compatible with BAND 14. This allowed me to install the original codeplug back into the radio. I did this over a year ago. You would also have to do this if someone sends you a codeplug or you download someones codeplug that was not configured for your now band 14 modified radio. If you google AT-Options the site explains all this. Has anyone actually measured the power output? I would be somewhat concerned the stock antenna might not offer a good SWR on 222MHz.

FOR ANYONE LOOKING TO USE THIS OPTION TO USE A CODEPLUG THAT WAS ASSEMBLED IN DIFFERENT FREQUENCY RANGE AND USING D878UVII PLUS, HERE IS MY DISCOVERY: As far as I can tell, at this time, with Mode 14, it seems to revert to the D878UVII characterestics wherein bluetooth and APRS transmit still function but APRS Recieve doesn't. This isn't permanent, as switching back to Mode 7 (US Amateur Band Mode) will restore APRS Recieve capabilities. So for someone in my particular situation (needing to be able to access a regional dmr network [PNW DMR in my case] which is outside the frequency bandwidth that stock 878 permits) the kind of lengthy work around to utilize a long codeplug set to Mode 14 and utilize the APRS recieve here was my solution: 1) Use AT options to convert radio to Mode 14 (this is at your risk and will be temporary, I advise you backup settings as shown in video) 2) Go to the CPS and set to Mode 14 as shown in video. 3) You can choose to edit your settings at this time or later, but many options must be set in CPS. Save and Write to Radio at this time. 4) Obtain RT Systems software for Anytone D878UVII (Stock cable with Radio works). I know another cost, but this is the only work around I can find, since CPS doesn't allow you to change modes without wiping all data on active Window. What we are looking to do is change the current codeplug's state from Mode 14 to Mode 7 so it can be written to the radio without retyping an entire codeplug; and if the old adage time is money is true then this is the way to do it I suppose. And RT Systems does have other benefits as mentioned shortly. 5) Load RT Systems and Read Radio 6) Check the AT Options Band list for Mode 7 to see TX and RX ranges. FIRST SAVE (This will be useful in case you need to revert to frequncy order if "sort", messes it up, it has a "undo sort", but could fail). Use The "sort" functionality to organize the codeplug you are trying to use by 1st time: Recieve Frequency and 2nd time Transmit Frequency. You can look at lowest and top values for both VHF and UHF and ensure that they are within the Mode 7's frequencies. Delete any frequencies outside range (Shouldn't be many, in my case of 1,200+ there were none). Create second, separate save (great if it works and you can undo sort, but have backup in case this messes up). Then load a New Window...you can minimize software for now. 7) If you haven't already backed up settings from Radio on the CPS as shown in OP's video, do so now. 8) Use AT options to change back to Mode 7 on Radio (This will again, reset radio) 9) Go to the new window you opened in RT Systems and select read from radio, this should now have all active tabs of RT Systems setup for Mode 7 operation of radio (you can think of this like changing the mode between Amateur and Maintenance in CPS, but that only lets you change it for the current window, while RT Systems, does it for all active windows; perhaps a con if you only want to affect one window and not the others that are open; but, really useful for what we are looking to do), no further action required on this tab. Return to tab with original Mode 14 read from radio with your frequencies, groups, etc, this should now be Mode 7. 10) I advise saving this tab as new save at this point. The RT system will be useful to you if you want to organize the codeplug you received as it is nearly uncomparably better to the CPS for mass editing and organizing. Now write to radio (be mindful that nearly all settings to the radio will likely be wiped at this point, but you will have the frequencies and groups mostly intact). 11) Go to CPS, open new window and read from radio. This codeplug will now be Mode 7 and your radio can use APRS Rx again! At this point you will want to follow the steps in the video to import your setting backups from earlier and save. You should be able to make whatever adjustments you would like at this point and write back to Radio to have a "Final" Build. From this point forward you can use CPS for option settings and to manage digital contact list and RT Systems for Codeplug organizing/rebuilding (at least those are my use cases). Sorry for the lengthy post, but I couldn't really think of a simpler way to condense it. Now, if you want tri-band and digital and APRS then this radio, is not quite there yet. I could only recommend a Yaesu FT3DR or perhaps FT5DR as I know from personal experience that those HT's are able to run all three bands and retain digital and APRS TX and RX (At least with MARs mod, I am aware you get more Frequncies open to you, again, your own risk, your own decision). Best of luck to you all in your endeavours in the hobby, and '73!

One radio is having problems writing then too and the other is having issues TX but not RX on numerous channels. I am trying to do all the export work but haven't tried the at options yet. I have not tried this with the 878UVII Plus. I would assume that it would work. It is essentially the same radio with an upgraded Bluetooth module in it. The Bluetooth module has the memory and the gps hardware on it I believe. If I can find the Bluetooth module, I am just going to upgrade one of the 878’s that I already have.

I had the 878s which was only single band (400 - 480Mhz). I could not open the frequency's trying the procedure in the video. I returned it and got a refurbished 878 UV ll listed at 400 - 480Mhz and 136 - 174Mhz. It came with firmware version 3.02n. Following the instructions in this video I was able to open the radio to Mode 14 giving me up to 520Mhz. Even tho the A/T Options notes says it only works with firmware version 1.19 for the anytone 878 @@aspinajr

FWIW my 878 has been in mode 14 for about 4 years now, along with some hex edits. The transmit bandpass filters are not suited for 220MHz so if you were to hack it for higher power on that band it might end in tears. 220MHz is not a ham allocation here in the UK so not a terribly useful thing, though mine transmits on that band it does not appear to encode DMR correctly on it. The radio has been thrown in a box for about a year so it was surprising to find the battery was still showing full charge, had to remind myself how to do everything so it now has the hacked 1.27 firmware. Kudos to Jason Reilly for all of his work on these radios...73
