Anxiety In The Middle Of The Night | How To Stop Waking Up Anxious

Do you ever wake in the middle of the night, feeling anxious and unable to shut your mind down about those ongoing concerns and worries?
In this video I’m going to break down why we do this and give you some simple mind coaching tips for getting back to sleep when it happens and also for stopping it happening altogether. #anxiety #mentalhealth #nightanxiety
One of the aspects of anxiety that can leave us feeling pretty helpless to its effects and very much out of control of our own responses is when we wake in the middle of the night feeling anxious about something.
I went through a phase in my life where I started to dread going to sleep because I was pretty certain at some point I would wake up with all of my worries feeling like immediate life threatening situations that I desperately needed to take action on now.
I started to view bedtime not as a time of rest, but as a time when I was vulnerable to my worst thoughts and feelings.
But there’s a reason why this happens.
Watch the video to find out more.

Yes this is so frustrating in the midlle of the night, it rushes you to go somewhere but you have nowhere to go to escape that awful feeling. Like the shoot of espresso is injected in blood stream.

Great video! I had this a few times. I’m able to quickly turn it down once I wake as I’ve exposed myself to it over and over. My emergency anxiety override system kicks in. Starts off with me internally saying “okay. This has happened many times before. You’re okay. Don’t worry or fight it. Breath very slowly and switch the light on. Distract yourself with a book or watch a video on KZread. Drink some water. Do not check your pulse. Your heart is doing what it’s supposed to do. Before you know it you’re tired and ready to sleep again. You must take deliberate action. Failing that the “anxiety” can spiral out of control.

I do recognize this, as I woke up twice with a panic attack last weekend on a city trip. The night and day before were extremely stressful due to some specific events. It made me feel like I wanted it to never happen again. It took me a few days to get my mental state sorted and get back to enjoying life as it had rattled me so much. But now I look back on it, those nightly occurances are never really about a pressing issue. Your videos helped a lot with the recovery process, and it is such a coincidence how you post this one just after me experiencing this. Thanks Tim!

Funny how we some things at just the right time. 😊 Too much stress can leave us struggling to relax and shut down properly (especially when we’re away from the perceived safety of our home environment). Glad the video was of benefit and thanks so much for commenting. 👍🏻

Hi Tim, my only threat is anxiety. Yes, I do wake up in the middle of the night, but I’m not worried. I hope this video doesn’t trigger me for something worse. My anxiety has really increased lately.

What if you don't know why you are waking up anxious? I wake up with my heart racing, hot and covered in sweat and it's virtually impossible to go back to sleep.

Jen, you really don't have to know why your heart is racing. We will often wake up with a spike in cortisol and adrenaline. Just remember, your heart racing is not anxiety. Your concern about it is the anxiety. Your heart speeding up and slowing down is just your body doing what it does. We don't need to know why each physical shift occurs and we don't need to monitor it. Accepting this will help you get back to sleep MUCH easier.

Hi, Patrick at Mind Life Flow here...isn't it interesting how so many people talk of their anxiety becoming worse in the night or if they wake in the night? Useful topic you are addressing. Many people speak of this difficulty in private practice - what do people find is helpful?

I suffer from chronic insomnia. What you say about not having distractions at night is so true bc that's when those thoughts creep in...Does this cause my heart to race? If so, would you call it a nighttime panic attack?

I feel like this happens bc of cortisol. It happens exactly 5 hours after I fall asleep . I’m trying to figure out how to reduce it. I do everything you’re supposed to do (healthy diet, exercise early in the day, no caffeine/ alcohol) yet it still keeps happening. So frustrating.

Hello sir, i had a minor surgery couple months back and after that surgery i think i am dealing with anxiety because i am always scared to a point where i think i am going to die . Is this a biological change because of all the medications or something else i an confused

Ok, I have no idea about the medications as I'm no doctor, but if you are concerned about the possibility of death then that is very likely the cause of the heightened anxiety. You might also be becoming overly concerned with how you feel as you monitor both your recovery and scan for any potential future threats. Remind yourself that you are safe and well and any fears for your safety are firmly in the past. It's very possible that once you stop focussing on your health the anxiety will subside. Hope these thoughts help.

I am 82 and have defecation problem. Can gut problem cause anxiety. I dream too much rather mine is dreadful sleep.. I have a problem. Near the end of every dream I wake up feeling cold which is very irritating. It is 4 years old problem. Doctors gave alp to avoid this situation of excessive dreaming. It worked to some extent. Now I have another problem that I am always feel sleepy during day so I left taking alp. Day time sleepiness is irresistible but when I wake up from this sleep I feel heavy head. Is it because of anxiety, gut problem or something else. Previously such situation was described by the doctors as sleep apnea where while awaking I had fast breathing with feeling of irritating coldness lasting for half an hour followed by hot hot flushes. That time my systolic pressure rose to 160 which slowly dropped to normal in that half an hour. Doctor treated me for hypertension and gradually increased the dosage but the state of affair continued. Then one doctor suggested it as sleep apnea. I started smelling Vicks Vapourub before sleeping. It worked to reduce waking bouts and fast breathing with palpitation.but coldness is still irritating me. I may mention here that it all started 6 years back when defecation problem started and a doctor suggested it as colon cancer. However j had no blood in stool, my weight remained constant. No pain in abdomen and the colon cancer test was negative. Now my BP is 120/70/60 on waking, fasting sugar is 104. Do you think in bouts of excessive morning sleepiness I should take alp again. What you may suggest in this situation. I will appreciate it

He can't tell you what to do with your medication Because he's not a Doctor. But yes.....going to the washroom and not going. An trigger anxiety issues. It also sounds like you need to sleep better somehow. I would go to a sleep clinic if you haven't been to one already.....ask to go to one. Lack of sleep also causes nervous issues like anxiety..
