How To Be Your Own Therapist and Overcome Anxiety

When we are struggling emotionally and mentally but don't want or can't afford professional help what other options are there? In this video I explain how to be your own therapist and create an environment in your own mind that is geared towards recovery and good mental health. #anxiety #mentalhealth #therapy
What with all the pressures we face these days and the lack of respite we get from our stressors it’s no wonder more and more people are reaching out for help from some form of therapist or coach.
However, getting professional help isn't always an option and, plus we might not feel ready for that step just yet.
So what can we do for ourselves right now to help us overcome feelings of fear, anxiety and overwhelm.
In this video I talk about how we might utilise a tried and tested therapeutic approach to help create an environment in our own mind for positive and meaningful change.

I am very introspective by nature, so I always have a habit of asking myself "WHY do I feel and think this way?" - I feel that this is a very valuable trait in a lot of ways, since it not only makes me more self-aware, but also more accepting of people and ideas that I am unfamiliar with, and this ensures that I don't judge things too quickly.

Thank-you for being so willing to share your expertise and help so many people who are feeling anxious under the current, pandemic conditions.

I've just watched your video on Tedx. It was really powerful and really struck a nerve with me as I felt like you were actually talking about me! I suffer with my anxiety and it's becoming a destructive part of my life. I'm just starting to try and understand and I suppose manage it as sometimes it gets so bad I just breakdown and don't know what to do.

Hi Mally. You're absolutely right. It is a journey and I'm so pleased to hear there's been improvement. What we often find is that in the same way concern about anxiety was a downward spiral, recovery sparks a similar effect but in the other direction! As we feel better we think a lot less about any anxious feelings and as a result are a lot less anxious. It's then we really get to realise that the thing we were most anxious about was how anxious we were. Once we fully understand this we have no reason to ever fear anxiety, and it stops being the monster we thought it was. You've got this. :)

Hi John. As strange as it sounds, it’s generally our concern about any physical symptoms that exacerbated them and turns them into troubling feelings rather than just ordinary everyday ones. Try not to treat them as the problem. Our body does a lot of strange stuff in the process of directing food, pumping blood etc and often we might feel less than 100% physically. The less concern we show these feelings the less intrusive and noticeable they become. Hope this helps. Tim.

The search for the right therapist can be a long one. I've seen many clients who tell me they've tried 'everyone and everything' to find the answer. In truth the right one is very probably out there (and after all..we only need to find one), but understanding how to create the right environment for improvement in ourself is a great place to start.

I recently saw your Ted talk about how to stop feeling anxious about being anxious and now got in touch with your KZread videos which have helped me a lot. but I still have Some trouble. whenever I feel anxious my first symptom is losing my appetite and stomach pain, it has happened to me that whenever something small triggers my anxiety I start feeling anxious about being anxious and not being able to eat calmly without having those intrusive thoughts, and it’s been a little bit difficult for me to overcome those feelings whenever I’m eating, is there any advice you have on these type of situations? I’d appreciate it very much if you’d respond.

Stomach issues are so common when we experience anxiety because our body is going into a mild state of fight or flight. When we are in a panic situation we stop feeling hungry because the efforts to sustain our existence are focussed on taking life saving action rather than fuelling our body for the future. The way we overcome this is to start to address the thoughts which are causing us to feel vulnerable and remind ourselves that in this day and age we probably aren't in any situations that demand instant action to save our life. The important stuff manifests now as long term concerns such as money, relationships, career etc. Do what you can to take your mind away from thoughts of things are out of your control, take one thing at a time when it comes to your daily activity. Do your best to stop using phrases like "my anxiety" or "I have anxiety" and refer to it more as "I feel anxious about...". This will have the effect of moving you towards solutions to your concerns and away from the false idea that there is something inherently wrong with you. Finally I would suggest calming yourself as much as you can with the knowledge that any stomach difficulties will cease once your body returns to a state of calm. Hope this helps.

Tim I request you to kindly respond to this---- Whenever I travel by bus or car I feel very anxious at the start before sitting in the vehicle for no reason. When the bus starts moving my anxiety shoots up and I feel congestion in my chest and nervousness and feel like i am going to die as the bus speeds up. I have suggested to myself that I am totally safe in such a situation but my mind does not listen to me. constantly i am trying to get rid of anxiety by suggesting to myself that it is unreal and fake and i am totally safe like other passengers. What is to be done for this? pls help me pls. I need help.

Hi. Whilst it can be tough to offer useful advice on specifics without knowing more, there is something about the situation that a part of your mind doesn’t like. I suspect this concern has now turned into an expectation of an high anxiety response (which in itself causes anxiety). This might be something where 1-2-1 work would be helpful. info@thecontrolsystem.co.uk

Sundjer, when it comes to OCD I’d always recommend seeing a professional for 1-2-1 assistance. Whilst most of our emotional and psychological challenges can be managed and dealt with ourselves there’s no shame in reaching out when things feel like we need a different perspective. A lot of the things I talk about in my videos are applicable to OCD and can certainly help us gain a greater deal of control but there are of course times when professional help will greatly enhance our own efforts and represents a vital part of our recovery.
