The brooches unsaid were fob are not fobs. The little round hook would have had a pin attached for extra safety for the brooch to be attached to clothing so as to not loose the brooch. You find that in brooches made with gold and precious metals. The 2 brooches u said were fob brooches were never fobs for watch chains, they were always brooches. Hope this helps. Also queen Victoria vacationed in Scotland in Balmoral castle, that is were the love of Victorian pebble jewellery was made popular as she wore this type of jewellery made from the semi precious stones found there! Cheers! Lovely pieces!

If the piece is sterling or of higher gold content 15 kt and above, the stone more than likely is either semi precious or precious.
Thanks for a good and informative video. The brooch at 17:39 might be a Swedish hallmarked brooch. I am from Sweden so I recognised the markings. If it is Z8 it is made the year 1950, if Z3 it is 1830. Claearly has the "kattfot" and the "S" for sedish hallmarked Silver. Nice if you could research this. Makers mark seems to be GK, and if 1950 (Z8) it is from Kaplan.

I have an old cameo brooch with the C clasp. It's a black one. What would the material of the cameo be carved from possibly?
@VintageVariety
2 жыл бұрын
Cameos can be carved out of many different materials; shell, lava rock, bog oak, jet, French jet(black glass),carnelian,….just to name a few. They can also be molded out of plastic. Celluloid ( one of the early plastics)for example was used in many old/ antique pieces.
I love broches

Me too 😊❤️❤️❤️
Thank you very much for sharing your collection. I’ve studied and collected Victorian & Scottish brooches in Scotland. I love them all, but my favorite in your collection is the pinchbeck knot with garnet stones. Shame your carnelian stone was cracked bc it’s a beautiful one too. At the 8m20s mark , you indicated that the ring on the bottom of the brooch was to attach to a pocket watch. However, we were taught that these rings at the bottom were generally used to attach safety chains to clothing to avoid loss. In fact, I have a similar knot brooch in pinchbeck (not lucky as you to have it in gold) with a safety chain still attached at the bottom ring. So, were these rings only used for watch fob only? Thank you again for your time.
@VintageVariety
3 жыл бұрын
I believe you are indeed correct and that it was most likely used for converting into a pendant. I think the ring at the bottom could have been used for both safety chains and/ or watches judging by information from one of my books. Thank you so much for commenting and sharing your knowledge with me❤️ excellent!

What is the piece with the two birds connected with a chain called? I inherited some very old brooches, but with them was a piece that that resembled the birds, but made with cut blue glass, under each end piece is a little clamp clasp. It's the same length as your bird piece, but I have no idea what it's for. It belonged to my great-great aunt, so it's very old. She lived from 1895-1987, so I'm not sure how old it is. I thought that you might have an idea what it is. Hope you can help, thanks.
