Mostly car show events where I take the GTR, some occasional drive along videos, and also planned on some work on this, plus picking up another vehicle to do stuff with (leaning towards a 3000gt or Mk3 Supra), but this COVID-19 pandemic has caused all my plans on this channel and my gameplay channel to be put on pause due to work and general lack of access to stuff. Stay tuned though, as I have every intention to kick it up once things are safer out there.

    Thanks for the kind words :) As for your question, assuming it is as stock as I show here, then it SHOULD be ready to go get the conversion work done. That being said, G&K (the company I mention in the video) will also give it a once over and let you know if anything is a potential suspect. That being said if you get that far (an imported machine that is as stock as possible) then you are most of the way there. Just always be ready for the unexpected expense, as these are 30 year old cars and you never know what might pop up.

    Hey man! Like others have mentioned, you’ve been a tremendous help for the folks out here in CA. I did however, just have a question or 2 that I’m hoping you can help answer. Please let me know. For context, I am looking to purchase a car that’s been imported already and being sold by a dealership of imported vehicles in AZ. It is a Honda and not modified but the dealership selling it is advising because of it being imported, there are likely things that need to be changed to get it to pass emissions. With that said, 1. Were you able to take your car to G&K to have it tested first and identify what it is that you needed to change? If so, is it required they do the upgrades? Did you have any trouble driving it to the location to get inspected? 2. To make sure I understand correctly, do you estimate an additional $1,500 extra to cover the necessary items to get it to pass emissions? Or do you anticipate it being double or more? Again, thank you so much for your help!

  • @MikesJDMGarage

    @MikesJDMGarage

    6 ай бұрын

    Hey hey, glad the videos have been of help. As for your questions: 1. I did not take my car to G&K for any sort of inspection prior to de-moding it and taking it there for the actual work. The reason is because I knew someone already who had gone thru all the work before so knew what the state would kick back on but also because the general rule is no mods. Specifically visual mods on the engine or the ECU. My ECU had a Mines Stamp on it so it was clearly modified, and various parts under the hood were obviously aftermarket. That being said, you could probably reach out G&K and set up an inspection for what they require. That is something I personally haven't heard about but I don't see why they couldn't do so, especially given how much they charge for their part. As for getting it to and from places to get it worked on, you can go to the DMV and get a permit (usually good for 30 days) that allow you to drive it on the road to and from a shop. If you get pulled over it basically acts as a registration for that purpose. I had a stack of them I used to get it to and from places for work. 2. Its impossible to estimate what it will take. I do know that, as of my most recent info, that G&K charge 12k for R32/33/34 conversion work, but outside of that it all comes down to what you need to do on your end. The 1500 dollar part is how much the state charges for the inspection work (which is part of the money you give to G&K so isn't something you need to consider IF you have them do the work). For my situation I needed the following before taking it to G&K: - New Upper Engine Harness - New MAF Sensors - Stock Fuel Regulator - Stock ECU - Stock Boost Controller - Remove Turbo Timer System - Stock Airbox All in that ran me around 4 grand (Including some shop labor to find out exactly why it was idling incorrectly). Add that to the 10k at the time that G&K charged and I was 14k into getting my California Registration on top of the cost of the car itself. Hopefully that helps clarify the info, and good luck on getting your import. It is a massive headache in Cali to get it done right for sure, but so much peace of mind knowing you won't have the car reffed or worse for illegal registration. Plus I now daily my R32 so being mostly stock makes it super reliable.

    Hey Mike great video, love the car. I had a question I don't know if you would happen to know. So say you take the car into G&K get it all squared away and modify whatever they did and end up getting popped by for a state ref? What happens then? Start the whole G&K process again? I'm asking because im looking at picking up an rx7 from japan and those didnt come with precats which is good because the precats kill rotary's but bad since im fairly certain the car would need them to be legal in cali.

    Sorry for the delay, didn't get a notification for this comment. As for what would happen, once it is CARB certified it keeps that so it will be the same as any other State Ref. You would have to fix whatever was reffed and have it inspected. I've never had to go through that flow so I do not know what it entails, but it shouldn't mean paying G&K all over again.

Or did they take a look and tell you to bring it back when those corrections were made? Also, do you know if there's a time limit to get the car up to CA compliance standards once you have the title in your name? In other words, how much time can I keep the car in my garage (non-driver) before I bring it to G&K?

    There was another gentleman in town who had gotten his car legalized who was able to get me up to speed a bit faster, but the general rule is nothing aftermarket. So for me, all the things I point out in the video were modified to be after market and I had to return them to stock. That being said, things like my radiator are not stock but you can't really tell. The good thing is G&K also know what is needed and will give you a heads up if anything you have missed has failed. As for a time limit, there is none as far as I am aware. Mine was in my garage for 2 years before finally getting legalized. Technically the car isn't "illegal" if it hasn't passed CARB and is in the state, it is only illegal to register, so having it stored in a garage for any length of time is fine.

    After being registered in California, can you modify the engine and car to around 500 hp or is there a yearly checkup?

  • @MikesJDMGarage

    @MikesJDMGarage

    4 жыл бұрын

    It's set as a normal smog check, so every 2 years you have to clear smog. Getting over 500 hp is likely possible, but you have to deal with the california laws on modifications and the like. That gets into some things I personally don't have experience with so this is all speculation but: Upgrades have to be certified per vehicle (which is why some aftermarket parts will be labled 49-state vs 50-state compliant. That 1 state is california). If a part isn't tested and registered for use on specific cars it can be considered illegal, and many parts for r32 were never tested for such use. I would imagine as long as it still passes smog once you get your hp figures you want, you likely are fine, but I can't say for certain what would happen if you got state ref'ed. I might try to get a video together once COVID goes away where I talk to some upgrade shops and get those answers, but until then I would just reach out to your local builders and see what they say.

  • @MikesJDMGarage

    @MikesJDMGarage

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey man, I actually dive a little into this question in my other video on the channel, but as a brief answer: As long as the vehicle passes the test for CARB certification then you can do that how you like. The test for CARB is $1500 pass/fail, and stops as soon as you fail, so be sure to do the research on everything they check (they don't just run a typical sniff check, they will go over every part of the car) and make sure you pass so you don't have to pay so much. This is why I went with GnK and their 10k fee. They handled all the welding (there isn't a CARB compliant cat for the car, you need to modify the exhaust to take on a new part that wasn't intended) and made sure it passed and if they messed up, it was out of their pocket. Once it is CARB, you can do whatever you want to the vehicle but you risk having to UNDO what you do if you get ref'ed for some reason, and the vehicle will still need to be sniff checked every 2 years. Let's be honest, people drive registered cars in Cali that are highly illegally modified, but as long as they don't get ref'ed then it doesn't matter. Personally I don't want to deal with it, but up to each owner to assume that risk. Congrats in advance for the R32 purchase though :) I can't wait to see what you end up with, and if you are in the LA area, hit up some shows and maybe we will see each other. Stay Awesome and thanks for the kind words on the channel :)

  • @MikesJDMGarage

    This is a tricky question. In MY scenario I did not. However I should have, because when I finally got it all squared, I ended up having to pay a penalty at the DMV for taking so long to pay the sales tax from buying the car and getting everything handled. So you CAN delay, but it will cost you (I think the fine was 600 dollars at the time). Long story short: Register as non-op so you can pay the taxes and get things ready until it is good to go.

    @@gimmieyogrits I'm not sure as that would depend more on the state you are registering it in. Non-Op just means it cannot be operated currently which typically means the car isn't running, but could just as easily mean it won't pass smog. • @MikesJDMGarage

    @MikesJDMGarage

    3 жыл бұрын

    I think that is highly unlikely. Prices don't seem to have been affected by the pandemic so far. The bigger thing that affects pricing is vehicle quality availability (are the only ones available rust buckets or are there clean examples for sale) and also what is coming up as legal (R33 gtrs for example as they came legal). Though on that second point, the prices of the R32 didn't really change when the R33 became legal. TLDR: if you are worried that post pandemic the prices will jump, I do not think that will be the case (at least not as a result of the pandemic). Though it is impossible to be 100% certain.

    Does the car run okay with gasoline in California? I believe most gas stations in California typically sell gas that contains 10% ethanol, and I've heard ethanol can cause damage to the fuel system of a car not designed to run on ethanol gas, so I was wondering if the Skyline is okay with E10 gas. Also, the highest octane you can get at most stations is only 91, does that cause any issues with engine knock or is the car happy on 91?

  • @MikesJDMGarage

    I've been running 91 since I got the car and it has been just fine. I know some people run octane boosters in their fuel and did so myself for a bit, but as it sits it works just fine without. That being said, I daily the car and am not building it up for 500+hp or the like. IF I was going to go that route, I would go e85 as many people have done which also works fine with the vehicle. Overall, you likely won't have issue with US fuel barring filling up at a shady station which might have bad fuel to begin with.

    How does the CARB modification affect the value of the car in regards to insurance? It seems like you kinda hinted at it when you said you report when you do things that raise the value of the car. So basically this car should be valued somewhere around $10,000 more than any non-California legal car, correct? Because I imagine given how popular the R32 GT-R is, that spending an extra $10,000 to make it California legal isn't that big of a deal (Besides having to spend more money to buy it in the first place and pay more in insurance) because you would have a lot of other California buyers willing to pay about that much more for your car now. I'm hoping to import a V5 or V6 STi or Evo V sometime in the future, but live in California and there's very, very little chance I would ever move. So thanks for making this video and talking about your experience, it's nice to hear from someone who's actually been through the process. It's nice to know as long as you can save up and pay that extra amount to make it California legal you don't have to miss out on imported cars. The main thing that always concerned me was if it costed $10,000 (Or whatever it costs in the case of an STi or Evo) that I would wanna make sure I can insure the car with that value included in case it ever got stolen or something.

Now I use State Farm insurance so ultimately I would suggest talking to whoever you plan on getting insurance with for more definitive answers, but with my setup I basically tell them how much the vehicle is worth and I pay a premium each month against that value. So I could have chosen not to tell them to raise the value by 10 grand in order to keep the insurance lower, but then if it gets wrecked I'm totally out that value. And to the resale point you hinted at as well, doing the modification indeed raises the value precisely because of what you say: many California residence would pay extra to get a vehicle already legal. TopRank, the local importer in LA does just that with Cali legal cars they have (charge extra due to added value). Best of luck with importing your sti or Evo (Personally I say go Evo! :) lol), and can't wait to see yours on the road.

    @@MikesJDMGarage Awesome, thanks for the response! It's really cool you just have State Farm, I assume it depends on the individual agency whether they accept your car or not, but still it's neat that you have an insurance agency a bunch of other people with regular cars have I don't mind paying more personally, I think it's the right move, you never really know what can happen, that's a lot of money to unexpectedly lose. Thanks you, I think it's most likely gonna be an Evo V. Btw, your blue GT-R especially when you put some white wheels on there is basically my ideal look for R32s (Also white R32s I think look amazing as well). It's such a gorgeous blue and white wheels are my favorite color for wheels for the most part. Not to mention you share some colors with the Calsonic GT-R. You probably won't see my Evo on the road for a while though (23, looking for my first accounting job out of college, realistically I'm hoping I can get one in my early 30s). That's why I felt weird about contacting Top Rank or an actual insurance company, I just didn't wanna waste their time since this will happening so far in the future. I don't know if you take your car to car shows like JCCS or Radwood, but maybe I'll see your car there one day. I'm just so happy knowing that I can still own an imported car despite living in California. There are way too many incredible cars from Japan (Europe and Australia too) that never came to the US. Thanks again for the video!

    @@brettcastro97 With State Farm it is all run through their national coverage system, so your agent just has to handle the overhead of getting the policy set up. If they refuse to even do that work, then I would be finding a new agency lol. Awesome to hear you are going with the Evo. I wish my Lancer was an Evo but sadly it is just the GT trim. It gets good gas milage though which is what I needed when I bough it. And yeah, a white R32 looks great as well. A friend of mine has a white one around here at we go driving from time to time (you can see pictures of his car over on my instagram at PxDnNinja so check him out). Nothing wrong with getting some base info early on when looking to make such an investment. I wouldn't reach out to an importer until you are closer, but you can still keep an eye out on prices and if you aren't seeing any to check, a quick email doesn't hurt. I personally reached out to Top Rank to see what the cost of importing and legalizing an older Toyota Hiace would be and just told them I wasn't actively looking to buy, just doing research to get ready. They sent me a quick email back with price ranges so now I know what I'm looking at if I go that route. Until then, put a picture of the car on your phone, computer, wall, wherever and use it to motivate you! If I can make it happen, anyone can :) I haven't gone to either of those events yet (and with COVID going on there is no telling when big events get back), but I'm all over LA and the Valley and hit up small events from time to time.

    @@CrispyCaterpillar If you want to register the car in California it has to pas the CARB certification. You don't have to use G&K to get that done, however they are the most effective and secure method. If you do the work yourself to get CARB compliant, you can pay the state 1500 to come inspect the car and get the sticker yourself, but if you fail, you are out 1500 and have to fix what was found wrong and pay another 1500 to test again. Basically: Your car has to be Carb compliant in California to register (even cars sold in the US for the US Market have to follow this, but manufacturers handle it as part of releasing the car). Once your car is registered in California it has to follow the normal laws for smog testing (which are dependent on when the car was made, so for my car its every 2 years).

  • @MikesJDMGarage

    They do not. You can buy adapters to move the hole positions, but I had one and it broke so I just have it held in by a single bolt and it sets slightly offset. The R32 gtr has a bracket that will hold the bottom of the plate making that possible, but if your car only has the top bolts and no bottom support, you will need to buy or fabricate an adapter. They are pretty cheap online or you can 3d print one if you have a printer.

The Importer MIGHT be willing to handle the actual work, but you will still have to pay for it.

    Unfortunately no. The fees I am talking about in the video apply to the vehicle when you are trying to register in California, no matter where the vehicle is originating from, so if you register in Nevada and then move it to Cali, you will have to do the CARB work and all that to get california registration. I am actually uploading a more comprehensive video on such info as well as other questions I get on the R32 in the next day or so, so perhaps that will help as well, but the long and short of it is if you want to own and register the car in Cali, you gotta pay the CARB fees (or buy a car that has already had it done.

    I've been all over my car and it has no rust on it anywhere and the process of working with RHD was fantastic. I've also heard some people say what you have heard, but haven't seen any first hand proof of that. Now I bought my car back in 2017 so could things have changed? Sure, but my car and the couple of people I know who bought cars through them around the same time all had really good experience and no issues. When I was about to purchase my video, they recorded video walking around the vehicle, looking under it, and the interior as well as starting it up and while there were a few issues, they were up front about where they were and what was wrong. Those issues were also considered as we talked price. TL:DR my experience was fantastic, but as it was 5 years ago I can't speak to if anything has changed. No matter who you shop through, make sure to do your own due diligence as well and if you do not feel comfortable, walk away.

    If the vehicle is an import from another country, no matter the circumstance, you will have to jump through the same hoops for California. The vehicle isn't what matters as much as the fact that it is grey market. The only way to get around it is to buy a vehicle already here that someone else has done all the work to. IE: If I were to sell my R32, the next owner would be able to just register in Cali since I have done all the work.

  • @MikesJDMGarage

    A quick followup to that, the other exception is if the vehicle is older than 1967, at which point it is exempt even from California CARB requirements, but that wasn't applicable for your example. Nonetheless others will read this and either say as much or be confused.

    Great informative video. Yeah California has always been notoriously hard for emissions but that's also why our air quality has much improved since the 70s. Being that the majority of Skylines have already been modified its hard to CARB-certify these cars. And of course most Skyline owners want to tune and race them; that's the whole point of owning a Skyline in my opinion. To beat Ferraris at a fraction of the cost. That was great you brought up the issue of registering out of state. I suppose if you register in another state but primarily drive in California you could sneak under the radar. Im guessing one would have to have documentation to prove out of state residency to be legitimate. But otherwise it is a risk that can prove deadly if caught

    Question, I’m currently in Japan and I own a R-33 GTR Vspec. I am heading to San Diego later down this year. If my car is registered in my home of record because I’m military, would I have issues in California?

  • @MikesJDMGarage

    @MikesJDMGarage

    3 жыл бұрын

    This is a tricky question since I haven't had to tackle the military aspect of dealing with California but here is what I do know: If your vehicle is not registered in California, then it does not have to conform to California requirements. For non-military, if you live in the state for more than 30 days you are legally supposed to convert the registration to California and would be susceptible to CARB stuff mentioned in the video. Given that you are military there might be an exemption to that law for you, but again I do not know. I would check with whoever on base handles legal questions for troops. Another thing to consider is the year of your vehicle. If I recall, R33 V-Spec covers 1995 to 1998, of which only the 1995 year is legal in the US. Even in the military your vehicle must qualify for the 25 year law, so when you relocate from Japan to San Diego, you will need to make sure the vehicle is even eligible for import. Best of luck on it, and if you find out if there is an exemption for military on the state registration stuff do let me know. If you legally can get out of registering in California then you are good. If you are required to register in California then you are stuck with the mods. (Note: people will say just register in Oregon or Montana and while technically you can do that, it isn't really legal unless you live in those state and you can get hit with tax evasion and such if caught).

    Heavily dependent on a multitude of factors. The R35 is a higher single payment (normally, though there are R32s that go for more than some R35s, but that is the exception), but the R35 has easier part sourcing, newer tech and parts in general so maintenance will be more reliable, and when it comes to California there are more options for the R35. All in, with what I have spent on my 32, I could buy a R35 (2014 or older) and would love it. I just prefer the 32, difficulty and all lol. Though with the R35 being discontinued, the market is all over the place.
