⚠️ Modifying an RB26? Watch this FIRST! | R32 GT-R [TECH TALK]

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this first episode, we’re going to look at the first things any R32 owner should do when looking to improve the output of their RB26DETT. Among the upgrades we do to the car are a plug & play Link ECU, Walbro 255LPH fuel pump, Bosch 1000cc EV14 injectors and a MAC 3 port boost control solenoid to keep the factory turbos that have previously been fitted with steel wheels at the boost levels we want.
We remove a previously fitted wasted spark system replacing it with a later model G35 coil and plug system and also bypass the ballast resistor to accommodate our new high impedance fuel injectors using a simple wire in kit from NZEFI - Performance, Tuning and Development.

    The one question I have is on the charging/alternator system -- do you find the stock alternator output to present any voltage issues when running a modern ECU, larger fuel system and more powerful spark setup (and commonly an HID kit for the awful stock lights)? There are high output kits available and kits to swap to something like an LS1's alternator which stock has more amps (I think 125 vs 70, as an example). Love this new video series - this is the basic mod path I am planning for on the engine side. I have a BNR32 with mods from Japan that are very similar to how this car started and just looking to tidy and modernize the engine for safety and a small bump in performance.

    Hi Taz, well my RB25DET threw a conrod straight through the block 3 weeks ago under normal driving conditions and no mods to the engine. After it happened I was telling my mechanic about it and he said this was the 4th RB he knew that threw a rod under relatively light load. My #4 conrod was broken. Piston still moves freely with no damage to liner or piston rings.

    RB are a really quirky engines, with ITB and twin turbos with ceramic impellers it’s clear that it was made for motorsport, but why then is the oiling system so bad in these engines. Can you elaborate? I’ve learned a ton from you guys already🖖

  • @hpa101

    @hpa101

    6 жыл бұрын

    The ceramic turbine wheels are actually terrible for motorsport use, and are known to fail above about 15 psi (the turbos on this car have already been swapped out for steel wheel variants). The oiling system in the Rb26 is known to be problematic, however in any serious competition car the oiling system will inevitably be swapped out for a dry sump anyway.

  • @djjmann

    I've heard through the grapevine that the reason the engineers thought moving a large volume of oil through the head was regarding the solid-lifter design. They were thinking with the engine capable of such high operating RPM and solid lifters it would require more oil for lubrication and heat management. Of course, time told us that with the lackluster TLC a majority of these older R32 GTR's got, a majority of RB26's succumbed to oil sludge and pooling of oil in the head, spinning bottom end bearings and scarring camshaft journals. Of course, its common knowledge now to add a small oil return line from the head to the block near the firewall to minimize the pooling of oil in the head and maximize the availble oil in the sump for the bottom end. Anyone correct me if I am wrong, this is just items i've heard through the grapevine....

    It def interesting to see some tuning tips on the RB26. If those are the factory painted valve covers. Then the RB26 unit here should be the later GTR R34 RB26DETT. The original RB26 in the R32 and R33 are black. There are slight differences from the different gen of RB26s from the R32 to the R34. And the N1 and RRR blocks are the most sought after for high powered applications. Interesting the owner stick to the twin turbo setup. Many would have ditch the 90s era turbo units for the single turbo setup. Did the owner upgraded the water and oil pump? Because the stock units from the factory with high temps and boost are a bad mix. Most will upgrade those first before doing any major mods. While ITBs are great for most engines. Most would opt for a single big throttle body for simplicity. Speaking of which Mighty Car Mods is building a 240Z with the RB26 from a R33 and GTT R34 5 speed RWD only gearbox. Cant wait for the final product.

  • @hpa101

    @hpa101

    Don't worry, the twin turbo setup is not going to be sticking around long. They're only there because that is how the car was purchased. We will be moving to an EFR 8374 single turbo. It will also be getting a built motor, potentially with a 2.8 stroker kit. For the moment the stock oil pump remains however we've only found them to be problematic if you try spinning the engine past 8000 rpm. Of course the narrow drive face of the early RB26 crank isn't ideal and again will be addressed in the not too distant future.

    Very interesting, but not enough details. Which ecu you decided to use? What are the name of resistor are you going to install? I would also be interested to see how is possible to modify rb25det s2, with a/t. I have stock nissan stagea 34, Series 1, rb25det+a/t . If I will decide to make some boostup. What boost is tha highest for stock maf and ecu. I am also installed audi coils, walbro pump. And also it is interesting which spark types use (5,6,7)? Thanks in advance for your reply.

    @Insane The ECU is mentioned specifically in the video ;) We just bypassed the resistors using a kit from NZ EFI, 15 PSI is as high as you want to go with a stock ceramic wheel. Hope that helps! For spark plugs and fuel system requirements, these are topics that we cover in our members-only webinars and not something we can do justice to in just a few minutes in a video like this - www.hpacademy.com/webinars/ - Taz.

    Not sure how far we'll go with this car as it depends on what the owner wants to do. A single turbo conversion is in the pipeline, but it is a streetcar and always will be so there is a limit to how far you can go before it ruins that aspect - Taz.

    Just the video I've been hoping for. Great job. My question is, Is the owner considering an electronically controlled fan instead of the standard setup? I'd be interested to know the parasitic loss of the standard system especially at high RPMS and would also like to know if the standalone Link ECU you've chosen could control such operation?

  • @GTRNights

    @GTRNights

    5 жыл бұрын

    Seriously? Cold air intake isn't that important with a turbo car, since it's mostly your intercooler that's going to be doing the work. Once the air is being compressed by the turbo, it's going to heat up to WAY hotter than what's in the engine bay. Don't waste your time with anything meant to be "cold" intake because it's pointless. Dyno numbers prove cold air intakes on NA cars don't actually help either. Your main priority needs to be flow.
