Angry Rant: Recasts Are Bad Mmmmmmkay

It's not clear cut. It's not about channeling funds back into GW to support the hobby, it's about 3 key factors:
-cost
-availability
-quality/service
Three things that feel very fuckin' alien in Australia.

    I only got into 30k recently and honestly it was 2 factors that made it possible. The boxed sets that GW released to give me a cheap (legit) way to buy into a new army. And the recasters allowing me to expand my army without destroying my bank account. I have about 2500 points of Night Lords now and I would say 3/5 would be legit models and 2/5 are recasts. I am expecting to expand this to about 50/50 for both and I think that is totally fair. My characters and books and my core force are all legit and I feel that it is completely fair considering I would have never purchased these without the support of recasters to enable me to buy up to a proper army size. Forgeworld/GW are basically getting about $200-400 a year from me to continue my force and that would honestly be $0 without the option for reasonable priced models from China.

    I'm from México and there isn't an official GW store anywhere, only official retailers(?) and the mxn peso isn't holding well right know, so when anyone decides to buy a legit GW model, it means maybe spending half or even more from the paycheck. So plastic crack or food and toilet paper?

    Both Tau and Necrons Warriors. 3rd edition release you got 12 models, plus 2 drones or 3 scarab bases, for 29.99 a box. Same box now is 60 for the Firewarriors I know, and thats only 10 warriors in the box. Yes that now includes the parts for the Breacher team but thats not nearly DOUBLE the amount of plastic you got with the 3rd edition box. Or take a Landraider which has had probably only about a 10% increase in the parts but has gone from the 45/50 range in 3rd to a whopping 75 dollars now.

    agreed. as a fellow ausi I'm more than sick of the overcharging and more recently my local gw manager stated models with 3rd party bits aren't allowed on his store tables (and likely not in armies on parade style events) which has left me questioning whether it's worth my giving gw any money on another note I'm utterly fed up with the limited ed stuff that you either can't buy anymore or aren't available in our country (limited edition chaplain which is only available at new stores, imperial space maine only avalible in 2016 over one weekend, not to mention the wahammer world exclusives) at this point the only way to get them in aus is to get the recasts of them or insane ebay prices that could cover someone's education costs

    Great video as always, I'm in the UK and even I think gamesworkshop are taking the piss with some of the prices so seeing the Australian prices was paonful, if gamesworkshop want to stop recasters they could implement a cast to order system for discontinued models and as for there event only models, why not have global events where you can buy them there its unfair more than anything, I don't have amy recasts myself but if they are getting people into the hobby and getting old models back in production then fair play to them.

    i used to cast my own stuff in resin myself at an equal detail level to forgeworld and it costs a tiny fraction of what they charge. as with other GW pricing it is hugely inflated. they have created their own problem in recasters as players will not tolerate such high prices and as you say, they vote with their wallet. i left GW games 2 years ago because i was no longer prepared to pay what they charged even using 15-20% off independent retailers. enter the recasters who put out a product that may not be as high a quality but still looks just the same when its cleaned up and painted for 50-75% less than the official model...usually with free shipping too. i will go to a recaster every single time. until GW reduce their prices...which they never will i will continue to buy what i can afford. they don't like that well they forced my hand. if it wasn't for recasters i would have stayed out of GW games indefinitely but because i can buy them cheap i picked up a 30k iron warriors list, 4000pts points worth, for £300. thats a grands worth almost at forgeworld prices. i would never ever pay a grand for a bunch of resin models i KNOW cost less than £30 in actual raw materials to make. probably much less as they buy in bulk for their resin. hell no. the same concept applies to pirating films etc. i would never buy dvds or blue rays at £10-20 a pop. never spend £30 on box sets for a single series. i can't afford to. its sales they never would have made from me regardless. BUT by watching it you enlarge its fanbase which only helps to inflate sales for stuff like merchandising in the long run and big picture. same principal applies to this. someone might see me playing my sweet ass iron warriors army and think fuck yeah i want some of this shit and goes n spends however much at GW. just using the product regardless of who you bought it from enlarges the fanbase big picture wise. i don't feel bad for doing it. you shouldn't either. if GW don't like it, they know what they can do don't they. they won't. but they know.

    "when the demand is there and the supplier wants to fuck people around, people are gonna fuck back"... LOVE IT! The sad thing is unless the new senior management at GW actually take a look at the Australian market and what they are doing to themselves here long term nothing is going to change... almost every LGS I've been to in the last year has significantly shrunk WH40K and AoS display space (and stock levels), and in every case is now actually smaller than the space devoted to their competitors... GW have literally priced themselves out of the Australian market; they just dont know it yet...

  • @TheOuterCircle

    @TheOuterCircle

    7 жыл бұрын

    Quite true. That's the trend I've seen in FLGS here myself, and funny enough my friends who manage FLGS say that Sigmar is outselling 40k. It's crazy.

  • @arthos85

    @arthos85

    7 жыл бұрын

    Well the barrier to entry has been significantly lowered to get into the fantasy scene so TBH I think that would have been expected. I was always convinced that AoS didn't have the ability to retain its new player base long term, but its clear to me now; that isn't GWs strategy. They want new players to get in the door with AoS, progress to 40K and get locked in for life at 30K... Honestly with the announced changes in 8th ed, the next massive boom will again be in 30K & GW competitors (even more so than before) as the 40K old guard that are unhappy with the changes flock to their other solutions. Based on their strategy for customer retention, GW is banking on these people sticking with them and progressing to 30K, and this will happen to some extent even in Australia as more old school 40kers either have a 30k army already, OR they have been thinking about it but haven't felt totally compelled to drop the big $$ YET (something that will surely happen with they Sigmarize 40k). However, I personally believe that what GW haven't thought about is the price barrier of going from a playable AoS army to a playable 8th ed 40k army in AUD.... I foresee this groundswell of popularity in AoS not being converted into 40K sales down the line by GW here in Australia simply on price barrier to entry. Basically I see the hobby contracting significantly for GW in Australia over the next 5 years, where as I actually think this strategy will work rather well in other country's. They can give all the excuses they want for their prices here, overheads for their stores etc, but the fact is they are selling toy soldiers and craft supplies. If their business model means that to turn a profit they need these ludicrous prices then their model needs to change, because from where I'm sitting as a long term supporter of GW, that threats quadrant here is getting beyond risky in Australia for them. Even I'm thinking about buying into some Mantic stuff now... and I would have laughed in your face if you told me I'd be looking at other table top systems in my lifetime... GW has always been expensive, but theres a point where expensive became retarded... that was when that 40% price premium to the UK meant that you spend $100 for a single non-monstrous creature model.... seriously you gotta be fucking kidding right!? They need to stop with the BS Australia tax and sell their product for the price VERY close to the UK for their retention strategy to work in australia. Yeah their profit per item will drop, but their volume will go through the fucking roof! Now I have no figures to say that this would mean an actual profit for GW, but what I can say is even if its a short term financial loss, its better than losing your consumer base! Basically if they don't lower Australian prices with this strategy being implemented their longevity is toast in the Australian market. GW cant handle another 2 years of competitors taking market share from them here led alone another 5+ years. Unfortunately they don't see the urgency because they think if it comes to that point they will drop the prices and push the game and people will come back to them... WRONG... GW are forgetting something they've played off for years, the crazy levels of consumer loyalty found in table top gamers; when you have them they will go out of their way to support your game/company. But when you don't have them you need to be BOTH cheaper and better... and GW's general laziness and contempt for its customers has allowed other products to get their quality up to a NEAR GW standard... another couple of years and I doubt I'll be able to honestly say that GW is flat out better anymore. TLDR; they need to change the prices in Australia or they're boned in the Aus market.

GW makes some great kits, but if their price gouging (which is what it is) makes it unreasonable for you to enjoy your hobby, then by all means, get re-casts, or get a similar model with the same footprint made by another company that isn't after your mortgage payment, and enjoy your hobby. At the end of the day no one should ever have to live life at a lower standard to enjoy a hobby. Any company that doesn't agree with that premise doesn't deserve to make a single cent.

    Now I live in Britain, and I would be blind to not see where you, and the recasters are coming from, but what I'd like to point out is that the models shouldn't be the fucking original prices by default. It's been really difficult for me to get into the hobby, because there's so many armies I'd like to play but I don't have the extreme sums of cash to shell out. Even when I stick to one army, it still takes a hell-uv-a-lot to get a nice 1k army, which is what my local recommends I walk in with. I'm not willing to pay £46 quid for something I can get for £20 or less from recasters (Thousand Sons Contemptor) or £50 for some nice looking Cataphractii termites that I can get for £20 (Heresy Era Scarab Occult Terminators).

GW... if you're gonna cut the models in half, cut the prices in half! I have no problem paying $55 for a Land Raider, but when you raise it to $65? I'll go Ebay or Recast until you think it over..

    Same thing in the US but to a lesser extent. Item is 15 GBP, which is roughly 19 US Dollars, it sells for 25. Better example the new starter deals, Index and starter box. On the British site its 65 GBP, US its 110. So they are charging and extra 25 dollars compared to the exchange rate. Yeah thats no where near as bad as you Aussies who have to pay nearly double the GBP cost. GW uses the excuse its to pay store employees. Well guess what there are hardly any GW stores in the US so why am I paying a increase for no bloody reason?

If we make more profit after 4 months, lower again and repeat until profit goes down!"Day two: "listen to customers! They want it, we will sell it. Design team! Plastic Sisters of Battle... Go! New CSM codex... All the funds you want! Nerf OP stuff... DO IT NOW BEFORE ANOTHER CHAOS PLAYER LOSES TO TAU CHEESE!!!! Cheaper models for entry to the hobby. If I don't have a plan weitten in pen on my desk by next Monday, you're fired!!!" Day 3: "Fix the lore (except Ward's stuff, he gets his own day), reduce Black Library prices so people can actually know the fluff! Do model sales, like buy one get one half price! Get a GOOD 40K movie made!!!! And a GOOD 40K game that people have been asking for... Actually care about LoTR/The Hobbit..."Day 4: "Offer the guys who did Evil Craft miniatures jobs! Make a fan suggestion page!!! NOW!!!! Fix FW miscasts aand fix the missing parts issues..."Day 5: "Get Matt Ward here to burn his bad fluff and retcon it! ONLY the worst bits. Re write it but better!!! And make him BURN Guilliman!"

    omggggggg I am sick to death of this fucking argument, why are so many people economic simpletons. Just because they drop their price doesnt mean lost profits, if they drop prices (dramatically/ to realistic levels of markup) more people will buy models. If they drop prices they will experience a short drop in profits and then either recover to normal or exceed previous profits.

    While I agree that you guys and gals in Oz are getting charged very high prices you need to also factor in the international distribution costs to make a like for like cost comparison. You are not getting charged any extra over UK customers paying $7.00 postage on orders under $85.00 and GW has no Australia based production so the majority of the distribution costs are being hidden in the ticket price. Otherwise, the fact that FW costs about the same as GW for you is absolutely nuts.

    The Outer Circle True, but that assumes GW have a lean Kanban logistics operation keeping the seven wastes to a minimum. I suggest they don't and send a steady stream of parcels, one per order, out to all overseas customers and don't bulk ship, they are using airmail. This means delivery times are quick but costs are high. Its not just here, they have separate warehouse locations and inventories and systems for GW and FW ranges - we all pay for that inefficient set up!

The company keeps dodging it by being in the UK and is trying to get the venue changed to the UK where the law will let them say "FUCK YOU"! This isn't even taking into account that, if you crunch the numbers, even if they were using milled steel molds, Forge World is making something like 300% profit. I'm honestly glad that I generally play orks, meaning I can kitbash and scratch-build most of my vehicles...

    this a troll? gotta be a troll. because anyone with a little fucking sense would understand why you are paying more for the model, for same reason you are paying more from everything else you would order from the UK. because the currency, which is caused by multiple factors but the result remains the same. you pay more because it is of equal worth. it is same everywhere, sometimes you pay less, sometimes more. depending on a country and currency. would think this is rather simple math, dont try telling me you didnt know this.

    As someone who imports parts all the time from overseas for work, I perfectly understand how economics work, but rather than an inflation of price which correlates to other products from the UK. Essentially the UK price is: Cost + VAT = UK Price And the Australian Price should be: UK Price - VAT + GST(which is less than VAT) + import tariff(again, quite low) =/- Conversion rate But instead Australians and Kiwis, Japanese etc. get charged UK Price *PLUS* GST *PLUS* tariff and @ a fixed conversion rate so that you will always pay a much higher price.
