I started photography 12 years ago and had no idea about lenses. I've been misguided by a lot of experts (by saying that so) to buy the newest version of Nikkor lenses. I never heard about 105mm f2D or 135mm f2D or 200mm f4, 105mm f2.5 and so on!!! Since I bought all in the price of just two of my massive and new lenses, I understood what quality and color saturation means. I just wanted to say thank you to you for your honesty and guidance in this matter. A big thank you from Australia.

A someone trying to cover as many bases as possible with the smallest payout, I see no reason to have a 100 and 105 or a 50, 58 and a 60. I have the Token 100 and the 80-200. I also have the 35mm 1.8.

Almost a year later and at the time I only owned two of these lenses. Now I own all but two. My first from these recommendations was the 180mm and my first images from it were shocking. What a difference between that lens with 8 elements vs the 70-200mm with 23 elements. So, I've been slowly but surely buying one after another. Shooting with each to appreciate it's unique qualities and I've been very pleased with the results. The only two I don't now have are the 20mm and the 50mm, but I have the 24mm and the 58mm Voit and I feel those are close enough and anything I'd need a 20mm for, a 24mm should work and if I need wider, I now have the 15-30mm. Same with the 50mm. I already have three other 50mm and I'd probably prefer the 58mm anyway. This was one of my favorite videos that I came across of yours last year. These recommendations are excellent. Personal favorites are the 35mm, 180mm, 58mm, 80-200mm and the 100mm DC (or 135mm DC) lenses. If I were to add anything, it would be the 300mm f/4 AF ED. Thank you for all the fantastic recommendations!

Update: Okay, so a little over a year since I first saw your videos. I've probably watched between 500 and 700 of your 3300 video library, mostly lens reviews and lighting setups. I had all but the 50mm zf.2 and the 20mm 1.8G and after landing a nice corporate gig that actually paid well, I decided to grab the 50mm Zeiss. I went ahead and got it new in the box and I've done the first round of test shots on my also new D850. Of the 12 of 13 lenses listed here, this one may be the finest. Just an edge above the 35mm and the 58. But that's only a first impression. Damn, that 50 has huge render depth. Images are almost alive SOOC. There is an amazing amount of realism of the subject unlike any regular lens. I'm blown away.

Some nice lenses. I have the 200mm, and the 60mm mentioned. I love the precision feel of the micro 60mm and build. Better depth of field than the popular 90mms, if you can get in close enough. One older lens I found like new for about $180 that is a real bargain is the 28-105 F3.5 4.5 D series zoom. Stopped down a stop and it is amazing in contrast and sharpness and it even can do 2:1 macro. It can have some flare issues if you are not careful is about all I can complain about. They keep telling me the new lenses are sharper, but I have not seen any kit zoom perform like this old one. The very small 20mm Dseries F2.8 is another gem of a lens, I must add.

I will say it again, your narration is amazing ! Your videos are just so entertaining ! Honesty, humor, you are getting somewhere man, use your skills wisely ! Καλησπερα !

Hi there. I do have a question as it relates to the Nikkor 180mm 2.8. I found a version for a little under $400 and am thinking of taking the plunge. However, one of the things that I read on Rockwell's site in his review is that it struggles with focus accuracy with a subject that is closer than 40 ft. I am hoping that's just a typo, or better, totally false. Have you noticed anything like that or any other kind of focusing accuracy issues with that particular lens?

Hi, I had the Nikkor 105 1.2 DC, loved it but I also had Nikkor Macro 105 2.8 VR and I noticed that it was a bit sharper. Wht¨s you opinion about teh VT macro lens ? Works for portraits as well I guess but teh DC was really speciall I agree, felty great in my hand.

I want you to know I own all of these bought one by one per your recommendations and you are right 100% hands down.

So, I literally ordered four lenses this morning: - Nikkor 135mm 2.8 - Nikkor 105mm 2.5 - Tokina 100mm 2.8 - Nikkor 180mm 2.8 I ordered these on your recommendations. I wish I could have gotten the Zeiss 85mm 1.4, but that and the Tamron 15-30mm 2.8 will just have to wait until my next incentive. I thank you, Angry Photographer, for keeping me from wasting any more money on the Nikon brand stuff that may be inferior optically . . . and optics are THE MOST IMPORTANT thing to me.

Yeah, I couldn't take it anymore and just took the plunge. The Tamron 15-30mm and Zeiss 85mm will finish it up. I'm holding off on the Tamron 70-200mm for now and the Voigtlander 58mm is intriguing, but I rarely use my 50mm, so I don't know if I would actually use the 'Lander. The Tokina will arrive by Friday, the Nikkor 180mm by Monday and the other two some time in early March, since they're coming from Japan.

Hi Theoria Apophasis thank you for the video. I have almost decided to buy an Nikon D700. It is only 12mp with AA filter, not as d800e / 810 / 850. Which from the lenses from the video could you recommend as most compatible with d700 for the ultimate magic photos? (Out of this list too) Also from the Voigtländers - there are only 58 f1,4 and 40mm f2 for DSLR ? I would be thankful.

I have a D5500 and I'm really having a hard time picking 2 new lenses so I can stop using the kit. I'm stuck between the nikon 35mm 1.8g vs the 50mm 1.8g for a prime or the tamron 28-75 f2.8 vs the 24-85mm 3.5-4.5 (you mentioned it as the sharpest midrange) I'm trying to get into wedding, portraits, children, and street photography.

I’m in process of setting up my lenses setup for a FF Canon and Nikon. I think I could go with: - Nikon 14-24mm 2.8G - Zeiss Distagon 2/35 - Zeiss Makro Planar 2/105 ZF.2 - Nikon 200-400mm 4.0G VR Plus for Canon: - Canon 24-70mm 2.8L II - Canon 50mm 1.2L - Canon 70-200mm 2.8L IS II Maybe I should change the Zeiss Distagon 2/35 for a Nikon 50mm 1.4G. I’m not sure about the Canon 24-70mm since I’m not a pro, maybe I could go with a 16-35mm 2.8L III instead of both 24-70 and 14-24. Or maybe should go with the Tamron 15-30mm 2.8 F2. What do you suggest?

Interesting selection Ken. I have some of these and some others. My advice is to consider which lenses are actually required in a photographers work. Indeed there isn't a perfect lens that's why we probably end up with too many :)

Hello, big fan and love your channel. Do you by any chance own Nikon's 200mm f4d macro lens? Looking for some input. I have the lens and feel that it's over hyped and that the sharpness is not that good for a macro lens. Would you mind sharing your thoughts.

How would you comp are the nikon 180mm f2.8 with the tamron 180mm f2.5 apart from the largest aperture?

I'm curious if you use any of these lenses with an aperture ring adapted to your fuji?

I just picked up the Nikon 20mm 1,8 G after returning my 28mm 1.8 G and paying the cost difference. I really love the 20mm and it has proven to be useful for a lot of different shooting situations. My 35mm 2.8 AIS is better for street photography than the 28mm. I have a 24-120mm f/4 VR which is handy for walk around so the 20mm prime allows me to go wider. Although the 24mm 1.8 didn't make the cut here I would like that one too, Ken gave it a favorable elsewhere. I get good flower close ups in the garden with the 60mm 2.8D macro and that lens is really a lot of fun. I ordered the Tokina 100mm 2.8 macro but I am waiting for it as Ken's reviews are making it harder to find on dealers shelves. This video is pure lens candy!

I owned the 80-200 2.8 but it had extreme backfocus af 200mm. Maybe a bad copy or so? On the internet i discoverd that more people had a backfocus problem. What is your experience with this lens on a digital slr?

which 85mm????? the zeiss 85?? hell yes the 58mm voigt is WAY better and MUCH cheaper than the nikkor, everyone wets themselves that buys it, its amazing

everytime i think of the Nikkor 135mm 2.8 lens, i can't believe how amazing it is. The color and rendition are absolutely incredible. I have one and want like 2 more for no reason lol.

I know it’s a new age of Mirrorless but I just got a spotless used D850 today and I’m here to watch this video again. I own a few of your recommendations here. 5 in total I can’t wait to see the IQ with the mighty D850 sensor using some of this exquisite F mount glass. Regarding the 24-70 Nikkor, the pictured lens seems to be the G lens. The current non-G lens costs significantly more and has 20 elements. Is the lens you are describing an out of production lens?

Hi.. What you think of the old Nikkor 70-210mm f/4-5.6? My wife owns one for almost 20 years and it´s in the wardrobe. Don´t use it much. Very nice video. Need your help in deciding about 2 of the lenses you mentioned in the video. Which of the following is your suggestion and recommendation as you have used both. 1. 80-200 f2.8 D Pushpull version for about 350$ OR 2 ring new version for about $550 ? IS the 2 ring version worth the extra 200$? 2. 135mm Ai f 2.8 for about 275$ or f 3.5 for about 130$ ?

Hi Ken, just bought a Nikkor 24-50 3.3 D (very cheap). I like the old D lenses is this one useful? I am aware it's certainly not one of the best, but i'm hoping to enjoy it and give the autofocus motor in my D7000 a workout. Regards Oliver

What's the difference between the Zeiss 35 f2 ZF.2 and Milvus? I know you don't like the Milvus, but everything I've seen about it says it has the same optics?

I would like a longer focal length for my portraits than my 50mm 1.8G Nikkor. on a budget and thinking of getting the Tokina 100m and having the added functionality of a Macro lense. my other choice would be the 85mm 1.8 Nikkor. I am interested in black and white portraits. Opinions?

+Eliellasdad diff worlds there, you need macro????? one is AF the other MF more info needed really.......... however the 60mm for MOST people at $200 is the supreme choice.

I feel like you are going to scold me for this but I took my Rokinon 35mm F1.4 apart the other day. It had too much dust inside to be useful to me anymore. Now that it's apart, I find that it's way too difficult to get it back together clean. Should I just recycle this thing or is there a place that will put it back together for me. Please show mercy.

My List tried tested used in commercial work and i own…….. across the board …..Voightlander 20mm - Nikor 105 RF - Nikon 24mm tilt shift - Nikon 24 -70 - Voightlander 58 mm - Nikor 50MM 1.4 AF Nikon 200 - 500 f4 - Nikon 24 -120 LF -ED VR 4G ( Unlike the old crap 24 -70 ) the new one is brilliant but expensive. For WOW factor and money maker for pros ……. the Nikor 2.8 rear focus 105 ….. Voightlander manual focus 20 mm ….. Nikon 200 - 500 ….24 mm Nikon tilt shift . And yes the Tokina 20 mm af 1.8 ( won't be sharp until 5.6 )

What about the Nikon 35-70 3.5 AiS? It's a pretty solid performer, I think.

I got the Nikkor 60mm 2.8D on your recommendation and it is really amazing. The macro on it is OUTSTANDING! The only thing I have against it is that it doesn't work completely for full frame (I have the D750). It crops at 1.2. It also doesn't stay at f2.8 all the time (it moves up to f3.2 sometimes), I can't figure that part out-it's a prime lens. Thanks for the recommendation though, overall it's a great lens!

hell yes, that lens is so useful too :) ..... crop? no thats a full frame lens it doesnt crop anything..... yes yes, thats cause the front element zooms out and the light falls off, nearly all macro lenses to that :)

I'll have to send you a picture (somehow) of what I see in the viewfinder. There's a crop box just inside the edge of the frame and then it says dx 1.2 in the top right corner. (I'm at work now and don't have it with me, but I can send you something later)

sir ... i have nikon d5200 and my firmware is up to date ie 1.03. ..at present i want to purchase a lens ....whether i go for nikon AS-P 70-300 or Tamron di ld 70-300....my main use is photograph not vedio ...aperture value is not good in AS-P lens then tamron so i am verymuch confused between dis 2 lens ...kindly say which lens is good for photography with good blue background

tokina 100mm 2.8 better

i have a 18-55mm, 55-200mm lens and also a nikkor 35mm f1.8 lens. what would you recommend next ? maybe a tokina 100mm f2.8 ? im interested in macro. i like sharp images .

Theoria Apophasis What wide zoom would you reccomend ? Is there any lense thats sharp and good for portraits but for not a high budget.

@ Theoria Apophasis, if money is no object would you choose the Voigtlander 58mm Nokton OR, the Sigma 50mm 1.4 ART lens?? Been a huge fan of your vids, and learned quite a bit from all of the supremely sublime info you give out :) Thank you!

Sir, I would like to shake your hand and buy you dinner. lol. I just purchased the Nikon 200mm f/4 through ebay about to see what what beauty she will produce, perhaps even give her the sniff test ;) hah jk. Next up, Im contemplating on whether getting the Voigtlander 58mm OR the supremely sublime Zeiss 35mm f/2 distagon.. Thanks Ken!

got the 135 f3.5 ais frm japan mint condition for 170$ canadian! Very nice sharp and color rendition is wonderfull! thanks angry🤓🤩

Ken is using a medium format like a zenzanon bronica on a 860 or 750 , is it usefull

Greetings from London & many thanks for all your informative and educational videos and great humour! I am now a Fuji man, but one of my favourite old Nikon lenses (I used to have a D3), was the old Nikon 70-180 Macro (not a true macro of course). I can't find your review on this one. I might get another and use it on my XT1 with a metabones adaptor. I use macros for insect photography. I just wondered what you think of this lens? I know you must have tried one out! Keep 'em coming, Dennis.

+Dennis Kallmer PHUJI PHAN! I didnt review that specific lens anywhere :) that lens is a RARE BIRD ,the 70-180 . if youre gonna buy another rather get a 200mm macro nikkor D AF

+Theoria Apophasis - I couldn't get on with the 200mm Macro, in fact I was not only disappointed with that, I didn't really rate the 105mm Macro either. I sold them both! Actually getting better Butterfly shots with my Fuji on three different lenses! Both manually and AF. Looking forward to trying the new Fuji macro when available (120mm I think). Might even go for the Tokina. The 70-180 is readily available at Grays of Westminster, but expensive. Lovely lens in my opinion. Keep 'em coming, just love your videos! Dennis.

Freddie Slaughter The Nikkor 85mm f/1.8G is awesome and can be had brand new for about $450ish.

One that you missed that I love is the Nikon 200mm prime manual focus, lol. Was one of your recommended lenses, and love it.

@@kathodosdotcom you must've never used the Nikon 50mm f/1.8S lens for the Z6 or Z7. It's better than any 50mm you can name.
