+Theoria Apophysis ***bear with me please*** My love of photography started my freshman year of high school, i took it as an elective course as many years as i could... its all i wanted to do after graduation. well, my Senior year 9-11 happened, i went into the military.. fast forward 13 yrs later when I remembered the itch i had in high school because i saw a wedding photographer movin' and groovin" at a friends wedding. i started with a D5500 which i had a week till i took it back and traded it for a refurbished D7100 and a used af-s 70-300mm VR ED. Being a hot shot national geographic photographer will never happen for me now, who the fuck has time for college in this economy with a full time job, mortgage, and a family right?... to the point.. Google, youtube and your sir, have been my professors for the last year and half. my primary lenses are most of these old school wonders you've been telling us about, as much as i love photography ill never be a professional, i fucking hate photoshop lol and cannot justify spending $1600 on a lens. and I'm actually grateful for it. Using these older lenses has forced me to remember what i learned in high school they force me to slow the fuck down and think about what it is I'm trying to accomplish and I'm a better photographer for it!!! so thanks brother your videos are the real CATS ASS!!

One issue I do have (mind you I agree with the light passing through too many elements) is that f4 does make you use a higher ISO and digital noise looks crap - but film grain adds character. So the f4 is def a lens ill buy to try it out to see how it goes

As a newer photographer, I appreciate hearing varied opinions like yours. Something that would be helpful to me would be seeing examples of bad pictures on expensive lenses versus great ones on cheap lenses. I understand and trust what you say in the video, but it could help me as a photographer to actually see it demonstrated so that I know what to look for in my own photos.

Ken, this lens (5 elements) or older Nikkor-Q (4 elements) for using on Fuji (non-AI mount is OK with adapter, I presume)? There are also "type K" Nikkor 200/4 (transional from non-AI to AI, with AI/AI-S appearance and non-AI mount, have no idea about optics) - are they OK? They also can be had quite cheap.

  • @MyMuschilover

    @MyMuschilover

Alex Adrianov later production Q have same optics as AI, so they are the same optically. I have the Q and it's really good. I imagine the AI has multi coatings and is improvement in IQ over the earlier 200mm, but by not much really. It goes like that for many other lenses of that period. I have done some comparisons and these lenses are close in their performance, so it really boils down to your preferences.

Great video and I love my 200mm f4. I have taken some beautiful, sharp pictures with it and it pisses in the skull of the 70-300 I also have. I also purchased and love the 105mm and the 135mm. The color produced with these lens are outstanding. With my Nikon D3200 the 135mm always seems to be zoomed in for general use. With the 135mm I find myself shooting from the other side of the room. I still love the 135 and looking for situations to use it.

Funny how people have come to expect the flat images of a XX-200 zoom. Look at those super zooms - they turn out some dogs but some amateurs feel they are the end all be all of lenses (and those are pretty freaking expensive well $1000 or so). And your way of presenting that knowledge is just perfect... No BS commercials.. Just friendly advises from an "angry" pro.. Well done. Well done indeed.. Thanks - and keep up inspiring !

I think I understand your point on the elements.. since I spent years in audio... I 'll use an analogy.. I remember hearing about all these products that amp, preamp, equalized, went through some audio correcting electronics, and filters that magically improved the signal... At the end if the day... a direct connection to the source with the minimalist approach always gave a better reproduction of the signal..... by far! Of course, the way the electronics were executed that were in the signal path are critical to maximize output... or the quality of the sound. In photography, the fewer high quality elements, the less resulting manipulation and the closer you get to the source,,, or subject....I'm all in... great video!

If it doesn't have the aperture coupling ring, it's not really compatible, you end up having to set up everything manually because it won't meter with it, and you would have to use an external meter, might be better to have a D7100, more lens compatibility.

HELP! I bought the nikon 200mm 1.4 because of your recommendations. I am new to photography, and I can't seem to get it to work like the others. Do I have to do something special in order to run it? I put it on auto and it wouldn't take any pictures. I put it in manual and it only takes fuzzy pictures or black. I really trust your knowledge with this. Can you please help me?

+Theoria Apophasis I have a d7000. This was my first manual lens. After I got it figured out, I was able to take some great pictures. My instructor has this lens and told me it is a great lens as well. Thanks for sharing this information.

okay Ken, so I think I might have made a ton of mistakes in my desire to get it right. First, I am new to photography. I bought a d7200 body only, then got myself a nikon 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3g ED VR auto focus S DX, and nikon 50mm f/1.4G SIC SW. prime af-s, thinking I had done really well. After finding your videos I am not sure at all. I started watching your must have videos. picked up the 35mm f/1.8G af-s DX lens. I still need a speed light (recommendations? ) I want to do macro and wildlife/Landscape. What lenses to I need to get?

Have you tried the 200 mm f4 micro Ais?? I love my 60 afD, but for some subjects the 200mm would be useful. Thanks

Is there a lens with a longer focal length than 200mm that you can recommend for a good price? I currently have the Nikon 55-200mm f4-5.6G ED AF-S. I've been interested in testing the waters with bird photography.

I like shooting airshows. Telephoto zooms are useful for framing aircraft at varying distances from the same spot. FWIW, I've used both the Nikkor 80 - 200 mm AF-D and the Nikkor 70-300 mm VR G. I admit I envying Canon shooters because of the Canon EF 100 - 400 mm zoom. That focal length range would be near ideal. Thanks for your passion for great lenses!

I don't know if you have done a video like what I am suggesting but, maybe you could do a video suggesting a old version which beats the newer version - you have the 135 and the 200 - are their any other ai lenses that do better than the modern equivalent.

I ordered a 135mm f/2 AI-S (vs the 2.8) to extend its use in poor ambient light. I also literally just bought a near mint 200mm f/4 out of Japan for $67 shipped. I don't even have a set purpose for it, but I figure it is so cheap, why not add it to my collection and see what comes out of it! Thanks for all of the great recommendations!

Good to hear this is recommended. I picked this lens up at a vintage camera show for $100cdn a few months ago. On test, read the expiry on a license plate from 1/4 mile away pixel-peeped on a D800

Thank you for your contribution in educating those of us who really want to learn AND save money on photo gear. If you haven't done so yet, can you please someday discuss and review your recommendation of older Nikkor lenses suitable for use on the latest Sony NEX camera bodies (e.g. Alpha series). Thank you once again. Andre' C.
