ANGRY Homeowner CONFRONTS Me While Mowing this VACANT Home

This was an encounter that I have never experienced before. I came across this super overgrown lawn while driving around with my wife, so I decided to knock on the door. Everything about this house looked like it was abandoned. There were broken windows, the grass and weeds were extremely overgrown, and there was a padlock on the door. I knocked anyway to make sure and there was no answer.
After this, I decided to knock on a few of the neighbors doors to get some more information about the house. Every single one of them told me it was vacant and have never seen anyone there in years.
So, I went back the next day and cleaned up the sidewalks and lawn to make the neighborhood look better. In the middle of blowing a sidewalk off, the owner of the home showed up and he was not happy...

I am not from the USA and I have a question. Why do so many properties get abandoned or neglected like this? If the owners are not going to live in it, renovate it and/or rent it out, why don’t they sell? It is sad to see places that were habitable just go to wrack and ruin. We have a housing shortage where I live and any house is snapped up when it goes on the market. In whatever state if disrepair, people will buy it and renovate to live in. Thanks for doing such a great job to keep neighbourhoods tidy. ❤

From someone who does live in the US the economy is about to crash. No one really had money and the few who do aren't spending it on repairing random houses because they're too busy buying gold toilets or whatever the wealthy do so their wealth never leaves their own family. The median home price is currently about $450,000 (I don't know where you are or I'd put in the convertion but that's an almost unattainable amount of money for the dwindling middle class and completely unattainable for everyone else) for like 2 bedrooms and a bathroom. A property like this would still sell for $2-300,000 and then you'd have to spend another couple hundred thousand repairing it and there's no guarentee it would turn out right and even if it does you've not spend $500,000 and you don't have any money for furniture or basic nessesities. Most people don't even make $100,000 in a whole year. My husband for instance is considered "well paid" and makes half that and were still living paycheck to paycheck and have no ability to save any money. We're the average situation for the most part. People like us don't even day dream about owning a home let alone fixing one up, it's just impossible with the money we have. Then there's the people that do still live in houses like this. Because of how high the cost of living is literally everywhere in the US people can't always afford to keep up. If they don't know how to handle cutting the trees and bushes themselves they can't afford to pay someone else to do it. Or of their lawnmower breaks it could be months before they have the money saved up to either fix it or buy a new one. It's called being "house poor" which just means you actually have a house and now you're broke most of the time because you're shoveling most of your income into the house and what little you aren't is going directly to feeding yourself and your family. People like that often have multiple jobs as well so when you've worked 16 hours that day you don't really want to come home and mow the lawn and cut the bushes and everything and if you actually have the same days off for both jobs most people would rather sleep in. Basically the situation is really really bad here financially and it's starting to show up in places you don't always think it would. If you go to any city there's often whole neighborhoods that look like this or worse and every house is occupied and lived in every day. SB just manages to find actually abandoned properties for the most part it seems

It doesn't help that mortgage lenders are super picky. I was looking to buy a 70k house. I had a 750 credit score and a co-signer and I was turned down by every single major mortgage company. I could have had 70k in cash and they would have said no. People paying 2000 a month in rent are turned down for 500 a month mortgages. In the end, I found a local bank and a local home insurance place. They can't afford to be picky since they don't do the same volume as the bigger companies.

A little advice from a fellow gardener: When you work with your shovel, your back is bent the entire time. This will lead to lasting back-problems. Either get a longer handle for your shovel or work with bent knees instead of a bent back. Knees are joints supposed to bend but the back is (compared to a joint) a fairly unmovable column and problems are guaranteed if you don't look out for this as early in your work-life as possible. When you are missing the pushing power the bent back is giving you simply use your thigh as a leverage point. Oh, and use a strap to hold the edge-trimmer on a harness - again, to protect your back on the long term. Keep up the great work = )

@Tim Cooper Having snow built up around your gas meter can cause problems if the snow freezes around the meter and forms ice. The ice increases pressure on the gas lines and gas meter and there are cases where this has caused damage to the meter. So energy companies always recommend you keep the snow cleared from around your gas meter and any gas lines that are above ground.

Business idea? Where’s the income?
I'm so glad the homeowner decided to talk to you instead of staying upset. You probably saved him thousands of dollars in property fines.
Great work it looks a thousand times better! I'm sure that guy is very happy to get it done. You helped him out and the neighborhood as well.
Sometimes when we get old and overwhelmed, when everyone before us has passed we don’t have the strength or the energy to keep up with it anymore, and we sit in our comfort zone thank God for SB and people like him

I'm more - keep off my property w/o permission if you you don't enjoy trespass charges and police called on you.

@@stevealexander8010 he could have called the police on the guy working but why cut his nose off to spite his own face? Now maybe owner will sell while the property looks nice and that works for everybody?

@@stevealexander8010 I mean, if you leave your property to be overgrown, your house falling apart, and half your neighbors have never even seen you, what do you expect? Your willing to pay the taxes for this property property that your otherwise ignoring, but you’re mad at someone trimming the yard for free?

I don’t think the man was mad. Just concerned that someone was on his property. I’m sure he has many memories in his Grandmothers house. Makes it hard to part with it if you have a sentimental bones in you. Perhaps there was too much work needing to be done to sell it. No one knows the true meanings why people let houses sit. I would have to say that whatever this young man is making on his videos. Kudos to you!! Your heart is in the right place and you are working your butt off. Hoping you did not poison ivy. You are awesome. Don’t listen to anything the haters say.
I’m so thankful you were there to help that man with his mother’s yard. The world needs more kindness like this.
