Actually, this was not a single take. It's obvious in at least 4 different places. But to be fair, Whitney almost certainly didn't sing her original studio version in a single take, either.

But the sound could definitely have been cut and synchronized. But I guess this is quite normal like you said, in studio at least...

I hope she stays true to herself and not try to copy the black artists of today who do all sorts of scale things with their voices in a song. This girl can do it unforced, in a natural way without trying. The most beautiful voice singing 30s & 40s sultry songs. Just a gorgeous girl.

Maybe not perfect, but one of the best, probably the best version of the song I've ever heard. Angelina will be one of the greatest legends in music history.

We fans do forgive a twelve year old Angelina for not achieving technical perfection. She put forth and outstanding and remarkable effort that should earn nothing but our respect.

Thank you for your honest analysis. I agree that in this performance she is not 100 % of what Whitney did when she was 29. But remembering that this is a tribute to Whitney and the fact that she is 12 years old and her strength is in the lower register, I find this performance to be quite remarkable. I agree with you that I would love to hear her perform this again in the future, and in the meantime I will just conclude that she is a world treasure who makes my day better every time I hear her sing.

She does a cover like no one else on the planet. She re-writes and/or re-arranges every song she sings to give it that "Angelina Touch". She knows the exact formula of how much she needs to "Angelina-ize" her voice, tone, inflection, emotion, persona and volume with different proportions to perfectly fit every song she sings! She has mastered the art of making her version of a song unique, yet showing complete respect for the Original.

I like that as you sayed it was not 100% and i am sure that Angelina knew it as well. This shows that she is not afreid of showing the world that this girl are still developing and she ask the fans to spread it out to the whole world.

Thank you for a very fair critique of Angelina's performance of this song. As others have commented, it has been suggested that she sang this in response to some comments that she was unable to "belt" a song or reach the higher notes. That she did both would have put such comments to rest. I appreciate the fact that you were not comparing Angelina to Whitney but just concentrating upon how you heard Angelina's performance. If all of the 503 Reactors who react to Angelina did this, instead of making false comparisons or trite remarks, I would be a much happier "geriatric" :-)

Surely, the four who thumbs-downed this must be merely jealous. All others just have to love her. You just must love this young lady of such tremendously blessed vocal talent!

To be honest, I absolutely love Angelina. But I feel she already did what she needed to do with this song and I don't care if she never sings it again. AJ is not this type of singer and I am SOO allright with that. I think it's good that she did this once to honor Whitney and show the doubters what she could do, but this song is so over the top that the vocal pyrotechnics always get in the way of the emotional communication. To me, the greatest thing about listening to Angelina sing a song isn't that it makes you think 'Listen to what she can do with her voice.' It's that she astounds you at what she can make you FEEL by singing the song.

I couldn't agree more. I'm Norwegian, as is Angelina, and I've been aware of her since she was 5. There are quite many singers out there with great voices, and there is no doubt that Angelina belongs to the top 1 % of singers, but when it comes to the way she communicates the songs, with her own take on them, she in a league of her own. I just can't imagine where she'll be as an artist in 10 years from now.

Thank you for staying honest in your reactions. I find it absolutely remarkable that a 13 year old that is entirely herself but can sometimes remind me of Norah Jones, Amy Winehouse and Billie Holiday can do justice to this iconic Whitney Houston song. Those are all great artist, but one can hardly imagine any of them doing Whitney in the style of Whitney. Angelina Jordan’s range and versatility is astonishing, as is her emotional intelligence when she angelizes her covers and tributes. Here Angelina yet again shows what she CAN do, although for once it is not as effortless as almost all her other performances. Of course it isn’t! It a beast of a song, and as you tactfully hint to, Whitney herself struggled with it when she wasn’t at her very best. (PS: I see some commenters in this thread saying that Angelina was a little flat on some of the highest tones. I don’t have perfect pitch, but still to my musician’s ear that is not correct. She hits them highest of the high notes too - but not quite with her usual technique, superb breath support and rich tone. Which is entirely understandable!)

I am convinced that AJA, "nomen omen", will be the soundtrack of humanity in the coming decades. Here it is like seeing a student compete in the 100 meters with Usain Bolt in top form and not getting that far. It seems that this exhibition was also aimed at those who said that he did not know how to go high. Angelina goes as high or low as she pleases, she goes from jaz to disco, from soul to country as she pleases. Artists of this caliber are born one in a century. We were lucky enough to see her evolve live, whoever comes after will study her at the conservatory.

Very fair comments. I'd love to hear her redo this with a live backing band. Looking forward to originals written by her or for her. I would imagine she has an extemely long line of songwriters at her door.

Agree with your comments. Have seen Angelina in the recording studio listening to the song being played back. So she could have gone back and sung it again or had it tweeked but she has not. Still it was very well done for her age. I know you are a pianist . Have you listened to rehersal singing wishing upon a star. No microphone just her and the piano sounds lovely.. There is background noise because they are getting the stage ready for the concert. Keep going with your AJ reactions

I agree with you when you put stress on de fact she was 12 when recorded this video, and the goddess Whitney was 29 when she first performed I have nothing as a part of O.S.T. of "The bodyguard" film. We barely can require Angelina to be Houston instead of Jordan. She's been (and she still is) in a huge work during the last 8 years and we must respect it. Almost 150 amazing covers putting up her "Jordan Signature" on them , and her "Jordan DNA" in some originals , is a big outstanding baggage for a kid/young teen. This said, we know how selfdemanding Angelina is in her job. So I understand the authentic musical reactors that honestly and technicaly analize hundreds of performances, must point their comments on what they consider honest and fair. Nobody can complain when this happens. I'm sure Angelina appreciates this the same way she does when she receives all the big love we send to her. She just did a concert in Norway 2 wks. ago and she sang that song I have nothing and it was superb. She is now 16. React to that performance cause it will just blow your mind. Thank you. I'm just a die-hard fan man.

I love this performance & to me it sounds great, but voice coaches have had the same criticism as you. That's why I've never requested this song to a reviewer. But just for comparison, I would like to have seen Whitney sing this at 29, in her prime, at home singing to a backing track, in 1 take. During this Pandemic lock-down, I have seen so many famous vocalists do home concerts, like Angelina does all the time, & she is better than most IMHO. Gladys, from Talent Development Coaching, who I have great respect for, said of Angelina, "There are so many famous people, but they don't come close to the talent that this girl has. Musically speaking, her voice, her ideas, the sense of her arrangements, etc, she is very good & I like her a lot." This says it all from professionals whose job it is to find new talent.

She has actually performed this song in one event with David Foster. So I assumed if it's not 100% here she must already have perfected it by then. Sad we don't have a video or audio of that said performance.

It's not really ever going to be different. Whitney at 12 was amazing too. They just didn't have KZread then. But my point is that AJ is deeper, vocally, raspy and growly but with a lovely smooth mix voice. Whitney was crisper and clearer and higher up range-wise. Whitney would struggle to do a lot of the stuff AJ can do too. They're just different types of singers. Both of them are the very best at their own type of thing though.

You cannot sing true with head voice because you have no cords to modulate from head... Athough I have seen this many times, for some reason I was nervous as you were but to see your reaction, lol. Such an unexpected side of Angelina, right? There are lots of people out there that are not aware of the range she has: from a beautiful, warm, round lower register, to this clear, strong chest voice! I totally agree with you there was a note here and there in the final chorus that was a little off but overall it's quite the accomplishment. Specially as she has wanted to sing Whitney since she was a year and half... yes, there's a very short clip of her at that age attempting to sing a Whitney song. Imagine how proud Angelina must have felt when she finally could get this close to covering her idol ♥

First time I heard this I was quite critical. I totally agree with all of your inputs and questioning on this song. But as with most of ANGELina's covers, it gets better with every listen... shrugs, that's my honest opinion. I went on and I listenend to some of the fanmade montages and some voice teachers comparing Whitney and ANGELina. Keep in mind Whitney's version is the studio one, and ANGELina does this live and the fact she's 12, compared to Whitney's 29.... and this type of song is not what ANGELina normally sings, so another challenge. ;) Anyways, prolly repeating what's been pointed out several times. LeNa, you say it so well. First time for me, it wasnt perfect either, but hey, after listening to it another 6.479 times, it has become very near perfect. For me. This is done in one take, and it is spectacular for a 12 year old. For any age.
