It feels wrong to have them balanced. You -can- change magic fundamentally, do something similar to the spellcaster being able to just do tiny luck based things, for example, but if you want flashy magic (fireball et al) it is, if not unavoidable, very difficult to justify balance.

Well Licenseless Rider is inspiring for the morales so he kinda had the post-serum but pre-superhero Capitan America role (when he sold war bonds, which is positively contributing to the effort). I mean, this isn't huge, but at least it's a positive function. BMX bandit here is just a deadweight who complains about his feelings being hurt and gets him killed in a stupid way while jeopardizing the mission. If Licenseless Rider dies trying to fight, I'd shed tears. For the BMX bandit, I'd want to reduce the punishment for whoever killed him.

I mean that is a pretty OP power. It's like when you watch an Avengers film or an ensemble super hero movie, like the most recent Suicide Squad, and there's that one disgustingly OP character in the group, that when they get introduced and explain their power, you start wondering? When ever is there a real threat for this person? And then at the end, I was right the person who was clearly OP-ed ended up saving the day. Though in the example I'm thinking of, they didn't sell that person as OP but if you logic it out, clearly saw they were. Like in The Suicide Squad James Gunn version, really there wasn't ever a threat you have a person who can do what this character does and it doesn't matter the casualties.

As someone who plays mainly fighters in D&D I relate to the BMX bandit. Anecdote: My mates and I was playing a high level game, we were fighting to reach a BBEG in his fortress filled with evil Duergar and Drow. As me and the other fighter, and the paladin make ready to charge, the sorcerer and wizard says “Oi, we got this.” And proceeds to cast two meteor swarms consecutively on top of the enemy fortress. The DM laughed and ripped out what looked like ten pages of content from his notebook and said “Having dealt with the bulk of the enemy fortress. You find a trap door leading into the undercroft”

Ah, moon druids. The very least balanced basic sourcebook subclass in 5th-edition by far, at earlier levels. I guess he was a variant human, too? Allowing access to a feat that would grant the familiar. Borrowing the psuedodragon option for a familiar from warlock pact of chain is a bit cheeky though. A druid isn't meant to have access to that. DM was asleep? That or just overly generous. That's still a bit shit to tell you to hang back though. You still could've waded in and done damage. It's such a basic DMing thing to allow the players to have a part in battle as often as possible. Doesn't sound like a great group honestly. My first time in D&D I played a chaotic-stupid barbarian gnome princess who thought trying to smash through a stone wall... a *cursed* stone wall... with a chain whip, was a *good* idea. I was super dumb, and my weapon broke, of course it did. The DM still, after enough are-you-sures, let me do it. Still found a way to get me another weapon before the next fight, and I still joined in with that fight. That's how it's done. You bend over backwards to include your players, that's what you're there for. Enormous power imbalance between players is imo best nipped in the bud and said "no" to before it even happens, but if you've messed up and let it happen anyway, there are still plenty of ways to make up the difference. Give the underpowered ones some magic items that only work on their race or class. Give the overpowered ones a powerful enemy with a particular grudge against them specifically, or enemies that particularly go against their playstyle. Put a magical barrier between party members at the start of a fight. I mean these are not ideal things to do, but it's better than having players think they're just watching the game. Plenty of ways around it. Or... in the case of a moon druid, just level everyone up very quickly! They really lose momentum as the levels scale up. By about level 5 or 6, they're on par with anyone and from then-on, gradually get a bit underpowered. That's not a super-high level to get your players to, and you can do it whenever you want. Have some wizard mess around with time and zap them to the future if it needs to be immediate. Have the party inadvertently take credit for an adventure some other in-game adventuring group actually did the work on. Again, plenty of options. DMs ought to be a lot more creative against such pitfalls. Hope you didn't give up on it just from that one game?

@@Torthrodhel DM was EXTREMELY generous haha. The game was marketed to me, as a new player, as a taster of how DnD works and what its like to progress as a player. Therefore the DM was happy for our talented friend to deal tons of damage in combat. To be fair, it was cool as a new player to see what sort of damage and cool abilities could be unlocked. Also helped me understand combat mechanics.
