He’s usually rapping while playing the drums, so this is a cakewalk for Anderson. If you haven’t seen his Grub Hub concert, I would highly recommend.

They talk in interviews about how they came together. APaak was opening for Bruno’s 24Karat Magic tour in 2017. They started hangin & talkin 70’s inspiration, started messin around songwriting & was beginning of Smokin Out the Window. On Paak’s bz’dsy during pandemic shutdown, Bruno called Andy up, inviting him to finish the song, & rest is history.

As for how this ended up working so well, it brings to mind the Anderson Paak lyric in the song, "The Bird", that says, "I learned my lessons from the ancient roots; I choose to follow what the greatest do"... and essentially, here we are with two old musical souls who pretty much decided 'build it, and they will come'. Always remember these are two MUSICIANS devoted to preserving the craft of musical culture...they are musical beasts who literally only have access to the best of the best, in talent, in resources, and also from within themselves. They toured together before and enjoyed playing together and decided to do this project- there was no way that two artists of this caliber with the level of respect they have for the art were not going to blow the world up with this thing- and then there's also the fact that the world is in such a weary place right now. We are fatigued of superficiality, violence, hate, and plague, and people want to escape that toxicity and feel good. We are tired of mediocrity. We want excellence, we want to dance, we want to love and make love, and we want to laugh and feel joy again. So this project is hitting at JUST the right time for where we're at, collectively.❤

Stevie in 2017 Bruno said to Anderson that they should get together one day. So five yrs ago they started working one of the song on the album. I'm not sure which one Leave the Door Open or Smoking Out The Window. It was in the works for quite awhile .

You need to know more about Anderson ….Anderson opened for Bruno five years ago and while on tour they played around writing songs… years later Bruno called Anderson to come finish that song. I think finished product is Put on a smile. Anderson is a master drummer funk is in his bone marrow… go watch Anderson Paak and the Free Nationals on NPR tiny desk concerts…
