I'm not a pilot, but in my profession, any software that is responsible for critical actions doesn't allow info to be carried over. You enter the info and run the operation, then all of the input data clears. It forces you to re-enter all of the data. The BLT software should operate like this in my opinion.

I’ve been waiting for you to do this. I joined MK about 18 months after this happened. Commercial pressures were there then, and remained until the end. Asking crews to do 14+ hr days was the norm to keep the show on the road. ‘It’s gotta go' was the mentality from the commercial dept, crews regularly ran into 'captain's discretion' on duty times. This accident could have been avoided, but from what I experienced, from the way the place was run, it was a matter of 'when', not 'if'. The crews, ops, engineering and crewing had some really good people - but when £ and $ comes before all else, it’s a recipe for tragedy. 😔

I wonder if they decided to use ° 20 flaps for the incorrect take off weight or for the correct take off weight. The °20 seems accurate for the real take off weight not for the weight they had in the FMC (incorrect take off weight for this departure as they were much heavier).

Airlines are rarely secure economically for a number of reasons beyond their control. The cost of fuel is a huge determining factor. Also, the grounding of certain planes with technical problems can wreak havoc. Add in the Wuhan virus, and profits evaporate. These pressures can cause reckless behavior.

They would have stopped flying into china, they would have stopped shipping things to china, they would have stopped buying things from china, just to teach them a lesson that you don't mess with the world. But, China is so much the center of everyone's universe because they have bought their way into every market with cheap labor, that you need them for your medicine, you need them for half the stuff you put on your table, for half the things you used to wipe your rear end, that's just the people we are in bed with now. This country's were smart, they would start pulling their manufacturing out of China and put them back in their respective countries so that way they can tell China to pound sand. all i would ask is a bit more care with captioning. concepts understandable to the aviation community, but not the lay viewer, are occasionally left unexplained (eg: the open vs dump position on speed brakes [East Coast Jets 81] ). then again there are small errors in syntax or word choice (at least in earlier vids) hinting that TFC is not a native English speaker. however, these things do not detract much from the informative and absorbing aspects of the vids. most all information relays vividly and succinctly. i find less need to replay written captions than spoken narration. and there are knowledgeable commenters available to explain and elucidate.

I remember this being big news where I live as the flight originated at BDL, the main international airport. The MK Boeing 747 came in daily, loading up pharmaceutical supplies and Honda lawn tractors before heading up to Halifax to pick up the seafood. After the crash, a replacement 747 still in Korean Airlines markings was used. Eventually the airline folded and shippers chartered AN-124’s to carry the loads on that route.

The main mistake was not the miscalculation of the weight. The main mistake was that when they noticed that they couldn't get the plane airborne and hit the ground with the tail, the should have abandoned the take off. The tail damage should have been checked by technicians, and after this they should figure out what had gone wrong and they couldn't take off.

The only other runway overruns on takeoff I know of are emirates flight 764, 407 and 231. tbh, when I first saw and watched the first intro of the video I thought it was going to be a survivable takeoff overrun with no fatalities (like the flights above) and the aircraft would then return for an emergency landing. It then hit me when I read through wikipedia and some articles (along with this video) that there were no survivors. R.I.P. Incredibly detailed video!

A layman's point of view...you would think that a flight crew with that much 747 experience would have had a good idea of the plane's weight and the necessary settings even without updated software..they knew what they were carrying and how much fuel was onboard; the ground engineer signed for it...and that 92% thrust wasn't going to cut it on an 8,800 foot runway with a 775,000 pound aircraft. They should have been instantly aware of the sluggishness at 92% and gone to 100% before the plane even reached 80 knots or sensing something wrong, just aborted the takeoff completely. The only 747 I've ever flown is the one on Flight Simulator X and I picked up on it instantly. But like the video said, it's likely pilot fatigue played a major role despite the airlines' denial. Great video as always, Flight Channel.

Think about it this way. There are videos about aeroplane crashes because they are SO unusual. If we did them for car crashes we'd have thousands of videos per day. When a plane goes down, it's world news. If every single retired pilot alive managed an entire career flying without dying a crash, you're pretty safe taking the occasional one.

It's tragic when people with vitally important jobs lose interest through boredom and fatigue, merely going through the motions of certifying the critical safety calculations required to avoid catastrophe. The instant that the tail struck the runway was the time to abort the takeoff. Obviously something is very wrong with the aircraft when the tail strikes asphalt. But they decided to force the takeoff, as if one can do that without serious consequences. That scraping alone would require grounding the plane, inspecting, and repairing it. Fine job of graphics. Thank God this wasn't a passenger plane.

Crew must have been exhausted, there were key mistakes that indicate a lack of awareness consistent with a very fatigued crew. A couple of key points on a 747-200. One is any runway 8800 length takeoff will be an Epr setting a lot higher than 1.33, that powersetting is only for when the airplane is empty and the runway long. Two this is an oceanic flight with a load of cargo! The V1 VR and V2 should be pretty fast, not a leisurely 130 knots. An 8800 runway for a loaded 747 going 6 or 7 hours should be a " max effort" takeoff....All the keys are big if not huge, so one can gather crew exhaustion.

You get zen with the machine. I feel the pilots should have recognized something wasn't right. Perhaps the fatigue was a factor, but as somebody else posted in another comment, the laptop should clear all data fields before entering new data to calculate the V speeds. Also, when loaded heavy, why don't pilots just use full thrust? I mean I know it was cold air, but still.

Yeah it seems odd to even rely on perfection of the calculations when the runway is short and the pilots know the plane is loaded heavy. Probably saves some fuel/maintenance but it just adds risk for minimal benefit in my opinion. Should be using substantially more thrust than just what's absolutely needed for takeoff unless the runway is exceptionally long. Even if an engine goes down during take off after V1, there's so much more of a margin given if the other engines are already producing near max power vs having to wait for them to spool up after the engine failure.
