Lyrics:
Hear my cry,
In my hungering search for you,
Taste my breath on the wind,
See the sky as it mirrors my colours,
Hints and whispers begin.
I am living to nourish you, cherish you,
I am pulsing the blood in your veins,
Feel the magic and power of surrender,
To life. Uisce Beatha
Every finger is touching and searching,
Until your secrets come out,
In the dance, as it endlessly circles,
I linger close to your mouth.
I am living to nourish you, cherish you,
I am pulsing the blood in your veins,
Feel the magic and power of surrender,
To life. Uisce Beatha
--------------------------------------------------------------------
In 1987 Dublin composer Michael McGlynn founded ANÚNA. The name derives from the collective term for the three ancient types of Celtic music, Suantraí (lullaby), Geantraí (happy song) and Goltraí (lament). One of the choir's stated aims is to explore and redefine this music. Anúna is a Dublin-based a cappella choir that performs with between eleven and fourteen singers. The group is directed by Michael McGlynn and his twin brother John.
Most of the material they perform is written or arranged specifically for the group by Michael McGlynn. He has reconstructed and arranged a substantial amount of medieval Irish music, which has been recorded by the group. McGlynn's choral arrangements are written specifically for their combination of classically trained singers and untrained voices. Anúna do not work with a conductor in performance, and move throughout the venue at different points in concert.
Anúna dispels any pre-conceived ideas about Irish music and choral music performance. An Anúna concert is a true show, a combination of movement, elegant costume, candles and ethereal and haunting music sung in a unique way. This has gained the choir a justified reputation for the quality of the singers natural voices. Together with relaxed introductions by the director and other singers, Anúnas style of presentation allows anyone of any musical persuasion to appreciate their performance despite the esoteric nature of their material.

I went on a residential school trip when I was around 8 or 9 (1995) and the teacher was one of the only people who had a video camcorder thing, he recorded our 3 or 4 days there and put a soundtrack over it all. On the last day he took shots of us all sleeping peacefully, then took some scenery of the beach / bay and had this song playing over the top. It showed us walking up the long hill home, not wanting to leave but also homesick for our parents. It ended the video perfectly. He then sold copies and I bought one. I’ve not watched it in about 20 years and it’s in the attic. I always vaguely remembered a strange & beautiful song but could never google it or find it. I clicked on this by accident and it’s the song! I’ve been sat weeping for 15 minutes with it on repeat. Sweet childhood memories of being truly happy. My heart 💛

One of my earliest memories is the chorus of this song. I remember being two years old in 1995 and watching this on VHS tape. I hold it close to my heart because the entire show inspired me to start Irish dancing, which I am still doing today. :)

I saw this for the first time, while I was alone in 1994. I was Ironing. not one of my favourite things to do. My children in bed ( very young then) Their father was in Bosnië at that time. This music lifted me up. Told me that everything would be okay. It gave me faith and patience. Was so glad with that. This music. And although many life-changes afterwards, I've still warm feelings when I hear this piece of magnificent music which touch te soul.

Classical music professors usually enforce the rules of Gradus ad Parnassum by J. J. Fux - namely, avoid parallel octaves. But here, Bill Whelan shows us what just the right amount of octave doubling can do to the sound. Absolutely incredible.
