In 1987 Dublin composer Michael McGlynn founded ANÚNA. The name derives from the collective term for the three ancient types of Celtic music, Suantraí (lullaby), Geantraí (happy song) and Goltraí (lament). One of the choir's stated aims is to explore and redefine this music. Anúna is a Dublin-based a cappella choir that performs with between eleven and fourteen singers. The group is directed by Michael McGlynn and his twin brother John.
Most of the material they perform is written or arranged specifically for the group by Michael McGlynn. He has reconstructed and arranged a substantial amount of medieval Irish music, which has been recorded by the group. McGlynn's choral arrangements are written specifically for their combination of classically trained singers and untrained voices. Anúna do not work with a conductor in performance, and move throughout the venue at different points in concert.
Anúna dispels any pre-conceived ideas about Irish music and choral music performance. An Anúna concert is a true show, a combination of movement, elegant costume, candles and ethereal and haunting music sung in a unique way. This has gained the choir a justified reputation for the quality of the singers natural voices. Together with relaxed introductions by the director and other singers, Anúnas style of presentation allows anyone of any musical persuasion to appreciate their performance despite the esoteric nature of their material.

the soloist is so adorable. I love her smile and the emotion in her eyes in these performances.

I saw this live, I can hardly believe it was 28 years ago. Still as wonderful as it was then.
This video was part of our curriculum in our Arts in Education program in North Carolina. It was part of the A+ Program that combined Theatre/Music/Art/Dance with English/Math/Science/Sports.....the school was Sadie Saulter Elementary School..
This song, all those years ago, and the musicians of Anuna, sparked my interest in Celtic music. That led me to the broader world of Celtic music, and from there to the American music influenced so strongly by it. That led me to learn about a not-terribly distant cousin in North Carolina, who works to preserve Appalachian music, stories and customs, and thence to a whole huge family of musicians that I'd never known existed. I can't thank you enough!

Far out ... this melody and voice has stayed in my mind since Christmas 96. .. haunting, weird I remeber it to calm myself... so touching.. especially when I am not even culturally related but then again ... most beautiful voice... this show changed my life musically... this singer cured my soul when I found myself isolated and aching in my new world. Thank you people that sang here ...wherever you are during these diffulties days

Heard this for the first time at 8 years old and I've never heard a better version since. Truly the voice of an angel
This has and always will be one of my favourite songs. Kate's voice is pure heaven to listen to. If you read this Kate it has resonated in my head and heart for years. In my own case it reminds me of my own home 18,000 miles away. Brilliantly sung and catches the pictures it communicates exquisitely!

Beautiful.... Katie's voice is stunning - I remember being at the first show on 9th Feb 1995 my parents brought me for my 14th birthday and this was and still is my favourite song from the show. Was magical!
