We're the only nation that has a musical instrument, the Irish harp, as our emblem. It's on our passports and all official documents.

This was, is and probably will be the best ever interlude show in Eurovision, absolute perfection.

You can tell this for two reasons. First of all every host since 1994 has been trying to outdo it. Secondly they have all failed to even come close.

Its crazy. Over 30 yrs later this interval act at eurovision has not been beaten. Still goosebumps. That's the advantage of being old....I saw the world premiere live on TV 🎉🎉

There never will be anything like this ever again when the world first was introduced to Riverdance. It still gives me shivers.

Riverdance to me portrays the beauty and resilience of the Irish people. Their journey in the world has not been easy ❤

Still voted as the number 1 in the world interval act from the Eurovision Song Contest. Spectacular Irish dancing. Riverdance troupes still continue to this day to travel globally and amaze their spectators.

AND to cap it all, Ireland won the Eurovision Song Contest that year too.........what a night 🎉💚

We in the UK and europe were mesmerised! This will never be beaten or forgotten, out of this world talent! All these years later it still makes you jump out of your seat!

😂 at each break in your reaction, I was shouting at the screen “just you WAIT”! I remember watching this live with my mum and dad on television, in an interval in the Eurovision contest. We were transfixed, we’d never seen anything like it before, and we jumped from our seats cheering at the end. I find it emotional and thrilling after nearly 30 years!

Hi Maggie! Although I had lived in Ireland twice previously (Cork and Dublin), I wasn't anywhere near Europe when this aired on TV. HOWEVER, the stage version was shown on our PBS network (American public television), and its popularity in Arizona (not the most Irish part of this country, for sure) was like no reaction to a theatrical production ever seen in this country. People of every background and skin color were amazed. More than Kerrygold, Aran sweaters, St. Patrick, Richard Harris, Peter O'Toole, Sinead O'Connor, Enya, the Cranberries and U2, Riverdance was the undisputed representative of Ireland and the Irish. Everyone in the US who saw it was in awe and they darn well knew what country it came from! Makes me proud (even though I can't stepdance, don't speak Irish, and my cooking skills could mess up a spud)!

I live in Ireland. My daughter did Irish dance for 17 years, the dedication and strength you need to get to this level is crazy. When you see this live the steps feel like they are in your heart, thats the only way I can describe it. Sad to see Gerry Ryan, he was special.

Yeah Irish Riverdance is so very very Irish..its 110 % irish culture .. i am from Sweden but i remember that Saturday in mars 1994 .. I remember all my neighbors as get to the work on Monday morning they danzing Riverdance when they walk to the subway ha ha ha ha ha all in sweden love this Irish Riverdance culture ❤️🇸🇪

I was so sad when I was a child, I wanted to Irish dance so much but I had a really bad memory for remembering stuff on the fly (I still do). I wasn't fast enough at learning the dances so I never got picked for the St. Patrick's day parade or anything. Raging 😂

@@fionamb83That's a pity. As an adult dancer, I just suffer from a lack of self-esteem, which usually means I just suck at competitions, ceili and performances. My teacher has said so many times that I dance so well, but unfortunately it just doesn't come out at the moments it matters. I quit competitions because of it and I usually are just never asked for performances because my teachers knows I don't like it. I'm probably not the best at remembering things as well, but for over a decade I was the only male in class and I thus didn't really have someone to mirror myself to. But it was 'nice' to see how one of the more advanced girls at some point tried to dance along in a ceili and within the first few steps stopped and stepped out with a total brain-meltdown, the same feeling I experienced when I tried it once: a solo Irish dance is already something, trying to also remember where your partners are ánd remembering the steps is just a bit much for me, paired with the fear that's always there that I will mess up.

@@fionamb83Well, very daunting maybe, but most of the people I know seem to have less trouble keeping their nerves in check when awaiting their turn on the stage ;) It has gotten better over the years, but in the beginning, I would get so nervous 6 hours before I was scheduled to go on stage (and as is so common at feiseanna, they always run late) I could not eat or drink anything anymore. The amount of times I went completely blank at the moment I had to start nearly surpasses the amount of fingers found on two hands, on about just as many competitions I attended. When the adjudicator managed to find me during a break at one of the competitions and asked 'I wondered if I could have a word...' I knew where it was going. I finished 2 dances (of the 5 or so) that time and thus she saw that I was well able to do them properly, which she said as an encouragement. But that was the second time that happened to me, an adjudicator coming up to me for a quick word where it was coming from, and that was the moment I decided to 'retire'. What I really dislike the most is waiting for your turn. There you are, on a stage, just awaiting while all other dancers are doing their thing and all you can do is wait... and try to look at some fixed point somewhere in the hall... I guess this is just what years and years of being bullied do to people, even in maturity. I most likely could not cope with sean nós ;) I'm too used to the speed and sharpness of Commission dancing (that my teacher holds a grudge against sean nós in general probably doesn't help ;) )

Dance, song, and music are the universal language. It's a beautiful thing; no matter where you come from you can always find this language that connects us all.

It was a amazing performance and michael ..Jean Butler amazing dancers truly 2 of the greatest dancers

As an Irish person thank you for lovely reaction. I wonder if you have any Irish ancestry yourself as a lot of Irish were sent to the Caribbean by the British government. There are some similarities in our accents. No one mentions the music though. For me it's 50/50 between the music and the dance. So evocative.

Living in Northern Ireland we have got so used to seeing Irish dancing - lovely to watch your reaching for the first time seeing it

I'm irish, and when I saw it, I was in àwe. They made irish dancing sexy ❤

As they dance to the music, you can "see" the river flowing, between, over, around the rocks, picking up speed as it hits a steeper downward slope....

I remember watching this as a teenager in 1994, and being absolutely blown away, as was the whole country! I still get goosebumps. The song went to number 1 in the charts for weeks, and the show of Riverdance was a sell out all around the world. Jean Butler started this dance in soft shoes, called Poms. Her style at the start is the traditional style of dancing. Irish American Micheal Flatley then brought a modern twist on the dance. When she rejoined him, she had her hard shoes on then. I remember doing Irish dancing as a child, and you’d start on Poms before working up to the hard shoes! Still very very popular here in Ireland, and is deeply rooted in our tradition.

Yep, I still have my poms somewhere, even though I didn't do Irish dancing for longer than a year (broke my ankle badly slipping on ice) big regret that I didn't come back to it but still, couldn't be helped. This stirs my soul in a way I can't explain and brings tears to my eyes even now, 30yrs later. I still remember the feelings and seeing my dad weep with pride and my mammy speechless, which NEVER happened lol. Great memories

This was one of our proudest moments to be irish and today I still get the same high Glad you loved it

I have a half Irish mother and lots of Irish on my dad's side too, and watching this stirs something in your soul which makes you feel so proud to be a little part of it, even if it's only by blood (I'm English) Me and my gran used to sit and watch this time and time again when I was a teen, and every time I saw it, it really stirred me up.

Same here my friend. I`m a born and bred Brit too but my Maternal Grandmother was born in Ireland and when I see Irish dancing as good as this or listen to some good Irish music, like you say it stirs something inside. A few years ago, my Sister took me to see Clannad at The Liverpool Philharmonic as a Xmas present. We were right down at the front and it was just Magical, the entire performance was amazing.

Only one dancer born outside Ireland (flatley) and he was born into a fully Irish American family. 6 of the main troupe are from limerick Dane’s club alone. The rest are from Sligo, Kerry, Dublin cork and Tipperary. The composers and musicians are all Irish too. You sad, sad little Englishman. Go back to your tabloid garbage and stop being jealous. Not our fault you have nothing to equal it in British culture

@georgebarnes8163 it is still Irish traditional dancing. Our Irish diaspora have continued to practice it and it is more popular today than ever. What is unique about it is not only the tapping and high kicking but also the fact that they stand very straight with arms by their sides. Check out Irish traditional dances such as hornpipes, reels, 4 hand reels etc , 8 hand reels etc. This dance is a mixture of soft shoe dancing and hornpipe shoe dancing which their steel toe caps produces the tapping sound. Other similar spectacular Irish dancing shows include' Lord of the dance ' which was choreographed and produced by 3M shows

Not long before Jean Butler went on stage her dress ripped but the dressmaker did an amazing job to get her out on time. Michael Flatly is the Guinness World record holder for 35 taps per second. I saw it live a few years ago. Brilliant show.

I never seen this. Awesome. My first exposure to Riverdance was when PBS featured them during one of their fundraisers. I think it was in 1995. I saw a live performance of Lord of the Dance in the late 90s.

It blew my mind the 1st time watching this & it continues to do so. Just can't stop grinning, it really just makes you smile.

Decades after seeing Riverdance for the first time I still get emotional watching this clip. Your reaction was simply brilliant...you exhibited the pure joy that beautiful traditional music and dance can bring to all of us. 💖💖💖

I had the opportunity to see the original Riverdance stage show when it came to Los Angelas back in the 1990's. I will never forget it for as long as I live. How fun it was to see it again.

It became an ever changing magnificent two hour show that still has productions every where on the planet!!! It’s also on DVD. This is based on traditional Irish dancing.

Still get chills watching it saw it when it came out that evening ❤from Ireland so proud of our dancers

Elegance, grace, delicate yet we see strength, endurance, and percussion. Such an amazing dichotomy! I've wanted to learn this dance all my life, even before I learn of my Irish roots.

Seeing the finale of Riverdance always brings tears of joy in my eyes! 😍

I saw the tour & it was absolutely exhilarating. It was basically the evolution of Irish dance (and it’s cultural meaning) throughout history, as it absorbed influences from the various nations that occupied the land, as well as the new experiences of those that left to go to America. I had goosebumps for the majority of the show. I’m certain there are videos of the original Riverdance production that you can watch in full floating around YT. You wouldn’t regret it😊

Sooo proud to be Irish, I’ll never forget this it was groundbreaking because before this, the rules in Irish dancing was that your top half could never know what your bottom half was doing- meaning, you were not supposed to move your arms, they were supposed to be straight and ridged beside your body while your legs were absolutely flying it, in this breakthrough performance they moved their arms and it was shocking and fantastic at the same time, a true revolution in Irish dancing and we LOVED IT

The world was blown away by it - no one had seen anything quite so ethereal before - and your unbridled joy as you watched really echoed those original sentiments. You really should treat yourself the the whole theatre production of Riverdance that was developed after they won eurovision. It's wonderful. It is still performed today more than 20 Years or so later!

This was so much fun watching you react the way I felt the first time I saw River Dance.

It is certainly - SOMETHING ELSE. A thousand WOWS!!! Great to see again after some 30 years. I was in Ireland right down in the sou'west some 20 years ago and the people (and the coastal scenery) are lovely just so welcoming. Thank you Island girl. Keep 'em a coming.
