This is a national dance performed around the country. The format has two styles, 'soft-shoe and hard shoe' the first dance was soft-shoe, thereafter hard-shoe. There is also another Irish tradition called 'set-dancing'. Fun Fact - American clogging from of dance is derived from hard shoe Irish dancing

Probably true ;) I saw the Military Tattoo in Edinbrough in 1999 when I was on vacation there with my parents. I was only 11 years old, but Irish dance had always stuck with me since the day I saw it for the first time: wanted to learn it ever since, but yeah, being Dutch, that was hard in the nineties. I can still remember how excited I was that Irish dancers grazed the arena at that Tattoo in 1999. My uncle, who was there as well, videotaped a few things, including the Highland and Irish dancers. Over the years I started to question my memory (as a few other broadcasts of the Tattoo I saw never featured Irish dancers). Than my uncle died and my dad went through all the pictures, videos and everything else my uncle had gathered over the years and eventually he got to the 'Holiday Scotland 1999' DVD. I came down when I saw him watching the Highland dancers, which really got me questioning my memories. Than, right in the middle of the performance, the scene was cut and the Irish dancers appeared. Till this day the Irish dancers are basically the only thing I remember of the Tattoo.

This is not tap dancing, it is Irish step dancing. This is where tap dancing came from as I understand it. The shoes are hard or heavy shoes not tap shoes. Irish dancing is competitive and every one of those dancers is a champion. Jean Butler's first dance was done in soft or light shoes.

Lots of love from Ireland. I learned this dance form at home starting roughly 1986 at 3.5 years then by 1987 I was in step dancing school. In those times Irish step dancing was a style limited to broadly speaking the UK, Ireland and some places in the USA with strong Irish communities. Then 1994 came, River dance happened and now you could learn to step dance perhaps as far away as Taiwan. Riverdance immortalised Irish dancing transcending it beyond mere nationality to become what is today an International community and dance style.

Irish dancing predates tap dancing. Riverdance gave traditional Irish dancing a modern twist. Those high kicks and heel flicks were part of traditional dancing even when I was young waayyyy back in the last century …and you had to be able to do them from a standstill. One of the most modern twists was Michael Flatley moving his arms.

I remember this so well I was home from Boston to Ireland visiting family and we had gone to a local hotel bar just to have a few drinks and the Eurovision happened to be on. No one paying any attention until this came on and then gradually the bar went quiet while the performance got going and just peoples jaws dropping by the end. And as you said it was just the "halftime show" and not even part of the competition.

This is Celtic "step dancing" ... it has its roots in traditional Irish dancing that originated hundreds of years ago (15th Century).....where only the legs and feet move in flat down technique. It is not "tap dancing", which is relatively new (19th Century). Tap dancing originated in the United States through the fusion of several ethnic percussive dances, primarily West African sacred and secular step dances (gioube) and Scottish, Irish, and English clog dances, hornpipes, and jigs. Hope that help you understand our traditional dancing (I am Irish).... glad you enjoyed River Dance.

This changed everything about Irish Dance, it brought a vigour the likes of never seen before by Irish Dancing. But that is not in any way a denigration of the past of Irish Dance, it was just time, and as it turned out, the right time for Irish Dance to grow, and this new lot of Dance practitioners found a new home for this new Irish Dance style, The World! It's not often you see the the show support act eclipse, by far, the original show and all it was meant to be about, for goodness’ sake, Those Irish Dancers blew away EuroVision Song Quest, I've never seen that done by anyone anywhere in the history of music and Dance, and it was a great thing it happened, because it gave us a chance to look at the birth of a new form of Irish Dance! Amazing!

My father comes from a region of Canada where most people are descended from Scottish and Irish immigrants, and the local style of dance us called Cape Breton stepdancing, which descends from Scottish stepdancing, and is closely related to the Irish stepdancing seen here. I grew up with Scottish and Irish music, but kind of fell out of it as I got older because most Celtic music is very traditional, and I'm just not a very traditional person. As an adult I moved to a city in Canada on the opposite coast from where my father grew up. A city with a large Punjabi immigrant population. At a local festival, I saw a local band called "Delhi 2 Dublin" perform. They combined Irish and Punjabi musical influences together, as well as other influences like electronica, funk, and reggae. It reignited my interest in Celtic music. I started seeking out music that remixed and combined the music of my roots with other things, taking it in an innovative direction instead of a traditional one. I even started experimenting with making my own music.

I have Irish heritage and children often begin learning step dance at an early age, but it’s certainly possible to begin as a teenager or older if you have another type of dance background, especially tap. There are special shoes for step dance and they have metal taps on the heels as well as the toes. Our godson and his sister both took step dance starting around age ten and continued until they graduated high and went to college. They danced competitively and won some awards. The synchronization required really takes a lot of practice.

In traditional Irish step dancing, the arms are not moved at all. After Ireland became Catholic, the Church forbade the traditional arm movements that were part of the dance, saying they were too erotic and an invitation to sin. It makes me really want to know what those arm movements were. 😁 In the American South (east) particularly in mountainous areas, there is a traditional dance, also done with taps on the shoes, called “clogging”. It is descended from the step dancing (like in the video) brought by Scottish and Scots-Irish immigrants to the US in the 18th century. I love the singers at the beginning. Those traditional harmonies are just extraordinary. If you like it too, I recommend a group called Clannad. To me, the traditional Irish wind instruments sound somewhat like ones I’ve heard in some Indian and Middle Eastern music. I get goosebumps and tears in my eyes every time I watch this.

I am from Tennessee USA. Our dances are derived from the melting pot of immigrants that came to this area back in the 1700-1800s. We have a lot of Irish and Scottish influence. But the Square-Dance is very popular

I know you thought it was Tap but it is not that is actually part of Irish dancing but they just invigorated it and brought it back to life. As children back in the 70's and 80's we all had to learn Irish dancing and the most important thing was that we were all in step. It brought tears to my eyes when they did this dance as it brought it to life for other countries and it has been watched across the world now for years.

Hi, thank you for sharing! To answer your question: I'm originally from Hungary, Europe. Then I married an Englishman and have lived in England for a long time. Our daughter (half English, half Hungarian) learnt Bangra dancing in English primary school, when she was about 8-9, and performed it on stage. Asian, Black and English children all danced together! I'll link a short video showing some Hungarian folk-dancing, I hope you will like it. All the best! kzread.info/dash/bejne/n62XtKWhlNLdpKQ.html&ab_channel=Damaszkusz

That's not tap dancing. That's Irish dancing in hard shoes. Also as an Irish person the music and the dancing are 50/50. Without the music the dance would not be what it is. Riverdance is not just the dancing, it's the traditional Irish music too.
