VOCES8: Cantique de Jean Racine by Gabriel Fauré

VOCES8 performs Gabriel Fauré's 'Cantique de Jean Racine' with the English Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Barnaby Smith. The performance was filmed at Cadogan Hall, London in 2021 during the height of the pandemic, and this orchestration by Taylor Scott Davis was created especially for the concert.
TEXT
Répands sur nous le feu de Ta grâce puissante;
Que tout l'enfer fuie au son de Ta voix;
Pour Te bénir maintenant rassemblé;
TRANSLATION
Word of the Highest, our only hope,
Eternal day of earth and the heavens,
We break the silence of the peaceful night;
Saviour Divine, cast your eyes upon us!
Pour on us the fire of your powerful grace,
That all hell may flee at the sound of your voice;
Banish the slumber of a weary soul,
That brings forgetfulness of your laws!
O Christ, look with favour upon your faithful people
Now gathered here to praise you;
Receive their hymns offered to your immortal glory;
May they go forth filled with your gifts.

    I have been waiting for this for so long. And it is even more beautiful than I expected. Voces8 surpasses itself again and again.

    I have chosen this to be sung at my funeral. It is one of the most beautiful pieces I have ever sung.

    How is it possible that a 19-year old in a stuck-up school creates such a beautiful piece? It has stood the test of time. All serious choirs in the world sing it. It remains my favorite piece to sing.

    Why am I only hearing this for the first ever time today, and I'm in my 70s. I LOVE it!

    Exquisite! I don't think most people know how difficult it was for us conductors and musicians to play during pandemic restrictions of 6' between individual players and stands. It's very hard to hear and achieve good intonation/rhythmic coordination. I conducted a Cenerentola in 2021, full orchestra in a huge outdoor amphitheater, which meant about 80' from left to right (most large modern theaters and prosceniums are 40' wide.) You really can't hear beyond 2 stands away. Bravi and thanks to Barnaby and the wonderful musicians and singers for inspiring all of us during the pandemic years. Voces8 was my musical lifeline when everything was cancelled.
