An Introduction to Systema Breathing

Спорт

I produced this video, which introduces Systema breathing, as part of an initiative aimed at improving staff wellbeing that Berkshire Healthcare NHS Trust ran.
In it I cover some simple methods & patterns that can be used to improve the quality of your breath.

Hi Zyriab, yes it has been a while since I posted. I closed my Systema club when COVID struck so haven't been sharing videos for a while. However, I am starting to make videos again now with an emphasis on breath & movement (hence the change of name for the channel). Hopefully, you still have your bell on & get to see those as I post them. Thanks.

what about a normal non-demanding activities, like while reading for example. is it more natural to inhale and exhale through nose? or do you think we should even then exhale through mouth?

Normal breathing is in & out through the nose bakermantop. These are basic exercises to help releases tension. You can of course do them in & out through the nose but exhaling through the mouth is a good way to clean the system.

Inhale through nose and exhale through mouth. Breath with the "stomach" (lower part of lungs actually), enough without causing tension in your body. When you exhale the rib cage should press down your lungs, you should not tense your diaphragm, chase air without resisting. There's a resistance at the mouth, you blow like on candles, for example. Always keep in mind it's about the "right tension", letting go of any parasite (or unnecessary) tensions. As for the mouth exhale, it's generally used when under stress and you need to exhale a lot of air (calming down, punch, recovery with explosive breathing, when working on tension and breath in general, etc) Otherwise you would exhale through the nose, naturally, when everything is cool :) Cheers and good training :) Edit: And don't forget posture ! 5:28

I think Zyriab has covered this very well Anantha. The only thing I would say is to be aware not to force the exhale. Allow tension to leave the body with the breath.

What if you suffer with a respiratory problem.

Conscious breathing is to help you with your day to day wellbeing. If you suffer from a respiratory problem such as Asthma, in mild cases create a breathing practice that suits you using these methods as a guide. Have patience, relax its okay to stop if things become too challenging. Otherwise stick to a routine and make it something you do everyday.

I would agree with jeremyraven3665, be consistent & find what suits you. Even with respiratory problems you still need to breath of course. It's case of be aware of how you breath & breathing as naturally & comfortably as you can.

Inhaling every 6 beats and exhaling every 6 beats is waaaay too fast. It's making me black out.

Reverend Dickie most people find 6 beats a good rhythm. If you find this is too short, then you can of course lengthen each phase of the breath.
