Samozřejmě. Příklad věty: "Ta jízda Audinou je jiný kafe než tou starou Škodovkou." For "apples and oranges" we use "jabka a hrušky" and the expression "sčítat jabka a hrušky" is especially used when somebody gets unreliable results from nonrelevant data.

Exactly - "jiný kafe" means something better. Like if you talk about something crap and you trying to compare it with something real good. So the better is "jiný kafe".

@@karelzidek5102 We use "plantat hrušky s jabkama" :-D - most of the time someone talks some nonsense about something ... "je to jiný kafe" could be easily translated to english, with respect to daily usage, like "Oh yes, that is much better (huge difference)" BUT it can be used in negative context as well, like "A new teacher, you will see, to je jiné kafe" - meaning the new teacher is really harsh or teaches completely different (not good or bad, just different) ... and we are getting back - to je jiný kafe means "it is something really different" like "sto a jedna" :-D

"to je jiný kafe" actually means, that its way better than the previous one.

@@DreamPrague I guess it’s something like “Now we’re talking!” Where you previously weren’t satisfied, now you are. Maybe when your new favorite pizzeria is a huge improvement from the old pathetic one where they had cold plates and spelling mistakes in the menu. Or when the new player replaces a weaklink and crushes it. Or you get a new smartphone after having an old, frustrating Nokia and it just blows your mind.

"To je jiné kafé" se používá v jiném významu. Není to čistě o tom, že je něco jiného, ale je to spíše vyjádření kladného ohodnocení v porovnání s předchozí horší situací/věcí (něco jako "to předchozí bylo nanic, ale tohle je fakt super"). Důležitý je ten prvek porovnání a spokojenosti se současnou variantou. Řekl bych, že to má blízko k "this is way better then previous one". Mimochodem, podobný význam má i české sousloví "To si dám líbit".

Máte pravdu, že nejčastěji se to používá v tom smyslu, že něco bylo špatný a teď je to dobré nebo o poznání lepší. Ale dá se to použit i tak, že je to prostě jiné a nemusí tam být zlepšení. Ale je to opravdu velice málo.

To jsem v životě neslyšel, to se v normální češtině nepoužívá, ale když jsem hledal, dočetl jsem se, že to je zřejmě kalk německého idiomu "Gabelfrühstück". Takže se to asi používá jen mezi germanofilními či austrofilními hogo fogo hipstry.

Mako suverénně nejlépe chápe podstatu věci. Je opravdu velice chytrá a vnímavá.😀 Pozdravujte ji.🌞❤️🌞

We don't say "bordel" about a person like - "Ona je bordel" - she is a mess. But you can say "Ona je bordelářka" - meaning that she makes a lot of mess - not cleaning her room, she's not organized etc. Or you say it about your pets - "Moje kočka je hrozný bordelář" - because cats spread out litter everywhere, knock off things etc. But you don't say it about someone's looks. She's a mess could be "vypadá hrozně" - when someone's having a bad day, the person is sick, no time to make yourself beautiful in the morning and therefore they look terrible.... or "bože, ta má dneska ránu" - oh god, she looks terrible today (bad choice of dress, makeup, bad haircut) - this saying might be mean in some situations, but you can say it to your friend when he's wearing a funny costume for example.

Bordel is harsher than "mess". It changes with context, but on average it matches the intensity of "garbage" when used negatively.

I always understood the phrase " She is a mess" on a mental health level, not physical looks level. Something like she has had a breakdown, she is a mess". I might be wrong though

I'd say 'mess' should be the primary translation for 'bordel'. It's used often, especially with kids and we don't usually picture a brothel :D

@@tomasculek3673 Cesi samozrejme chapou bordel jako budovu s typicky cervenou lucernickou, ale hodne z toho zavisi na kontextu, coz tem slovum ve videu chybi. Bordel navic vubec neoznacuje jen fyzickej neporadek, bordel muze mit nekdo v hlave, za bordel se da oznacit fungovani spousty firem atd.

Bordel - yeah, literally means brothel. It can be a physical mess (“Kids, I want you to clean up that ‘bordel’ in your room right now!”), an organizational mess or chaos in general (“There is a complete ‘bordel’ in the government.”) or any kind of hype (classic example - a DJ at a party shouting at the crowd:”udělejte bordel!” meaning “make some noise!”)

to je ale spatny preklad spravne to je cunning as a fox v cestine take nerikame namazany/promazany jako liska a vnimame rozdil mezi tim mazany zde znamena chytry, ostatne "mazaný" ve vete nemuze mit jiny vyznam, vždz by tam musela být předložka aby to dávalo smysl, protože mazaný šroub je kravina :D a mazání má jiný význam.

Hi Jen, a great vlog! "Now you are talking" is probably 'jiny kafe.' Or "that's the ticket!" also works. Typically it means a vast improvement from the past. "Vetrelec" means an intruder, so 'vetrit se' is to get somewhere you don't belong. In that sense, your friends' guesses were incorrect, but I like the way they think!

“To je jiné kafe” is used as a reaction to situation improvement and you usually express it with excitement....English version would be something like “Now we’re talking...!”, or “That’s what I’m talking about...”

Zrovna jsme se doma bavili o tom, jak by cizinec pochopil: “Měl velký voči.” 😀

Tam jde hlavně o tu slovní hříčku dvou zvukově podobných slov znamenajících něco naprosto jiného, podobně jako u hodinek a holínek. Na podobné bázi je založen i ten text, že "Člověk by neměl používat cizí termity, když je nezná suterénně nebo není v dobré konvici, protože je zde veliké rizoto, že to skončí fiatem. Každý se tváří jako suvenýr, ale vrátí se mu to jako buzerant."

Hi there (again), I have a little correction for You. no.4 - "Snídaně na vidličku" - It means, when You wake up later and it´s too late for breakfast and too soon for lunch. So You take something to eat larger than breakfast, but smaller than lunch. Something like scrambled eggs, or something similar when fork is needed. no.3 - "To je jiný kafe" - It means that something is different in the positive sense of the word. It could be taken as: "It´s a higher level". So I have another idiom for You: "Přejdi k jádru pudla..."(CZ), "Go to the core of a poodle..." (EN)

You dont need to wake up late for "Snídani na vidličku". Přesně to znamená co jsi psal po tom, vejce,fazole,slanina atd... , prostě cokoliv co je "na vidličku", takovej rohlík s marmoškou na vidličku není ;).

There's actually one more thing that may be interesting - not sure if that's common in other languages. Czechs like to use short citations of popular czech movies as idioms. E.g. in utter disgust you can say "Velebnosti, du blejt!" (reference to Slunce, seno, erotika). Or if someone's (unsuccessfully) looking for something and you want to banter him/her you can say "Nasli moji radcove, nasli?" (reference to Pysna princezna). Or if someone's too ambitious but not skillful you call him "Hujer" who was a hyperbolized character of such 'qualities' in "Marecku, podejte mi pero!" movie which also produced the legendary sentence "Jsem si dovolil... par svesticek... ze sve zahradky..." which is also used a lot (giving a present, jokingly saying something like - now I expect some favor). There are many such examples. That's of course only used between native speakers as you usually need to know the context of the sentence in the movie.

To je jiny kafe, means more like, if you taste, or just experience something you might not like very much, and then there a change to something you do like! For me it would be for example bitting a coffee flavored chocolate, showing my dislike to others (might not even say anything) and someone would offer a bar of kinder chocolate... I would shine and smile and say "jee Jen dekuju, to je jiny kafe..." And i would chew and shine and smile... :)

Cool video, thanks! A few comments, or rather my opinion on a few things I believe you did not get exactly right. I may not be right but that's the way I understand them: "to je jiný kafe" usually means "this new thing is extraordinary compared to the previous thing(s)". Such as if you use normal car for years and then get to ride a Ferrari. With "extraordinary" in any direction - better, worse, different, confusing, etc. "snídaně na vidličku" means fresh cooked breakfast but usually if it means something special. If you get scrambled eggs for breakfast in a hotel, you may call it "snídaně na vidličku" and nobody would object but usually that's just called breakfast. But when your husband prepares cooked breakfast for you as a surprise, perhaps even serves it to your bed, then you will describe it to your friends as "udělal mi snídani na vidličku" in a sense that you got special treatment for breakfast that day. "padají trakaře" means any kind of very unpleasant weather - rain, wind, snow, hailstorm, any combination of these. Historically, "trakaře" was a word for large snowflakes (made of multiple snowflakes stuck together) and was only used for snowing but nobody uses it that way today. Also, "půjdu tam i kdyby trakaře padaly" means "I will go there no matter what" and then it refers to any kind of obstruction that may come in your way, not just weather. "je to bordel" means "state way below my standard", i.e. both physical and metaphorical. If you visit badly organized company, you may describe it "mají tam bordel" even if the place is perfectly clean, just because their organization is bad (and you had very unpleasant experience with it).

"To je bordel" could be used also for non-physical mess, it could be used for example when kids playing loud, basically in unpleasant and disorganised situations or places, no to the people directly. Also i thing it was quite unfortunate, to try translate "vetřít" as "to rub", it is completely different meaning in this time. "Vetřít" could have this meaning like "vetřít mast" - "to rub ointment", but with "se" meaning is more like "to intrude". Of course I understand, that wouldn't be to much funny.

"To je bordel" we use to express we watch a mess. Which is not just messy room but also disorder like corruption in politics or non functional services.

"To je jiné kafe" means "it is whole new level" "Snídaně na vidličku" is something like english breakfast, or brunch. Some food you eat from plate with a fork. It is not an idiom :) "Je tu bordel" doesnt exatly means just brothel :) bordel means a mess (and also brothel). You can not say "bordel" about a person.

Thank you for posting this. The lady ive been chatting with over there has not been very helpful with the idioms or "sayings" like I have. Ive shared some of ours from here in the states like "thick as a brick " "dumb as a bag of hammers" " built like a brick shit house" "pulling hens teeth" "playing to beat the band" "cattywhompus" stuff like that. Ive learned more from you, areapas for dinner and honest guide than I have from her. I stumped her last time I chatted by telling her that the English she learned is the "Btitish" English. I told her that you were the one that put that information in a video

Jen, if your friend Alle in Chicago is interested in learning more Czech, there is a Czech school in Cicero (suburb next to Chicago) called the T. G. Masaryk School that offers classes and hosts cultural events (obviously not in person right now). I take classes there and I love it. Great video!

Hi Jen, the Old Quibbler at your service! This time it was really funny - but thought provoking too! ;) So just briefly: "Jiné kafe" - has two meanings: "It was far tougher then expected", or "It is something totally different form what I have thought it would be" - depends on context. It can also express contentment. "Snídaně na vidličku" - I would not call it an idiom - it is rather idiomatic name for food type, but you are right - it is hot breakfest. Hot enough for not to touch it by bare hands. "Vetřít se někam" - does not neccesarily mean to ruin party, but rather just to sneek in somewhere uninvited (anywhere - not only party). But girls made pretty funny guesses - i realy liked it! :D "Dámská jízda in 22 tram" would be really something I would prefer to watch from safe distance...! :D "Pít jako duha" - they say that in a past people thought that rainbow draws water from water sources like lakes or ponds - but theory about drinking all colours of alcohol sounds far more amusing to me! :D "Padají trakaře" - has one even more expressive version: "Venku padají ho*na s háčkama." ("Outside rain sh*ts with hooks!")... My apology for nasty vocabulary...! ;) "Je to bordel" - it means: "It is a mess." - literally as physical disorder in house, warehouse, papers, system etc. - but also in metaphysical way like: "Má bordel v hlavě." ("His mind is real mess."). But it also means: "It is a ruckus!" - for noisy places like factories or inside of loud machines like tanks or big trucks. It never relates to person - only to place or condition of certain place (Mind is also place for a mess...) - but if you want to say that someone is messy you call him/her "bordelář/-ka". Say hi for me to poor Honza...! :D "Chodit kolem horké kaše." - just as you say: "Beat around the bush", but Czech idiom refers to something you avoid for some time 'cos it is too hot yet (even explosive) and you want to wait some time for the right moment - literally you wait till it cools down enough to touch it. ;) "Poslední kapka" - is abbreviation of saying: "Poslední kapka, která kápne do džbánu až přeteče." ("Just last drop that falls into a jug to overflow.") - same like the one with camel - just less violent. ;) I hope it helps a little bit - and keep up the good work! I have not laughed so much for a long time! Thx so much for this video :D Though I have never heard of "Snídaně na vidličku" and also when someone say "Padají trakaře" they usually refer to a huge snow flakes (but that might differ in different parts of the country)

"To je jiný kafe" znamená trochu něco jiného. Znamená to, že něco je lepší, větší, krásnější prostě kvalitativně lepší, než to, co bylo předtím.

Hodinky a holinky (oboji se natahuji)

I think that posledni kapka is a call back to us saying "pohár trpelivosti pretekl" (the cup of [one's] patience has spilled over). The same way it is the ls straw that breaks the camel's back, it is the last drop that overfills the cup of patience and it spills. Hence the proverbial last drop.

Je zvláštní, že slečna, jejíž předci měli české kořeny, chápala a vyslovovala nejhůře. :D Ale o to víc je afektovaná... Zato slečna Mako je úžasná a velmi sympatická. Nevím, jak dlouho žije v Praze, ale vážně skvěle vyslovuje.
