Americans are Falling in Love with Valencia and Leaving Lisbon Behind

📖 Ultimate Guide to Valencia: payhip.com/b/DKdBS
In the past year, the number of Americans relocating to Portugal has risen by 45%. Although Lisbon is often perceived as the top destination for American expats, this trend may be due to excessive hype. Alternatively, the city that offers similar advantages to Lisbon, is Valencia, and it may be a better option. Valencia is a warmer, more economical city that lacks the steep hills that Lisbon is known for. Furthermore, Valencia was ranked the best city for expats in 2022. In todays video I go over the advantages and disadvantages for both cities. Let me know in the comments if you lived in Lisbon or Valencia.

Imagine that thousands move anyways because Valencia is a warm, affordable beach city. There are hundreds of KZread vloggers talking about Valencia. Cities all grow, it’s inevitable. I think a better use of time would be to accept that and just enjoy your life.

@@polymath9965 So, what do you suggest, that Valencians should sit quietly and watch how their beautiful hometown is becoming an unbearable place to live in the future? Because of those hundreds of KZread vloggers talking about Valencia without any long-term thinking, sawing off the branch they are sitting on. But wait, I know what all those KZread vloggers are going to do next: they will look for another “Hidden Gem” to escape (leaving behind damage). Do you know how many young Spanish people have been forced to leave their hometown Valencia and move abroad during the last years? Because they could not afford to pay rent in Valencia with their salaries anymore. But I know, many of them! So, it seems like all these young Valencians don’t deserve to enjoy their life in their home city? Have you ever thought, why the state of our planet and nature is so horrible? Because most people think like this: “Let's enjoy our life, let's enjoy the moment! What we leave behind us… who cares?” Pretty selfish!

Antoanetta has only 9k subs and I don’t think this video is responsible for pushing out the poor locals. Have you ever considered that the daylight robbery called inflation is responsible for the rising prices everywhere? @@polymath9965 I like a lot of Antoanetta's videos. But there is big difference between advertising of the city, inviting people to come to visit this place and convincing another people to move and live in this city. In the first case, that is mostly very good and positive for the city. In the second case, that can negatively interfere with the life of the locals. We people should take responsibility for what we are doing and saying. Because we influence each other and unfortunately, interfere in the lives of others. You know what's funny, I’m not even from Valencia, but I know Valencia, I like Valencia very much, I got to know many people from Valencia and I feel for them and care about them.

@@irenen.6846 She appreciates you watching but I just don’t see how she can make videos about her satisfaction with Valencia and not influence people to think, “maybe I would live better there as well?.” This is the thesis of her channel and changes you are asking for are made by shutting the whole thing down. There are way too many appreciative subscribers to do that. The next thing I would ask you to consider, the algorithm of KZread… titles are very important for visibility. Every creator has to serve that algorithm if they want to continue existing. This channel might not be as financially successful as you think. Roughly, every video averages her about $20-50 lifetime. That’s essentially working for free. Things are always more complicated than we want them to be.. it’s a tough competitive business.

Totally agree with this. Very accurate. I used to live in Lisbon for 2 years and prefer Valencia as well. Just to add: 1) Lisbon public transport is worse than VLC 2) There are barely any local Portuguese living in central Lisbon as they can not afford it anymore, particularly in the nice areas like Principe Real, Bairro Alto but mostly Americans now. 3) I love the Portuguese people, but I find them too depressed and gloomy compared to Spaniards. 4) The construction quality of the "newly" renovated apartments and housing is very bad. Housing has no insulation, mold problems in winter, expensive electricity, etc. But, I find Portuguese cuisine more delicious than Spanish :)

My wife & I are planning to retire to Portugal within the year (not Lisbon or Porto, but one of the smaller cities). We are both USA citizens; she is also a dual citizen of Peru. We love both Spain & Portugal and were first looking to retire in Spain since wife already speaks fluent Spanish. However, we wish to obtain EU citizens without relinquishing our USA citizenship. Portugal allows dual citizenship with USA, and Spain does not. And it takes 10 years as a resident of Spain to become eligible for citizenship versus 5 years in Portugal. And there's the NHR tax benefit in Portugal. So Portugal it is for us. Thanks for the video!

Totally agree and also, although Spain still has the golden visa, the world-wide prosperity tax is really killing it for us. Paying around 3% every year on ALL of your assets including the real estate, stock portfolio, etc everywhere (in Spain, USA and everywhere else) is just crazy. I feel like Spain is great for lower-middle class folks going for non-lucrative or digital nomad visas but not someone with more assets. I'm not ready by any stretch of imagination, and I can't be spending 10s of thousands of dollars every year just in that tax alone! And then there is a bunch of other taxes and fees, so it just adds up. I'll go for a visit whenever I feel like it and have fun without having to jump through the hoops.

Very biased of course ;). My experience with Valencia is a bit different but this maybe be cause I am European and lived in many other cities. Valencia for me was very crowded with very intense urbanization. Low quality of living in the downtown areas due to noise, bars, traffic and crowds of people. It is nice for a touristic visit but not for long term life. Access to the beach in fact is not so good as there is a big commercial harbor right in the middle of the city's shore. Prices are also quite high now comparing to what the city can offer. Most of the apartments would not have any type of terrace and with interior patios bedrooms. There is small neighborhood by the beach with quite nice area but obviously very reduced supply of housing.

Lisbon has the higher concentration of about 2,000 but many Americans live in the smaller towns [ cheaper cost living ] . The advantage of Portugal for retired Americans is a 10% tax [ nhr tax ] [ 20% others ] . Spain has an aggressive / complicated tax system & sales tax. There is the main govt + the different regions with their own tax system. You have to work out the numbers. Portugal language is different from Spain. In Portugal they will understand Spanish & English in the big cities. in smaller towns - Portuguese & Spanish.

A strong passion for languages was born in me but I'm not good at it, I don't know if my fatigue is connected to my being sensitive, introverted and blocked or not because I noticed that most people can study languages easily , I don't know if they were all born with the innate predisposition and I together with the minority are the only losers who don't have it and if you need to have a talent not to struggle with languages

Valencia better than lisbon.!?!?!?... Ah, ah, for you. Not for me, and i know both very well. Lisbon i born and live for long time. Valencia, i have lived there for 5yrs. Lisbon is not only hills, i think you don't know all lisbon very well, i guess you only know the centre city. But, anyway Valencia is good, but lisbon have much more to offer.

I've been watching you for sometime now. Since you used to live in LA, you know there are lots of Asians in LA, right? I've heard that racism, more out of ignorance than spite, is common there against Asians. Watching your videos, I have not seen any Asians there. How are Asians there treated if you've observed this.

@@dianejake8525 That's good to know. I'm in the States and I'd say, there's both implicit and explicit racism toward Asians that have escalated because of the pandemic -- and every Asian is thought of as Chinese. I'm Filipino btw. Do you know any Asian transplant vlogger in Spain? Haven't found one yet.

Unfortunately you make your videos to get money and a wider audience and sometimes telling people untrue facts. I don't want Valencia full of people everywhere pretending that it is the paradise. Can't you make videos with other focuses? After few months watching your videos is always the same time after time. Very booring I am afraid.

Completely agree. Just to get views on her channel. What makes me sad is the wrong information she passes on to her followers. Valencia is the best city in the world, in the galaxy, or even in the universe... Things like, a garbage collector in Spain gets €1900, with everything free. Gasoline is much cheaper in Spain than in the United States. Spain is richer than America, when news came out today that Spain is the country in Europe with the highest increase in extreme poverty with 21% against 11% in the US. Health is free for everyone, but people are taxed almost to death, only free for those who don't work. Valencia is not underrated, is just not as good as she wants to make it out to be, it's completely ridiculous to compare Valencia to any major city in the US. Today it was the turn to say that it is better than Lisbon, as it was the turn of London, Barcelona and many others. And in the end, he lives in Valencia with a company that has an address at 728 S. Hill Street, Los Angeles, which charges in American dollars. Makes you think... I don't mean to say that Valencia is bad, or that I have anything against it.

Valencia has a better weather, better beach, it's cheaper than Lisbon to rent or to buy real estate. However, there's a big problem here: it stinks! Yes, literally: it stinks everywhere. Huge problem with sewage... Couldn't live here.
