American Reacts to Top 10 Football Fans In the World

Hello! I'm an American on a quest to learn more about history, geography and the universe in general. In this video I take a first look at football (soccer) fans around the world, and I'm shocked at some of them - particularly Greece and Argentina setting the stadium on fire. No way this is legal! This was not fire in the stands but thousands of hand held flares. They are illegal, but organized fans smuggle them inside the stadiums. You were saying about the Fire Marshal, he wouldn't dare shut anything down because there would be a full scale riot. In the US people go to see the games, in Europe and Latin America people go to participate in the games. Players of the home teams consider their fans as the "extra player on the field".

Those fireworks would be more or less everywhere in the stadiums in Europe. It's not allowed in most places and the teams have to pay a lot if it happens in their stadium. It still happens from time to time. I wouldn't consider this as top fans who do that. By the way, don't watch videos about new years eve in Germany if you are shocked by stupid use of fireworks by drunken people. kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z5Zhk9Nvc6ifm9Y.html Germans are very serious in doing things. "You'll Never Walk Alone" is from the Rogers and Hammerstein Musical "Carousel". Gerry and the pacemakers were a 60's Merseybeat group who did a cover, and the song became adopted by Liverpool FC. I think this became further imbedded in the club after the Hillsborough disaster, as a memorial for the 96 who died. Borussia Dortmund and Celtic as well as lots of other clubs also adopted the song. I'm not a Liverpool fan, but I did visit Anfield as a kid. Seeing the kop stand, sing and hold their scarfs, made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. It's almost like a religious experience.

I'm biased, but having stood on the Kop since I was 8 in 1978, then sat in various parts of the ground, I can testify, it is a religious experience. sadly, the lack of local fans (not just with LFC) in the Premier League, has reduced the impact somewhat of match day atmosphere.

I find it interesting watching American reactions to some football celebrations. You ask if they've cleared people out of the way for the fireworks, as though there are officials involved in the 'pyrotechnics'. There are no officials behind this, no risk assessments, etc. it's just fans bringing their own flares and fireworks to the game. It always makes me sad to see American sports stadiums have to put on bands, play music on speakers and get cheerleaders to cajole supporters into doing anything. In most European countries the fans make their own entertainment and the officials just stand watching in despair hoping they don't cause too much damage.
That were some very tame vids. Check out some of these clubs in the game, it is insane
#9 was "Sailing" by Rod Stewart, which itself was a cover of a Sutherland Brothers written song. The Sutherland Brothers began their career in 1968 as A New Generation, having some success with the single "Smokie Blues Away" (which used a melody based on the second movement of Dvořák's New World Symphony), backed with "She's a Soldier Boy" on Spark. Subsequently with the Sutherland Brothers Band (featuring bassist Kim Ludman[4] and drummer Neil Hopwood), they won a new recording contract with Island Records and put out an album in 1972. Their first single as the Sutherland Brothers Band was under this contract, and was a minor hit, "The Pie", in January 1972. Their follow-up single was "Sailing", which had much radio play but was commercially unsuccessful (it was later covered by Rod Stewart).[3]

"How is that safe?" It's just not... The fire you see comes most likely from flares that fans smuggled into the stadium. So there was no fire marshall involved in the whole thing. It is not allowed but there is nothing anyone can do once it is started. However, the football clubs get punished by the corresponding football organisation if that happens (fines or they are forced to play some games without fans)

The tune of "You'll never Walk Alone" has always traditionally been associated with Liverpool FC - though it's been adopted by others, of course. The Liverpool song, "You'll Never Walk Alone" is from the Rogers & Hammerstein Broadway musical, Carousel. Liverpool fans have been singing this one for decades and its a spine-tingling experience to hear 50,000 voices singing it at Anfield (Liverpool's stadium). In the 1960s, Liverpool fans also used to sing all the hit songs by The Beatles and other bands of the Mersey Beat. Supporters of Glasgow Celtic and Borussia Dortmund also sing "You'll Never Walk Alone", ironically to the same Gerry Marsden soundtrack. By the way, that fire festival you talk about in the video may be the Burning of the Clavie in Burghead, a small town near Elgin in the northeast of Scotland. The Clavie is a burning barrel of tar which is carried shoulder-high through the streets of Burghead by a selected man called the King of the Clavie. Only a native of Burghead can be the King. It's a Scottish New Year celebration unique to Burghead which dates back to Pagan times before the Julian calendar was reformed. It actually takes place on the 11th January to coincide with the old Scottish New Year. There are other similar Pagan New Year celebrations which occur in some Scottish country towns where selected members of the town parade through the streets ahead of the procession, swinging flaming bales of sticks and straw called a flambeau around their head. Judging by your reaction to the flares at the football grounds, it would probably freak you out, but it is relatively safe. Their purpose is to ward off evil spirits and to prepare for a fruitful year ahead.

I'm afraid Banter requires Wit, Intelligence, Humour, Knowledge and an ability to be quick-witted and speak cogently, articulately, mellifluously with a degree of charm, so this lifelong MILLWALL fan from the right side of the River will move swiftly on and commiserate with you for your disappointing season ahead as you no longer have any real Home advantage since that wonderful Boleyn Stadium was burnt to the ground and this season home fans to places like United, Leeds and Everton will return so your away form will plummet. Could be a relegation battle ahead like the good old days :) Let's hope so :)

You've overstepped the mark, mon ami .By all means, insult me, my family, my team but, PLEASE. I beseech you, do not incorrectly spell "nonentity". There is absolutely no need for a hyphen. :( SoGal could review "Let 'em Come" really referring to The OLD DEN where we broke the league record with 59 Home games unbeaten or "No-one Likes Us" which we originated in 1987 or "Maybe It's Because I Am A SOUTH EAST Londoner".....Whaddya reckon, mi amigo ? :)

No almost about it it is sung at every Celtic home game just before kick_ off
Quote from Joham Cruyff, indisputwdly one of the greatest footballers of all time, and revered former manager of Barcelona: There's not one club in Europe with an anthem like "You'll Never Walk Alone." There's not one club in the world so united with the fans. I sat there watching the Liverpool fans and they sent shivers down my spine. A mass of 40,000 people became one force behind their team

Several clubs around the world have adopted You'll Never Walk Alone. It was written for a musical, but was a pop song in the 60s by Gerry and the Pacemakers and adopted by Liverpool.
my Club (Sport Lisboa e Benfica) has an eagle as its symbol. During the club anthem in our home stadium, an eagle flies in the stadium, then goes to land on the club symbol at the center of the field.
You should watch: Ultras our way of life
you can´t have fireworks in a stadium with people next to it. every south american stadium...........say what?
As someone else has said "You'll Never Walk Alone" is from the Rogers and Hammerstein musical "Carousel" but in Liverpool local band "Gerry and the Pacemakers" released a version in 1963 and it went to No.1 in the UK. They were actually the first UK band to have three consecutive No.1 hits with their three first singles and held that record for many decades. This track was the third of those hits. As a consequence back in 1963 Liverpool fans adopted the song and Gerry has sung the song at Anfield a number of times too. Other clubs also adopted the song like Borussia Dortmund in Germany and also Celtic in Scotland. Celtic is pronounced "Seltic". I know you are 100% right about the fire effects but your face was classic when we got to this bit. We forgot all about the songs when the sparks started to fly. Just to clarify I think what you saw in those last two games was firstly flares, which is why the effect was static and also smoke bombs are used as well which might give the impression that things are on fire. Red smoke bombs. In Argentina however, they do appear to be using fireworks too. The flares are banned in the UK but it still does happen sometimes but it is against the law. I think you see more of this in Eastern Europe and the Baltics but it does happen in the Italian, German and English leagues sometimes.

It is not only banned in the UK but everywhere. I think flares are great and part of football culture
You were not annoying. I found it quite funny and entertaining watching you freak out over the use of flares and fireworks. 😂

Flares aren’t harmful they’re normal things people sneak into every big football event
That`s a nice size cup you`ve got there it gives the impression of nigh on a pinta
You worrying about the fire brings me to the tragedy of Bradford V Lincoln in 1985. I was crying seeing those people on fire
You’ll never walk alone from Carousel are the anthems of Liverpool and Dortmund in fact the song title is included in Liverpool F C’s wrought iron stadium gates.

Hey SoGal, you need to know that those "Pyro-Blinker-and smoke stuff" is illegal in europe as well. Always when those things happens the clubs get heavy fines (german POV). Everyone is scanned before going into stadium. So the fans break into the stadium a few days before the game to hide the pyrotechnics. 🙋🏼♂️
"You'll never walk alone" definitely started with Liverpool but nowadays a lot of other clubs have it as a song before the match as well. I'm from Germany and here at least 2 or 3 clubs in the Bundesliga (first Division) sing it. I think it's just a great song that has an even greater message especially within Football. So I guess the german clubs didn't really steal it but embraced it just like Liverpool to present this message that noone in the stadium has to ever walk alone. This bonding really works well with Football I think and I'm glad multiple clubs use it

Liverpool, said to be the ones who started the singing culture among football fans. I don't know if that's true, but here is a video from 1964, where Panorama (BBC) visited Liverpool to take a look at their singing crowds: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oXyYtcOJpJu4qaQ.html

The 1959 FA Cup final was the first time a song from popular culture was (knowingly) sung at a football match. Forest fans singing the theme tune of The Adventures of Robin Hood (Robin Hood, Robin Hood, riding through the glen, etc)
"that's a no no" ^^ the never walk alone song is sang by many fans but i think it's originally liverpool's
3:40 the melody sounds to be "I'm sailing".

hi i'm from rosario.. argentina and a rosario central's fan.. proud to be the number 1 there :) to give you some context that's the welcome to the team in the day of the derby of the city.. rosario central vs newell's old boys (club where messi started to play).. the rivalry here is something that a lot of people can't understand.. the air gets thicker and thicker since one week before the game.. and to answer your question.. yes the fireworks and flares are dangerous.. they make some space between the fireworks and the people but not enough at all.. in argentina we already had a big tragedy due to flares inside a night club but it's part of our culture i guess.. even yet i guess the use of flares and fireworks is decreasing
The things that are on fire are flares. Great video!
